Description
"Hurry, we're going to miss it!” The young boy shouted excitedly while gesturing to his father who was behind the wheel.“Relax son, we'll catch it in time!" The man replied reassuringly.
The small pickup truck they were in made its way down the quiet empty road by the meadows before coming to a stop at a railroad crossing. As the safety barrier came down, the flashing caution lights and unmistakable chime for an oncoming train could be heard. The youngster lowered down the window of his front seat and peered as the train sounded its horn signaling its arrival. He gazed in absolute awe as the huge military locomotive passed them; hauling a string of armored freight cars and carriages of varying sizes. The jet black diesel engine was unlike anything he had ever seen. Its sharp angular points and riveted armor plates almost made it look more like some kind of stealth fighter. Most notable were the large guns and rocket launchers mounted all over the engine and its numerous train cars.
"Where are they from dad? The army?"
"I don't know son." The boy's father scratched his chin in cluelessness as the UNITE sigil emblazoned on the locomotive's side passed them.
As the carriage that Joshua was in passed the crossroad junction, he saw the young boy waving at him from his father's pickup truck. From his seat by the window, he instinctively smiled and waved back at them before resuming his report. Having recently completed an operation in Antarctica, Joshua and Nicolia were on a rail convoy bound for the Canada–United States border. The locomotive they were on continued to trundle through the plains before making its way towards the highlands; carefully snaking its way across the contours of the rocky pass while moving at a relative speed. If the journey goes according to plan, the duo would be back in Chicago before nightfall with their prize ready to be delivered. In the meantime, the two UNITE operatives were alone in their private dining car enjoying the few hours of peace and quiet they had.
Is that what the girls are wearing these days? Nicolia pondered to herself while scrutinizing a picture from a fashion magazine. The image depicted a model wearing an incredibly revealing low-cut dress. She would kill to have something like that in her wardrobe, but at the same time Nicolia knew the only way her figure would complement such a dress is if she could keep her hair long. Military life unfortunately meant that there was no way she could have it out for extended periods of time.
Nicolia sighed and flipped the page which showed another model in a black tube top. She smiled to herself, recalling that she had a pair of light blue jeans that could potentially compliment it.
Hmm, this one might not be so bad. Maybe I can get a discount at-
"Is Snowball's Chance good name?" A voice suddenly spoke, interrupting her train of thought. Seated at a table opposite of her was Joshua taping away at his portable tablet.
Nicolia frowned and peered at the agent who was still glued to his screen. “What the heck are you even on about?..."
“Snowballs Chance. Get it? It's like a play on the phrase "snowball's chance in hell" which means no possibility of sucee-"
“Yes I know what that means!” Nicolia interrupted, slightly annoyed. "I'm asking what you are talking about?!"
"Oh, I need an operation name to register into the database.”
"What. Didn't you already come up with a name the day before?"
"I did. Apparently someone logged that name into the data hub before I could!" Joshua replied while gesturing to the screen in annoyance.
"Not my fault you held off doing the report until now." Responded Nicolia nonchalantly as she resumed her magazine.
"Well either way I need a new operation name, so hit me with you got.”
"For crying out loud, I'm not exactly in a creative mood right now.” She scowled.
“Give me a name, or you and I are going to be a part of Operation: Happy Trails.”
“Urgh, fine. Operation... Bering Strait, maybe?"
Joshua started mashing the screen as fast as he could, ending with an expression of glee.
"Yes! Operation: Bering Strait, accepted! I omitted the 'maybe' because I thought it was unnecessary.”
Nicolia pinched the bridge of her nose with an exasperated look. Despite the two of them having a long working history together in UNITE, times like these made her wonder if she should rethink her career options.
As the agent continued his report, the events of the previous day came to his mind. The only thing Joshua could think of was Kai, the little mermaid who saved his life. The thought of the poor girl being on the receiving end of Nicolia's wrath was rather distressing. But more importantly, a part of him felt like he had met Kai before. He briefly remembered his encounter with Artesia from when he was a child.
No, that was not it. He thought to himself. She was a clearly a completely different mermaid. However Joshua knew he had definitely seen her before somewhere. Somewhere... else.
“What do you think Lab 2 is going to do with Abyss-1?" He asked Nicolia while taking a pause from his report.
"Not sure, but knowing Molly, she is going to have one heck of a field day with that critter."
"I don't know, it's kind of a shame to let Lab 2 take it apart. For all the trouble it caused us, Abyss-1 is still a rather unique specimen."
"Unique? That abomination nearly killed you!” Nicolia snorted.
“Nearly, if it weren't for her.” Joshua frowned.
"What, you still mad at me for chasing away your precious mermaid?" The Enforcer mocked. "She's a damn EX-A! A freak of nature. They're all the same."
"You're a freak." Joshua muttered.
"What was that?" Nicolia glared.
"Nothing." Joshua replied as he continued typing, ignoring her completely
“Regardless of your opinion, what they do to that damn thing is out of my hands."
