In the story its a musical note with angel wings. Whenever she sings, she can impose her will and emotions into living things around her. Sometimes she can pacify them, sometimes she can cause them to go into insane uncontrollable anger. Its why she was chosen for ghost training. Here she is getting ready to kill the mare that stole her boyfriend, and possibly her boyfriend as well.

Ghost are psychic government agents. They use anything and everything to spy on and kill people. She ran away from her training because didn't want that job. Typically canadiates are chosen from children and have no choice. Twilight recruited her, and she eventually escaped. It's in the story.
