Description
RunefangBlack Library novel cover; Β©Games Workshop
Acrylic, Approx 13" x 20".
Original artwork SOLD.
The mythical sword Runefang is capable of destroying all the enemies of the Empire... and it will need to!
This was painted a little while ago, around the same time as Curse of the Necrarch, but I had failed to post it sooner
The composition was dictated to me, but I had fun with portraying the undead, and mass battle scene. I chose a lighter patch of sky and some glint on the blade to add focus to the tip, as I knew the trade dress was going to fall across the middle.
Here it is with the trade dress:

Amazing work! Love the highlights all over the sword and armour, and the incredible expressions on all the zombies' and soldiers' faces! I also notice that the colour purple does generally seem to be prevalent in your work; is this significant?

Thank you.
Hmm, I guess I like purple? I know I favour it for shadows, it seems more flexible than blue...

Ahh, I see. So you find yourself actively reaching for the purple more often, when you're deepening the shadows?
You're more than welcome.

Yes, but not a bad one. It seems to work, so "why not?!" I say.

Neither rain nor storm nor gloom of night will stop the bearer of this sword from doing his duty.
Neither shall zombie hordes.
On the subject of the zombies: What sticks out to me the most is the one arrow casually sticking in the zombie hand. It's... well, part of why this is awesome.

yet another amazing piece mate!
Sorry I didnt comment or critique the last few, busy .....
Anyway, yeah this is a heck of a piece.
Its too bad that the artists arent more of a priority when the books are described..... I could probably find so many artists to study should I know the artist and not have the book.
The blade isnt as reflective as I know your skills are capable of, but I guess with the lettering in the background you wouldn't want to over do it. ^_^
The mountains seem a little odd, or maybe not 'far' enough..... but other than that you have gone and done it again

Very cool painting Ralph, I love all the detail in the zombies and how you used the light on the sword. Nice one!

The sword seems a little stubby and the design of it is very plain, but as you mentioned, that's what the client asked for. I do love your undead... especially the dude in the left foreground with the hat, he's my favorite.

RalphHorsley In reply to Inkthinker [2008-07-29 12:20:35 +0000 UTC]
The sword design was already there - I couldn't change it. likewise to make the sword thinner/longer would have made it a lot less pronounced - there was a compromise that had to be struck.
pleased you like the undead

Inkthinker In reply to RalphHorsley [2008-07-30 03:01:15 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I figured it was something like that... I've been following your stuff long enough now that it didn't look like something you'd do yourself, so it must've be client's imperative.
Heh. I was just explaining to someone the other day, that being a pro means doing what they need you to do whether you like it or not, and the best way to deal with it is to try and make the stuff you DO have control over that much cooler.

Yep, they are the ones paying, so you have to try and do what they want, even when they're wrong

Not wrong, never wrong, just... perhaps misinformed about what would be most aesthetically pleasing and conceptually impressive in terms of design.
*ahem*
I am practicing for my BA in BS.

The two zombies bring this to life. Without them, it would merely be a picture of a sword. You turned this in to a live scene full of anticipation. Well done!

the level of detail you lavish is just awesome... despite being daubed with blood, the Runefang and the gauntlet really stand out from the rest of the painting..
as always well done although this somehow falls short...

RalphHorsley In reply to AzraelDarkAngel540 [2008-07-29 12:18:26 +0000 UTC]
I was hoping the sword & gauntlet would be clear against the rest of the image, so glad that works for you
It's a shame you feel it falls short... I wonder how much that has to do with the composition not really being my own...

No no I didn't explain myself well... when I said "as always well done although this somehow falls short..." I was meaning that the phrase 'well done' falls short of praising such a great piece of work... that well done isn't enough..

No there's no reason to feel that way... I feel stupid myself for expressing myself ineffectively in such a gross way that I put the wrong message across and you couldn't think otherwise.. For all the BA Hons in English i'm doing lol..

Pleased you like it - the viewpoint and layout of the sword was dictated to me in the brief, but I tried to make it less static by the use of the 2 lead zombies
