I can just picture how that's gonna go. in the middle of the fight between teamrocket and Azurai, Meowth scratches Azurai's horn then Azurai LOSES HIS SHIT, and then fireballs teamrocket into the sky.

But it raises the question as to whether or not the younger generation will even know who they are (or were) before the comic relief aspect came into their dynamic.

To be fair, they were threatening for about one episode before being defeated by a Caterpie. I guess they were super serious in the anime for Black & White anime, though? Is that what you're referring to?

Yeah kind of. They were considered the 'Big Bad' in the Kanto/Johto regions (even if they weren't all thet good at it), but I think their silliness was ramped up a notch from Hoenn and onward.
I haven't watched past the Hoenn region so I'm not sure how serious they became in Black & White, but I think that may have been an attempt to re-introduce them as bad guys instead of just comic relief?
I have no idea what's happening with Team Rocket now, but I've got to admit I love the episodes that focus on them and their character development. It fills me all up with those warm fuzzy feelings