"Maybe we can persuade the Director to keep it as at test subject? I mean, it is the first of its kind that we've discovered. We might just learn more from it being alive than dead."
“And where do you suggest we even keep it? At your place?"
“Ha, funny, Nicole. I didn't know you had a sense of humor."
“That was rhetorical.” glanced Nicolia from the corner of her eye.
"Well, there is that once section of Lab 2 that we could use for-"
Before Joshua could finish his sentence, the armored panels lining the windows shutters slammed down, engulfing the carriage in darkness momentarily before the emergency lights saturated the room in a red hue. The train's intercom hummed to life as a female voice began announcing.
LOCKDOWN PROTOCOL ACTIVATED. LOCKDOWN PROTOCOL ACTIVATED. Ḷ̴̂̈́Ó̵̧̠͛C̸̛̳͌K̷̩̈D̷̻͠Ơ̶̱̐̂W̸̥̱͑̾̏Ṉ̶̗̀̍ ̷̻̱̈́͊P̷͐̀ͅR̵͔͇͉͋͐Ŏ̴͕T̵̤̎̓ͅǪ̵̬̾C̶͉͈̐̍͜Ơ̴̤̤̜̄L̶̛̘͇͎͊̈ ̸̬̖̌Å̵̤͇̈́C̴̦͔̉T̸̰̘̓Î̸͙Ṿ̵̄Á̸̢̻̤T̷̫̍E̴͔̻̅D̷͖͇̮͝.̸̛̺̘̬͗̚
The voice began to distort horrendously before going silent. In its place the most annoying song in the world started playing. Joshua fumbled with his tablet in an attempt to communicate with the rest of the locomotive but was met with a loud burst of static. Likewise, Nicolia could barely reach out to the other soldiers stationed across the train.
"What the?... I can't seem to reach anyone!” said Joshua as he smacked his tablet to ensure that it was working.
"Neither. I think our signal is being jammed.”
“Localized jamming. That can only mean one thing - we're under attacked.”
Nicolia was shocked by that statement. Aside from the music being played, it sure was awfully quiet for a train under siege. No explosion, no gunfire, nothing. Standard protocol for such an attack would be to halt the train and set all gun carriages into assault mode. Lockdown mode on the other hand was only reserved for protecting certain train cars from being boarded. Despite the fact that the entire convoy was in lockdown mode, they were still on the move.
As the tune continued perpetually, a loud thump suddenly rocked the entire convoy. It felt almost like a large object just landed on their train. There was no doubt in their mind now that something was going down.
"Well I'm certainly not going to sit around and wait for things to happen. We need to a get a move on. Now."
“I'd like to but, I don't think we're going to get out of here anytime soon.” Joshua said as he attempted to pry open the steel shutter over the windows to no avail. On the other side, Nicolia placed her hand on the wall as she analyzed its material composition.
“There is a way, but it's not going to be pretty.”
"Well, do it then! I'll go crazy if I have to listen to that damn song over!"
“For once we can agree on something." Nicolia replied as she took out a fire charge from her waist pouch. She clenched the small palm-sized canister with her left hand until it shattered; a flurry of bright orange embers danced through the air around her gauntlet before being absorbed into the small translucent white gem at its base. As the flames dissipated, the gem started to change to a bright amber color signifying it was at full power.
"Might want to stand back” she warned while raising her hand at the wall of the carriage. Joshua immediately ducked for cover behind one of the large tables before a giant ball of fire started to grow in her hand. An explosion shook the car as she unleashed the inferno from her palm. The blast generated a large hole which immediately expelled a majority of the furniture inside it. Daylight flooded through the opening as the cold mountain breeze cleared the dust from their view. Despite not knowing what threat awaits them, they knew they were the only ones who could stop it. Joshua flattened his tablet back into its compact form and stored it in his coat while Nicolia clipped her long sword to her waist.
The duo exited the carriage and scaled its side to the top where they were greeted by a sight. In the air a few train cars down the line was a massive UNTC-12 Pegasus aerial hauler; its speed matching perfectly with the convoy. What made it different from a contemporary Pegasus were the heavily modified engines, and garish pink on black paint job. The aircraft's enormous claw winch was clamped onto an equally large grey container with several cables tethered between it. At that point Joshua instantly knew what was going on.
"We better get a move on! Whoever these people are, they're trying to steal Abyss-1!" He shouted.
"Not on my watch!” Nicolia snarled. After all the trouble they took to capture that monster in Antartica, there was no way she was going to let them have it without a fight.
“Who do you think they are? Mercenaries? The Frontier?" Joshua asked.
"Who cares? They are equally dead when I get my hands on them!” Nicolia scowled as the convoy continued on its path, unaware of the events that was unfolding.
The duo continued to leap from roof to roof, carriage to carriage as the steels spikes on the soles of their boots gripped onto the roof of the train cars. One wrong move could send them plummeting into the steep cliffs below. As they were getting closer, Joshua sensed something was amiss. Not a single one of their attackers could be seen. No gun shots. Nothing.
