Description
Full View for tutorialBasically I decided to make a tutorial for who got me photoshop CS2! Thank you SO MUCH. But you don't need that program to use this tutorial. Really, it can be used in any program from photoshop 5-CS2. You can easily adapt it to other programs too if you need it. Anyway, I hope you find this useful. I didn't want to give away the final picture completely, which will be posted soon
Enjoy
EDIT: I forgot to give it to you

Once again, great tutorial! (It's amazing that a smiple sketch can turn into such a great picture!)

You truly inspire me. I have admired your shading from the moment I first found your work... when I switched from anime to more realism, I suddenly discovered that you had as well... and I have always referred to your gallery when searching for inspiration.
This piece, however? It inspired me so much that I "hybernated", as my dad put it, in my room for two days to finish a digital painting. It's far from perfect, and I will probably touch it up tons as time goes by, but for now, I am so proud of it, I can't see straight. Why? Because for the first time, I had a guide on how to do lips, skin shading, hair... things I just guessed at before.
So thank you for being my constant inspiration You do wonderful work!!

Ah, hi. I'm working with Photoshop 5 (LE) and I'm trying to find how to lock the transparent pixels and color the lines black (yes I'm that pitiful xD). I just don't know what to do in 5.0 since I can't find anything like the lock tool you have on the screen shot o.o. Help?

That's easy, I used to use Photoshop 5 a lot. It's on your 'layers' menu, above the list of layers. It looks like a little box with grey and white squares in it, if you click on it while you have the layer you want to lock the transparency of selected then you can go over your lineart easily - pretty easy to find but let me know if finding it is still a problem for yah ^_^

I can't find it ;-;. It's the little box thing that I just can't seem to find >.>... that pesky little box. I know where the layer menu thing is but there's not anything really there (maybe it's just something with this Limited Edition version thing >.> ). I don't know if seeing a screen shot would help but x.x agh. Do you think it might? Thanks so much for trying to help out ^^ it's nice of you! Could you maybe send me a note if you think the screen shot thing might help?
Thanks so much again ;-;!

Thanks for making this tutorial... I'll bet this is extremely repetitive but about 400 other people and myself kinda needed this. I've had Pro Paint for a whole year and I've barely used it because I still to this day have problems working with it. (Thus explaining only one deviation on my account >< And you made a great picture... I used to think the original picture had to be pretty much perfect for it to come out right... and it couldn't have any sketchy lines. You showed me that it doesn't necessarily have to look perfect at the beginning when you scan it into your computer and start coloring... it just matters what the end product looks like. So gracias... and Im lookin forward to see what the entire picture looks like in the end.

This is wonderful, however, I have a question... I like to sketch with a pencil on paper instead of digitally, it just gives me a better overview of what I'm doing. So... how do I get the sketch to seperate from the white background in that case?

deguchan In reply to JacquesMoineau [2005-08-15 18:39:38 +0000 UTC]
umm. . . kinda butting in here but do you still need an answer to that question?
If you have photoshop then you separate the lines onto its own layer, then you set the layer blending options to multiply. That way the white should be made transparent and when you paint on any layer under the lineart's layer, only the pencil lines (should) show up over the coloring. After that, just follow this tutorial normally.
yah. I hope that helps.

Ah, thanks Though I still wonder about, well... If you have photoshop then you separate the lines onto its own layer ...how? Eh...

deguchan In reply to JacquesMoineau [2005-08-17 00:56:13 +0000 UTC]
Eh? Oh. Badly worded, sorry. Not too good at explaining i guess... I just meant that the lines should have its own layer, and not be on the background layer ( as it usually is when you open the document after scanning) otherwise, it's really hard later on to insert layers under the background layer. . . and doing this step now saves hassle later on. For me, anyway.
If the lineart is on the background layer, then just copy the background layer, create a new layer, and then paste. That's all.
Yeah. I hope that's clearer to you. Glad it helped!
