The Dungeons & Dragons supplement Rules Compendium has just been released, and this was one of my pieces from the book. Details of which can be found here: [link]
Taunting Memory was great fun as for once it depicts a group of characters socialising after the fight. Usually I find myself showing a combat in progress, but this time we get to see how the Dark Elf behaved when faced with a Beholder - although I also like the fact you could interpret this as a prophecy of events yet to happen - either way he doesn't look too happy about the telling.
The viewers first attention is drawn to the Dark Elf by the strong contrast of his skin and hair. Something further reinforced by his clear profile and the framing element of the light coloured picture on the wall behind him. The row of heads helps keep our attention in the upper part of the picture, whilst various lines, the Elven staff, Dark Elf's sword and scroll case, Dwarf's arm and roof beams, help draw the eye towards the conjured memory. This in turn is more saturated than the surrounding elements, again, hopefully, getting our attention.

My favorite part about this piece is the "outfit" the elf is wearing. The feather-boa-type accents that swirl from the bottom of the frame right up to the top of her head all look fantastic with the little twigs and leaves poking out here and there. It allows you to immediately recognize that she is a spellcaster, probably of nature-based magic, which in turn allows the viewer to immediately know that SHE is taunter (of course, one could always look for the source of the spell, which happens to be her hand, but it is almost hidden since it was placed right between three faces).
Also, a big attention-grabber for me was the look on the barkeeps face. He seems very disturbed/frightened, and since his face happens to be directly above the spell, it helped draw the attention there for me.

This pic is great on the details, and it is fun to see this scene - the adventurers in a more relaxed surrounding, and you can easily see the different characters' personalities shining through. I can almost imagine them talking.
Fantastic piece, one of your best in my opinion!

OH my Gosh that sqord is incredible. I love the enchantment coming off it. Makes the world so much deeper al lthe little details you put it. This could almost be a funny antecdote if the drow wasn't so peeved haha.

Oh man this is good! Awesomely good!! And thanks for such a great description!!
There is so much detail here & movement & colour, I could look at it for hours! They better watch out, that Drow might get P'd off!! I love the detail in jis clothing & gear & the robes/gown on the elf are absolutely mind blowing, the depiction of the spell also!! And you cannot help loving the guy with the mug!! I love this!
I love a lot of the artwork for the new system but sadly find the system itself sucks!! I am an old diehard from the TSR era & don't like what Wizards did with the system.
The one consolation is that they have master artists like yourself!
Bravo!!

I love how there's clearly a deeper story going on here.
Is the Dark Elf fleeing from the Beholder in the memory?
No wonder he doesn't like being reminded of it!