"Strange, you would think they would have sent out armed guards by now. Unless these people are criminally unpre-"
"Hold it!” Nicolia interrupted while raising her hand. “You hear that?"
Joshua looked around. Aside from the thundering of the wheels against the railway tracks, and the distant roar of the aircraft's engines, there was a rather unmistakable sound of something being struck.
Clang clang clang
A distinct metal striking sound could be heard.
"Yeah, I hear that. But where is it coming from?"
"I'm not sure but, first things first let's get this damn aircraft out of my si-"
A streak of pink energy suddenly fell from the sky and exploded in front of Nicolia before she could do anything to the Pegasus.
"Why if it isn't Agent-man! Didn't expect to see you on this ride!” A familiar sounding voice chirped. Landing gracefully in front of them was their old quarry, Magilily Neu.
“Magilily?! What on earth are you doing here?” Joshua gasped. Of all places, that girl was the last person he expected to see here.
"Oh, you know. I just so happened to be in the area and decided to pop by and visit my favorite Agent.” She teased.
Joshua knew that this was certainly not the case. Behind her the Pegasi's claw winch started whirling to life, tightening the slack between the aircraft and the carriage.
“So you're working with bandits now? That's a new low, even for you."
"Hey, I ain't no bandit! I'm just here to bring home Mr. Nibbles.”
"Mr. Nibbles?..." Both UNITE members responded in unison.
"Yeah, he was just minding his own business up north before you guys started blasting the poor guy!" Magilily remarked as she chided the duo.
“First off, its name is Abyss-1! that's what WE call it! Secondly, that thing is a menace and a danger to those around it!” Joshua retorted.
"And I'll have you know that Mr. Nibbles is a hardworking member of monster society who is dearly missed by his family!" Argued Magilily as she crossed her arms.
“Now you're just making that up!"
"No, I'm not!"
"And how did such a hardworking individual, as you claim, wind up in our world anyway?!"
“Yeah, I kinda, sort of, possibly, might have brought him here by accident." Grinned Magilily sheepishly as she prodded her fingers together, all the while avoiding eye contact with the duo. “I mean, who would have thought that something so fat could swim that fast, eh?" Magilily ended with a nervous laughter. Joshua on the other hand was unimpressed.
"You do know your little pet thrashed my suit, right?"
"Don't be such a cry-baby. Your suit looks fine."
"I was referring to the VARTES.”
"The what-tes?"
"VARTES! My exo-suit!"
"Oh. Well... that silly thing was due for an upgrade anyway." Magilily argued.
"Those things aren't cheap to build you know!"
"I hate to interrupt your amazing conversation, but can we just get to the part where I kick her ass?" Nicolia interrupted.
"Yes, yes, I was just about to get to that.” Joshua affirmed his partner. "We'll take her on together with that tactic we practiced, got it?"
"Erm... Is that formation S-42, or S-40?"
"S-42! S-40 is the one where you juggle grenades."
"Eh, you do know I can hear you, Agent-man.” Magilily murmured as she tapped her foot impatiently.
"Shut it, short stack! I'll get to you in a moment!"
"Look, I'm trying to set things right here! So why don't you just let me take Mr. Nibbles off your hands, and I'll send him back to where he came from, yeah?”
"Absolutely not! We caught him fair and square!” Joshua shouted back. Next to him, Nicolia was slowly losing her patience.
"True, but my sister was the one who found him back there. And she did save your scrawny butt, so I think this is a pretty fair exchange."
"That's it, you're going down, you little twerp!” Nicolia shouted with the last of her patience running dry. Immediately she charged towards Magilily with her sword drawn.
"Nicole, wait!" Joshua yelled as he tried to stop her from running ahead. Magilily smirked and cast a short distance portal in front of Nicolia, causing her to fall straight into it. From a distance he could see her tumbling out of the other portal several carriages back.
"Wow, she never learns from that trick, huh?" laughed Magilily as she watched Nicolia cling to the edge of the train car.
"Looks like we're dance partners for today!" she teased while winking at him.
"Yeah, and this is going to be your swan song." Joshua replied as he unholstered his revolver from his side. As much as he had qualms against shooting a child, Magilily was about to make off with an important military asset. And between Magilily and potentially losing his job, the answer was obvious. With little place to hide on such a narrow battlefield, there was no way he couldn't miss, especially at this range. But before he could pull the trigger, a flash of neon pink light struck his weapon, followed by a loud crack of a whip. The strike sent his gun flying out of his hands and off the edge.
Clutching his hand in agony, a startled Joshua looked in the direction of the attack and saw a blonde haired descending from the aircraft above. Landing in between him and Magilily, she began to berate her.
“Magi, what did we just discuss earlier?"
"Aww, come on Arie! I want to play with Agent-man! He's so much more fun.” whined Magilily as she put on her best pouty face.
"Do. Your. Job." Her tone suddenly becoming more serious.
"Fine, fine. Spoilsport." She muttered with her last breath before creating a portal towards Nicolia to engage her.
"Sorry about that, mate! I'm your dance partner.” The girl spoke confidently while getting into a fighting stance.
