Thousand ThronesWarhammer Fantasy Roleplay cover artwork.

They had paraded for countless miles, yet still their cracked voices rang out in worshipful song.
This was a recently completed cover for the forthcoming WFRP supplement. I wanted to capture the classic grimy Warhammer feel, and mood.
I choose a palette that ranged form yellow to deep purpley-reds. I felt this was suitably atmospheric. Then to emphasis the focal point of the picture I put a green shade on the palanquin, and also centred the light source here, consequently becoming the lightest part of the picture.

In WH FB humans live in terrible world, without hope, surrounded by countless enemies. And death is the only beging of true suffering. Demons, monsters, heretics all around. And prophecies about End of the World. So, sometimes insanity is the only good choice.

Still a lot more endurable than 40k, though. Technically speaking.
Unless you count the amount of violence, madness and misery proportionally, FB will always have significantly less of it in total than 40k.
The Inquisition is fond of its technicalities.

Funny thing. I finished the game with some friends and it was a good experience. Good work by the way. Looking at the cover returned me to that state of mind to role play every time I went overboard.

I love your works you made for Warhammer Fantasy. I would like to thank you for your good job. This cover picture is one of my favorite followed closely by the cover you made for the awesome WFRPG book "Tome of Corruption". Your work catch up very well the mood and spirit of this universe, dark & grim. It always pleasant to take a book with such nice art work for cover as you made. All the WFRPG fans are glad for that
Thanks again

Thanks very much for saying so. I especially enjoy the Warhammer background, and I'd like to think that shows

No offense, but I'm slightly confused. Are these people undead or just horribly diseased peasants?

The latter is closest - this is the Warhammer setting, and these are extreme religious flagellants who are on a very long crusade/pilgrimage - GW wanted them to look very messed up!

I see. The entire Empire's not like that though, is it?

Vladr27 In reply to Zousha [2016-11-12 02:41:25 +0000 UTC]
No, the Empire is like typical medieval country, close to Germany or smth like that. Flagellants, fanatical followers fo god Sigmar though, believe that World is going to End, and that people should sacrifice EVERYTHING, all wealth they have, all posesions, even their flesh and blood (in battles against heretics, monsters and unbelievers), to become closer to God and be welcomed to his domain after death. Because only Sigmar can save their souls from Gods of Chaos, that feeds upon souls of sinners and impure. And some of them are just bat-shit crazy or have nothing to lose anyway.

No, but it is a dark and grim setting - which is why I enjoy illustrating it so much

Well if you are a High Elf maybe so - but I am not sure why they would try and persuade you otherwise - the grimness is the fun part

I'm the kind of guy who plays "lawful good" paladiny types, and they're trying to convince me the Warhammer setting doesn't punish things like altruism, moderation and goodness. The overall impression I have of the Warhammer franchises is that it's not about whether a thing is good or bad, but just how bad is it. That's pretty discouraging for an optimist like myself.

RalphHorsley In reply to Zousha [2008-12-17 10:36:56 +0000 UTC]
I don't think the setting punishes those things, but the sense of the world is that Chaos is weedling its way in all the time, and that most humans are vunerable to falling under its sway given the right circumstances. Trying to be someone of principles and 'heroic' character within that setting can be great fun. Indeed most scenarios are about trying to stop those who have been subverted, it is all about holding back the tide of Chaos.

Well that's good. Our roleplay is starting up soon. I'm playing a Bretonnian knight-errant.

RalphHorsley In reply to Zousha [2008-12-17 21:43:38 +0000 UTC]
Sounds an interesting character. The Bretonnian's have quite a different culture to the Empire, so that might be a good aspect to play up. The career system can seem a little odd, especially if taken very literally, but it allows lots of flexibility in character development.
Any idea which scenario you are playing?

We're doing a freeform play-by-post online. We were told by the person running it to pick from army lists for Warhammer Fantasy Battle. Though I'm a bit concerned about the rest of the group. One person's making a mage-assassin character who was born in Mousillon, learned magic in the Empire, was captured on the way home by the Skaven, tortured and exposed to warpstone to be driven insane, then became every bit as bad as the Skaven and was trained to be an assassin and spy who uses the power of the Horned Rat and is fanatically devoted to her Skaven masters. The person's asked if her character can be the sister of mine...yeah, scary. I don't know if I should try to go along with it or attack her on sight, knowing how Bretonnians and Skaven don't exactly mix.

Hmm, sounds like this person hasn't left a lot of scope to roleplay in the actual game, but has had all their adventures already!Personally I think her character sound unplayable if you are meant to be playing in a group - it would be like having orcs & dwarfs adventuring together!

Zousha In reply to RalphHorsley [2008-12-17 22:37:30 +0000 UTC]
Oh it's worse than that! One of the people is going to be playing a high elf...and another character wants to play a dark elf!
I'm beginning to wonder if the roleplay's actually going to get out of the conceptual stage. I want a "co-op" roleplay, not a "PVP" one!

Zousha In reply to RalphHorsley [2008-12-21 18:28:08 +0000 UTC]
We've been wroking on smoothing out initial difficulties as we begin. The dark elf is apparently reformed, the vampire's not a bad person, and the Bretonnian who serves the Skaven's sort of been turned loose. They don't really have any orders for her. And she is my knight errant's cousin, so we have the means to keep her in line. The lizardman doesn't like having to work for the Dark Elves, and he once freed a group of future slaves, smashing the ship they were on as it passed near Uluthuan. The slaves still didn't survive though. The lizardman didn't realize that humans don't have the same endurance as he did, and they couldn't survive the swim. So in essence, he abandoned them on the sinking ship and returned to Naggaroth to continue his service. Darkly humorous that was.

Well, being a 'good' character will certainly make you stand out from the majority of the bunch

Zousha In reply to RalphHorsley [2008-12-22 04:08:05 +0000 UTC]
Actually not as much as it seems. There's a High Elf Swordsman of Hoeth, and the Lizardman may serve the Dark Elves, but it's not by choice. He's a good guy, all things considered. So it's about even. Of course, I'll be looking for any opportunity to smite the evil dudes.
