Second First Contact - Depicting a scene from the book Expedition by Wayne Barlowe

Like the title says, this is a painting of a scene from Wayne Barlowe’s book Expedition. Considered by many to be the father of speculative evolution. As I said before, Wayne Barlowe is a personal hero of mine and I greatly admire his work. (And I am honored that he follows me on Instagram.^^)
His book, its documentary and his work on movies like Avatar are the reasons I got into art and creature design. Even if I didn’t know of him at the time. This painting is a small thank you letter for the man that started it all.
It depicts one of the final scenes from Expedition. The scene where the author makes first contact with the second sentient alien species ever discovered by Humanity. Hence the title. (I guess that’s a huge spoiler, but the book is over 30 years old, so I think it’s ok. You should read it regardless.)
I had great trouble depicting the sheer size of these massive creatures, and as a result I had to change the scales a bit, to make the composition work. But nothing too drastic. My artstyle is a bit “looser” than his, I don’t paint as detailed as he does, but I hope that the original shines through. Anyway, it took me a very long time to paint it, so I hope you like it.