Of all the things Joshua had encountered in his time, this was certainly the most unusual. The girl who looked to be about fifteen or so was decked in a white suit of armor which covered her upper torso. The rest of her body was lined with a form fitting black spandex which underlay the rest of her armor. Her feet were wrapped in giant engine-like boots while two wing-like verniers protruded from her back. Atop her head was a white visor with a pink translucent lens. From Joshua's point of view he could see it feeding her information of the battlefield like some kind of high-tech computer. Overall the smooth and intricate design of the suit indicated that this was certainly made by a professional.
"Arie, eh? So, you are the ringleader of this operation?"
The girl chuckled upon hearing that.
“Ringleader? Hardly, mate. I'm just the gal who makes all gadgets and gizmos work.” She replied in a noticeably Australian accent.
Joshua glanced at the modified Pegasus briefly in amazement.
“Well either way, you picked the wrong train to rob!" the agent yelled as he pulled out his XN-5 taser. Pressing a button at the base of the handle, the entire unit extended, converting into its stun baton form. It started to crackle into life as bright purple electrical arcs pulsated between its two conductive blades.
“Oooh, fancy sparkler you have there.” Arie smiled while rubbing her chin inquisitively. “I also got something just as fun."
With a flick of a wrist, a luminescent pink whip extended out of an emmiter from her palm, sparking with iridescent energy. Arie swung her whip a few time around her showcasing the extent of it reach. Joshua had never seen such technology in his life. While UNITE was certainly capable of impressive feats, that suit of hers was beyond anything he had encountered at this point. Who could have made it? She did say she was the one who makes the gadgets, but that's impossible! How could a girl this young have the knowledge and/or resources accomplish such a feat?
His train of thoughts was interrupted once again by that same sound.
Clang clang clang
The sound could be heard again. What was it?
There was no time to think of trivial matters. Their trophy was about to be stolen by a damn of teenager, and he wasn't having any of it. Joshua charged towards Arie while swinging his baton. Before he could hit, the verniers on Arie's suit activated giving her an unprecedented amount of maneuverability. Every strike he attempted to land on her missed as the girl giggled at the sight of a grown man failing to even land a single hit on her. Whenever he missed Arie would counter with a swing of her whip.
As the energy tendrils struck his back, he winced in pain. Enduring it, Joshua turned around and resumed his assault but to no avail. It was a losing battle. No matter how fast Joshua sprinted, he could never lay a finger on her. Even moments when he managed to get close enough, Arie would break out into a capoeira-like fighting style which worked to her advantage given her small, petite frame. He was clearly no match for her fast and random strikes.
"Wow, you're really bad at this. I'm starting to wonder what my sister see's in you.” Arie chortled.
Annoyed by her snark, Joshua stood defiantly against her while trembling from the bruises sustained across his body. What didn't help was that constant striking sound going on at in the background.
Clang clang clang
What on earth was making that noise?
Initially he thought it was Nicolia working her sword. But he's seen her use that blade more than enough times to know what it sounds like.
Forcing him back to reality was Arie's whip smashing against the roof he was on, missing his body by inches. A scorch mark was left where the energy whip impact with the metal. At this point Joshua's suit pretty much full of sear marks from the unrelenting blitz.
As the train continued to trundle down the path, unaware of the situation that was unfolding, it started to turn towards the left while following the rails along the contours of the mountain path. From his position he could see Nicolia and Magilily duking it out as spells were being thrown at each other. Joshua knew that If he is going to help her take down Magilily, he had to deal with Arie first. But there was no way he could beat her under such circumstances. He had to think outside the box. The girl's power suit gave her an unprecedented amount of range and mobility. Even if he was able to get close enough, Arie was no slouch of a fighter. Besides, that whip was not something he wanted to tussle with either. It was painful enough getting struck by it several times.
At that moment an idea suddenly came to his mind.
That whip...its powerful but what if...? It certainly was a bit of a gamble. But given that he was on the losing end of the fight, there wasn't much of a choice in the matter. Standing up confidently against the smug armored girl, he shouted at her.
"That's a very nice ship you have there! It would be a shame if something were to happen to it!” Joshua hinted vaguely while pulling out his collapsible tablet from under his coat.
"What on earth is that?” Arie questioned flatly as she stared at the black device with numerous buttons on it.
"This here is, erm... a... K4 magnetic mine!” Joshua responded while nervously holding onto the device. There was no way in hell that she was going to believe that ruse. He thought to himself.
“That's clearly some kind of portable computer."
“That's what you think. But with just a press of a button, it can reduce an entire house to rubble!”
"You're bluffing!” Arie argued getting noticeably agitated by the unknown device.
"Well, suit yourself!” The agent shrugged as he prepared to toss it at her ship.
"Oh no you don't!" Arie scowled as she launched her whip at his arm.
This was the moment Joshua was waiting for. As the purple energy tendril curved towards him, Joshua dropped the tablet in his hand and lunged forward to grab the end of her whip. A hot electrical surge course through his body the moment he laid hands on it. Arie was taken aback by his actions, but was partially amused by his adversary's lack of foresight.
