Description
RunefangBlack Library novel cover; Β©Games Workshop
Acrylic, Approx 13" x 20".
Original artwork SOLD.
The mythical sword Runefang is capable of destroying all the enemies of the Empire... and it will need to!
This was painted a little while ago, around the same time as Curse of the Necrarch, but I had failed to post it sooner
The composition was dictated to me, but I had fun with portraying the undead, and mass battle scene. I chose a lighter patch of sky and some glint on the blade to add focus to the tip, as I knew the trade dress was going to fall across the middle.
Here it is with the trade dress:

Ooh... Great job. The book itself didn't really appeal to me, but that doesn't stop the art from kicking butt . It really feels epic in the truest sense of the word

Very cool, man. Reminds me of the old Talisman artwork. You ever play that old-school board game?

i do not like the palette

RalphHorsley In reply to Auoro [2008-07-29 15:45:38 +0000 UTC]
Well the trade dress version is how it is ultimately intended to be seen, and what it was commissioned for - so I can live with that , but sorry you dislike the palette. What would you have chosen?

Auoro In reply to RalphHorsley [2008-07-30 03:27:43 +0000 UTC]
think better is not the palette , i just get use to digital paintings and everything looks different , in real life XD too much virtual thing in my life
ill ask you if you tried digital paint but i am sure you answer this many times before.

I have never really painted digitally, but do the odd tweak in Photoshop.

Absolutely amazing! Great detail and view.
I love the shine on the sword and the zombie/skeletons in gowns in the background.

I know what you mean by having fun with doing the mass battle scene. Thats what I usually do on my free time and its really fun to go into the details of each participant in the battle. Always happy to see another one out there. Personally I find it rare to find other works portraying mass battles aside from the industrial era and post renaissance era.

Yeah, not many people tend to do mass battle scenes, but like you they are my favourite

it is my fervent wish though that one day I can do that for things like Warhammer. In that i sorta envy you. But I'm still studying so i'll leave that to my future.

One problem I have with this... it's called Runefang, isn't it? Where are the runes (or the dwarven/norse shape of the sword)?

I was working from an existing design - I had no ocntrol over the sword's look

Aulbath In reply to RalphHorsley [2008-07-29 16:00:49 +0000 UTC]
Would you have changed the sword if you had control? if so, what would it look like?

RalphHorsley In reply to Aulbath [2008-07-31 08:26:24 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I would have jazzed it up more. It is very plain at present.
