Description Cryptodiles are a fairly primitive group of terrestrial tetragnathes found exclusively on the Northern continent. They belong to a larger group of tetragnathes that can be compared to Earth's lizards; animals with mostly generalistic traits, equal-looking front and middle legs and often elongate bodies. Cryptodiles themselves are fairly large, camouflaged forest-dwellers that feed on smaller animals of all kinds and softer plants. Slightly longer claws on the front legs are fairly common and used to dig out food or burrows. The one species living in open terrain will carry its front legs folded under its chest when running, a trait reminding of the extinct predatory species that used its front legs similar to a praying mantis. Modern cryptodiles fill a similar niche in the Northern continent like the Western continent's tuskhogs.

Strange comparison, but in a way comprehensible, as both are short-legged and sausage-shaped.

They use their tongues as reproductive organs? How, exactly?

In tetragnathes the reproductive organs open into the mouth and the extendable part that was first only used for mating got a secondary function as a tongue. It has two openings located at the tip or underside, depending on species.

Like the pseudo-vertebrates from Snaiad?

In a way, yes. Only the pseudo-vertebrates developed secondary jaws on their genitalia while tetragnathes share the mouth for digestion and reproduction, like many Earth creatures do with their hind end.

So they reproduce by kissing? Cute. Where's the rest of the reproductive system? In the neck? Chest?

Ramul In reply to indigomagpie [2010-03-13 10:04:18 +0000 UTC]

In some way, yes, but it doesn't really look like kissing.
The position of the reproductive system is different in different groups, depending on their size and the form of their necks; inside the neck, or chest or extending through both.

A larger amount of legs would actually reduce the speed and increase the traction, which is very useful for walking on insecure ground, towing objects or having a good stand, but not for fast running. The fast runners usually reduce their middle legs and use them for other purposes, sometimes their front legs as well, one case lost the front and hind legs and walks only on the middle legs.

You study biology?
The thing with dinosaur size was that they had often hollow bones as well, most likely combined with air-sacs like found in birds, so they were far lighter than they look. Another thing is that vivipary limits the size of mammals, because their reproduction rate is very low.