"Not a smart move, mate!” she taunted, increasing the power levels of the whip to dislodge him. But Joshua wasn't going to let go much to her surprise.
“Crikey, you're a persistent bugger!...”
"You'll find that 'persistent' is my middle name!" Joshua responded as he slowly started to pull Arie towards him. Filled with equal amounts of pain and determination, the UNITE agent started to close the distance towards Arie; wrapping the access slack from her whip around the stun baton. Her small size made it easier to draw her in, but with each coil the intensity of the shock amplified until he could barely stand. Arie realized she had fallen into his trap and couldn't let him get any closer. Her suit's Vernier kicked into action once more as she lifted off the ground.
"Get... down... here!” Joshua yelled mustering all the strength he had, holding on by sheer willpower and adrenaline. His hands were singed by the current flowing through her energy whip, and the pain was unthinkable. Despite that, the unnaturally resistant agent held on; his boots digging into the ground.
The more she struggled the faster he reeled her in. Even Arie was amazed by how he could have lasted this long. Fiddling with the controls on her wrist glove, she tried to deactivate her whip, but the counter-pulse from Joshua's stun baton was keeping it tangible. With a single, mighty tug, Joshua slammed Arie back down onto the ground. In that brief moment, he continued to coil the remainder of her slack until he was almost face to face with her. She had fallen into his trap. Arie tried to retaliate but her capoeira style of fighting was only effective if she had the space to move. Being anchored to Joshua meant that she was essentially handicapped against him.
Arie knew this and grabbed onto the broad end of his stun baton. As the electrical current from it coursed through both individuals, she mustered her strength and snapped the baton at its base. The sudden burst of energy short circuited her glove and disabled the energy whip. Smoke started to bellow from its palm emitter as she quickly detached it from the rest of her suit. Joshua used this moment to grapple her as the two began to exchange blows each other. While Arie was a competent fighter at mid-range, up close and personal the more experienced agent had the upper hand. It didn't take much effort for Joshua to overpower the petite girl.
A single well placed strike across Arie's face with enough to cause her to lose balance. As she teetered on the edge of the carriage, the agent quickly grabbed onto her arm and pulled her back in before tackling her to the ground. Pinning her body down with his knee, Joshua unsheathed his emergency combat knife from a scabbard on the back of his belt. He pointed it at her neck with one hand while tightly holding on to her suit's collar with the other. Up close she could see her left cheek was bruised from the blow he landed on her. The force was strong enough to even dent the side of her visor with visible cracks on its lens. In spite of all that Arie remained composed, grinning at him with absolute defiance. Never once did she show a hint of fear even in the face of potential death.
"Pretty smart move you did back thar'. Looks like I'll have to iron out the flaws in my suit when I get back.” Arie boasted despite the knife's edge being so close to her neck.
“Thanks. I'll admit that your tech is pretty impressive." Joshua responded while trying to catch his breath. “But you're way out of your league if you think you can beat a UNITE Agent!"
Arie started laughing upon hearing him say that, much to his chagrin.
"Whats so funny?!”
"Oh, I had no intention of beating ya, mate." The blonde chuckled.
That sentence alone perplexed him as the metal striking sound in the background started to become louder.
"I just needed to distract ya.”
Clang clang CLANG!
A giant metal chunk flew off the back of the carriage that the Pegasus was attached to. At that point, another female voice could be heard.
"Arie, the last lock is off!"
"Good on ya, Lynndy! Take it away, Meri!" Arie shouted. At the moment the gigantic aircraft started to ascend, lifting the container off the flatbed car it was originally bolted to.
"What the-?" a dumbstruck Joshua spouted, finally realizing what that sound was. All this time he had no idea there were other accomplices in the raid.
"Well, it was nice playing with ya, but it's time for me to say Hooroo!"
Placing her foot against Joshua's chest, she activated the thruster on her boot, blasting him several meters back. Nearly falling off the rail car, he pulled himself up to see Arie boosting up onto the container. Sitting on its edge with her legs crossed she gave him a wink and a casual salute. Meanwhile a small portal appeared next to her with Magilily appearing out of it. She too started to laugh and wave at the now hapless agent below them.
"Oi! Don't leave me behind!” The same female voice from earlier suddenly shrieked.
Joshua turned and saw a short browned hair girl climbing onto the carriage he was on. The girl looked even younger than Arie and Magilily and was decked in a light pink t-shirt with matching shoes and a short black skirt. What made it peculiar was the large pink strand of hair coursing from the right side of her head. On the Pegasus, both Arie and Magilily were gesturing for her to climb on. Considering that they were already pretty high in the air, Joshua realized that this was his chance to capture at least one of the perpetrators.
"Hey, get back here!” he yelled while making a dash for her.
The little girl didn't even turn to look. All of a sudden she was launched into the air by an invisible force. It carried her all the way up to the container several meters into the air where her comrades helped her on. The sight alone left him aghast while the Pegasus veered off. As the winch positioned the container closer to its underside, the aircraft's four modified engines tilted forward and roared into action. In less than a minute it was out of view, leaving the convoy and the two UNITE operatives behind.
