Description
DweomervoreForgotten realms; Waterdeep - internal illustration.
Acrylic, approx 6" x 7"
Original artwork SOLD.
Working on Dungeons and Dragons you are often asked to interpret and create images for new creatures. Although you are given a brief there is often a lot of freedom allowed for your own interpretation. This is one dragon-like critter I was particularly happy with. He might appear cute, but he's pretty vicious!
The D&D internal illustrations are usually presented in a 'vignette' style. This means that the image doesn't go all the way up to the edge of the frame, or box, that most images go into. This image is an example of a vignette.
Whilst this vignette isn't especially elaborate it does allow for the silhouette of the figure to stand out strongly. However it can also mean that there is little context or setting for a creature. This is why I added the helmet. Not only does it add more visual interest but also provides some scale. Asssuming the wearer was human this makes the Dweomervore quite a small beastie, but perhaps vicious enough that the helmet is from one of it's victims....

I was able to find him in Dragon Magazine 307, but I haven't dug through my MMs yet.

Okay - I didn't know he made it into Dragon Mag. I checked my own files - Forgotten Realms: Waterdeep was the book.

Ahh, I think I have that one but I don't dig through the FR books as much. Good to know though since I'm joining a FR campaign soon... might be able to get a Dweomervore familiar!

In D&D do they give you a written description first, or do they write the description to match the artist's illustration?

When they commission artwork they provide a detailed description of what they want in the image, but the composition is left up to me, along with a certain amount of the design. Especially if it is a new creature or suchlike.

Yes,he is adorable and yes,he looks vicious as well
I absolutely love the tail, looks very "alive",and the amount of detail (you probably hear this on a daily basis eh?) is mind blowing.
Awesome

That is very cool. Your art style reminds me of the cover art I see on books connected to the Forgotten Realms series. You have a great technique here. I love your attention for detail when it comes to the composition as well as the character. I also like your color use.
Thanks for the info. You learn something new every day.

The first books I worked on for WotC were Forgotten Realms, but my covers have been for other ranges.
Thanks

Smiles. I love recognizing various art styles. I read a lot of books and I pick them first by the artwork on the cover, second by what the book is about. This always works for me.=0)
Glad your art has expanded.

I took a real good look at this but I think that either I'm too tired at 3am or there's only one arm.
sorry to have to be the one to point this out if you didn't realise it (or if I'm making a fool of myself and I just can't see it properly) But it came as a HUGE shock to me when I noticed the wing coming up from behind his head (or is his other hand/paw one fingered?), and it seems that either the arm is coming down slightly into the background, or the wing can't be seen coming coming down as far as the close one....I'm sorry if I don't make much sense (I'm terrible at explaining things and get confuddled easily by simple things.) Don't forget, it's still absolutely awesome! Love it!

Ok that is really cool... but why did you have to give it a name I will never be able to pronounce?

RalphHorsley In reply to Genobee [2007-03-30 12:32:04 +0000 UTC]
it was a commissioned piece for D&D - so I never got to choose the name

Hey!!! tell your pet... oh... thing... not to leave his... uh... well... you know... on my mithril helmet! It's new... oh... almost new i mean... and the salesman said it was $40 but he was cutting his own throat so i could have it for $3... erm..
Great looking critter and as always amazing details - love the skin sagging on his throat/chest - i think it really makes him more "alive"! And even though i don't know much about technical aspect of drawing, the idea of using the helm to give a hint about his size is really well thought - spiffy!
(btw... does "dweomervore" means it eat magic?
Keep him away from my magic beans as well!!
)