Joshua slumped down, horrified by the turn of events. Clenching his fist, he smashed his scarred hand against the train car. In the distance Nicolia slowly caught up to him, appearing to have also sustained some abuse from Magilily. She plonked herself next to Joshua with an exhausted expression plastered over her face. As the system jamming across the convoy lifted the alarm for an attack started blaring across the evening sky.
“Director Ares is not going to be pleased when she hears this."
“No, Nicole, she most certainly won't be..."

Wow, it sure has been awhile since the last entry.
As you guys know, I'm an absolute sci-fi junkie. Ever since I saw Arie Neu's power suit, I was absolutely in love with the design. I knew that when I finally came around to doing her entry, I would have to showcase her jump suit unit! As luck would have it, not long ago B-Star made an update to Arie's artwork, which you can find here .
I was already starting work on her drawing at the time, and this was what I needed to perfect the design. I took a few creative liberties design. Notably, I added thruster vents on the wings and some additional panel lines across her suit as well.
Seriously though, you should do more power-suit variants! I would LOVE to detail all the designs you come up with!
Anyway, I've been wanting do an chapter which showcased how effective the Neu sisters are when they decide to put their heads together on something. Looks like I final got that chance. Surprisingly the story didn't take as long as I originally expected. If anything, I already had the first draft typed out before l even completed the drawing's line art. Also this is my first attempt at writing from a third person perspective after a long time. I might continue to do so for the subsequent chapters.
Once again, do let me know if you spot any spelling or grammatical errors!

Okay, I was just asking because these seem to be from UNITE's point of view so I wasn't sure. But then again they did kidnap a little girl just to get Magilily. Never mind.

If the Neu’s had a quarter for every victory against UNITE, how much do you think would they make? XD
Man, this was a very thrilling chapter. Good job with bringing Arie’s character to life as well as keeping it spot on, no doubt you did your study on her. It makes no sense when characters gets all OOC for no reason in fanfic stories, I wish most fanfic writers could just do their studies and stick to canon personalities for certain characters that they borrow from other forms of media, but you are definitely an expert in my book (No pun intended).
I was fraught with dread and anxiety when Joshua tricked Arie and it looked like he was gonna defeat her. Then again, I should’ve expected this given the fact that Arie is a 15 year old girl going up against a man who probably has had years of experience as a federal agent working with a Monster/Shadow hunting organization, but I felt a sense of relief and excitement when it turned out SHE tricked him instead. Yep, that girl never ceases to amaze anybody, including you and I. Imagine how the Neu Family would feel had Arie been killed during the raid on the UNITE locomotive? Because it sure looked like Joshua and Nicolia were gonna emerge victorious this time around for a change, I would certainly not be happy if UNITE succeeds in defeating the Neu Family. 😡
I have to admit though that even if that Zamtrios didn’t mean any harm and that there weren’t any people within the danger zone, both Joshua and Nicolia have a point that that creature is a (potential) danger and menace to those around it. I mean, what if it started rampaging through a densely populated/urban area just because it wants to “go home” to the Monster Hunter World? As much as I hate to say it, Joshua and Nicolia were just doing their jobs and responding to an otherworldly threat that could’ve killed innocents had it not been neutralized. At least the Zamtrios is back where belongs now, but do you think the Neu Family would now be classified as terrorists, insurgents, or outlaws by the federal government for what they are doing, including helping creatures that Magilily accidentally let loose into our world? Do you this is why the Neu Family moved to Royal Woods, because they could be what you would call wanted fugitives who are trying to hide from the government? If that is the Neu Family’s reason for moving into Royal Woods, then I feel bad because they just can’t have a chance at having a happy life together as a family since they are not considered to be normal.
Anyway, I find it ironic and somewhat baffling that Nicolia, a ruthless and battle-hardened soldier, would really be into fashion. Normally, most women who do a “man’s work” would embarrassed about wearing what they would call “ridiculous, funny-looking clothing,” which I can relate to, LoL. I guess Nicolia isn’t as stoic as she appears to be nor is she above being the typical woman who likes to be so extravagant and showy with clothing just to gain attention. XD On that note though, I don’t think Nicolia needs to have long hair in order to look good in a dress, in my opinion, having short actually does compliment a woman’s appearance just as much as long hair does.
In fact, if Nicolia feels like it, I think she should take break from her relentless goals to defeat the Neu Family and go out to get a breather once in a while, you know, like a “girl’s night out” all by her own. Maybe should go out to find some clothes or dresses that might peak her interest, hang out at a nightclub or a pub while wearing a dress that she picked, and get to know people she normally doesn’t interact with more often. I think Nicolia needs a well overdue vacation after working very hard so much at UNITE. Hopefully, she could find a good vacation spot to relax at, maybe a 5 star hotel resort and go to a beach to relax.
If you like, here’s an interesting idea that I might have for you: What if Taylor decided to use Nicolia as a model in order to measure and make dresses? If you ask me, Taylor definitely makes dresses better and more fabulous than any fashion company makes. I think Taylor would come up with an outfit that would suit Nicolia more than what those bland fashion companies sell. But what do you think about that idea?

Huh...
I guess RaishaGS take on the AU shows how powerful but reckless Magilily can be; and that U.N.I.T.E. seems to be the clean-up for her mistakes, yet never gets the credit for keeping the world safe...
I wonder how long it'll take for Magi to realize the danger of her actions ( just like Tony Stark in Avengers).
That being said, your take on The Neu House really put a whole different light 😅

I like to think Magi will eventually go through a lot of character development and become more responsible once she realizes how much her reckless actions have affected those around her; we can only hope that Magi will make the right choices in the future, unlike Star Butterfly during the finale of Star Vs. the Forces of Evil.
But don’t worry though, you already Magi doesn’t intentionally mean any harm and she’s not a bad person, she’s just made mistakes is all. In fact, now that I think about it, what if the reason behind her reckless behavior is because she’s just a troubled girl trying to cope with her past as well as who she really is?

Probably enough money to properly fight back against them. lol
Thanks man, I do my best to stick with the source material. Even if info is limited, I try not to deviate too far from what is already established in canon. In any case, I'm glad this story has been a thrilling ride for you!
I'll admit, the fight scene took a bit of brainstorming to get right. Namely, how to balance out the the abilities of Joshua and Arie. I wanted show that while Arie is a good fighter, she still has the physique and strength of a child. And while Joshua may be grossly incompetent at times (lol), he is still a legitimate threat given his prior experience as a an Enforcer.
Oh well, such is the life of Joshua and Nicolia. Its a thankless job and they are always on the receiving end of things, but they are still ever so resilient. As for the Neu's, what happens to them will be covered in the last entry of this series, so hold on tight for that!
Haha, outside of battle Nicolia does enjoy the simpler things in life such as fashion. She and some of her fellow Enforcers do hang out after work hours, mostly to get themselves raving drunk. lol But you're right though, they do need a long holiday.
I wold love to see Taylor and Nicolia interacting over fashion, granted she doesn't kill her first. To see Nicolia wearing a custom party dress made by Taylor would be quite a sight.

Oh believe me, I know what it’s like when trying not to deviate too far from canon, even if info is limited.
I’ll bet it took a lot of brainstorming for you to write this, I do it all the time.
Ok, I don’t mind waiting until the end to see what happens.
Yep, Nicolia would definitely look fabulous in a dress made by Taylor. Do you think Taylor also uses Merida as a model in order to make dresses sometimes? In fact, I’m not sure if Taylor is considered to be a threat to UNITE or if they are hunting for her as well since they don’t have that much info on the Neu Family at the moment (I’m not even sure if UNITE knows that Taylor is related to Neu Family), but since these events take place before the Neu’s moved to Royal Woods, what I would love to see in Taylor’s Codex Entry is if Nicolia, who is out shopping about for new clothes and maybe some dresses, somehow stumbles upon Taylor’s Retail Shop and maybe this will be like the first time the two of them met.
So maybe what could happen is Nicolia decides to browse around the shop and she soon stumbles upon Taylor. The two of them interact with each other over fashion and Taylor tells Nicolia that she happens to be the owner of the shop, which the latter finds to be surprising and bewildering given the fact that the former is a teenager. Then Taylor suddenly gets an idea and asks Nicolia if she can use her as a model. Nicolia is surprised that a girl like Taylor would give such a kind offer to a stranger, and when questioned about it, Taylor simply replies that Nicolia deserves a kind gift for fighting real hard for her country just about every day. Of course, Nicolia couldn’t decline since she didn’t want to be rude to Taylor and also because she’s interested in trying out one of her custom made dresses anyway.
So Taylor takes Nicolia into the room where she makes her dresses, begins taking her measurements, and starts working on a dress to “compliment Nicolia’s character” as she puts it. While this was going, Nicolia asks Taylor what her family life is like. Taylor doesn’t reveal the names of her family, but she goes on that she has 8 sisters (much to Nicolia’s surprise) and describes their personalities and what they do for hobbies while leaving out the details and facts about them being a scientifically, magically unnatural group of individuals with unique powers and abilities since she doesn’t want to attract that much attention to her family. Taylor goes on to explain that her family are the ones who took her under their wing when nobody else would, that they gave her all of the love and kindness any kid could ever want, and they taught her how to be the loving and caring young woman she is right now.
Taylor then stops working as her mood suddenly shifts into somewhat of a mixture of happiness and sadness while reminiscing about the time her family first adopted her and memories of her happiest moments with them flowed through her mind. Nicolia gets confused by this, but then Taylor states in a broken voice, “If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t be here right now” before she bursts into tears. Nicolia, thinking she accidentally invoked bad memories, instinctively hugged Taylor to comfort her. Taylor eventually stopped crying and thanked Nicolia for the hug while apologizing for getting emotional in front of a customer which she feels she isn’t supposed to do, but Nicolia told her she doesn’t need to be sorry. Although Nicolia tells her she doesn’t know why she decided to hug her, she explains to Taylor that seeing her cry like that probably reminded her of her loved ones (Family and Fiancé), whom she would comfort and give them her love to whenever they were sad, before revealing to Taylor that her loved ones were “taken away from her forever” and because of that, she wants revenge on “the ones responsible.” (That being the Shadow Beasts, but Taylor doesn’t know this nor does she know that Nicolia is working with UNITE in order to get revenge)
Taylor is shocked that Nicolia would want revenge, but she then she has an epiphany that Nicolia’s lust for revenge was why she looked like she was carrying a ruthless and cold air around her when she first entered Taylor’s Shop. Taylor then gives a heart-melting speech to Nicolia, maybe something like this:
“Nicolia, I think you’re making a huge mistake. Do you think revenge is what you really want, is it worth your time and effort? Perhaps you’re not thinking this through, but I want you to understand this: there were those who believed the path to revenge is the right path to choose, but in the end, revenge has only lead them to their demise. Maybe you’re not being open-minded to what the future has in store for you, but there are more important things for you in life than revenge, such as love. I know how hard it can be when the people you love are taken away from you; sometimes life might seem cruel, but I believe that in a way, life is trying to teach each and every one of us something important. I think life is teaching you that your family and fiancé are not gone forever. As long as you retain your memories of them, they are still here with you in a way, they will always be here with you for as long as you allow your memories of them to fill your heart with love. Please, don’t allow your memories to be the catalyst for hatred. My memories of my family are the reason why I opened up my own retail shop, so I can give the same love my family gave me to others by making clothes for people, love is meant to be shared with others after all. Love can even guide you to a brighter future, don’t give up on love because it was taken away from you. If you learn to let go of your hate and share the love that was once given to you by your loved ones, I can guarantee you love will come back to you and by golly, there might even someone to love you like your fiancé did.”
Nicolia however replies that there’s nobody she knows who would love her, but Taylor on the other hand tells her that she loves her as a friend regardless of the fact they only just met, which surprises Nicolia. Sometime later, Taylor is finally finished with making the dress for Nicolia, who starts to admire herself while looking at a mirror. Nicolia tells Taylor that the dress is perfect and she’s ready to pay for it, but Taylor declines the payment, telling her that she can have it free of charge. Nicolia is once again touched by Taylor’s kindness and thanks her for the dress. The two bid each other farewell and Nicolia leaves the shop and heads back to UNITE’s main headquarters, where most of Nicolia’s colleagues are perplexed upon seeing THE Nicolia Kansa, UNITE’s most persistent, ruthless, and no-nonsense enforcer, with an unusual bright smile on her face unlike the kind they’ve seen her with before. Joshua notices and confusingly wonders what he had missed.
Later, Nicolia is busy filing out paperwork in her office and is happy for getting a new dress, especially since it was made by someone she never expected would be so kind to her. Nicolia can hardly even recall when was the last time someone (other than Joshua) has shown her the same level of kindness Taylor has showed her since she first joined UNITE. Nicolia then thinks about the kind speech Taylor delivered to her and begins to consider whether or not what the young couturier told her about love and memories is true. As Nicolia starts reminiscing on her memories of her dead loved ones, she then thought about Taylor’s family and remembered how Taylor described them. But she stops in her train of thought as she recalls there is something fishy about Taylor and her family. When Taylor described the personalities and hobbies of her family members, Nicolia mentally compares how they almost sound similar to those of “a certain family” that UNITE has been going after for a long time now, but she dismisses it as a coincidence. But when Nicolia stops to look at the dress Taylor made for her, she notices the tag 🏷 attached to the dress. On that tag is the Name/Logo for “Taylor’s Tailor Retail,” the fabric and materials to make the dress, and eventually Nicolia notices the part on the tag which states that the dress is “Made by Taylor NEU!” “Neu?!” Nicolia thought upon realizing what Taylor’s last name is. Neu is the name of the Family UNITE has been hunting she realized. It doesn’t take long for Nicolia to put two to two together before it finally dawns on her:
Taylor is in fact a member of the Neu Family!!!
youtu.be/IEUXjgoI3lk
BOOM! CLIFFHANGER!!! What happens next is up to you. 🤣🤣🤣
So what do you think of my idea for Taylor’s Codex Entry? I think it would be nice to have a very light-hearted and cute story for once rather than it being filled with action and suspense like in your other stories, LoL. I like to think that Taylor is the only Neu Sister Nicolia is hesitant to kill, talk about befriending the enemy, am I right? Maybe Taylor will be the one to brighten up Nicolia’s heart and maybe at some point, because of her unexpected friendship with Taylor, Nicolia will realize that she is right about there being more important things in life than revenge. You know, it makes me think of Treasure Planet where Long John Silver realizes that his father-like love for Jim is more important than his obsession with the treasure, don’t you think? But let me know what you think so far.
