it would, but normal wax would work just as well; since the leather isn't hot enough to melt it, plus it's better for people who are on a budget . but yeah a harder wax would certainly be better

The leather itself isn't hot, but keep in mind that you're using a hot air hairdryer on it.

great tutorial! how tough would a batman cowl be?

Ranasp In reply to yowzaaman [2012-11-25 05:51:24 +0000 UTC]

Fairly difficult, since you'd be encasing the entire head you'd need to use more than one piece of leather, which means stitching it together as well as shaping it. Then there's the whole putting it on/off, you'd basically need to use a luchador style hood.

Do you know how to mold the mask without getting that fold between the eyebrows?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ranasp In reply to Irako-of-the-Desert [2012-11-25 05:52:49 +0000 UTC]

You're either going to get the fold, or a raised ridge running vertically if you want the mask to be molded to the wearer's face. If you kept it completely flat with no "wrinkle", it would be lifted off your face.

Thankyou. I have always wanted to try this. I am having a hard time finding where to buy the leather. Where do you get yours or do you know where I could order it online? Thanks

Ranasp In reply to mesoprettyone [2012-11-25 05:54:37 +0000 UTC]

Best way to get leather in your region is to google "vegetable tanned leather (where you live)", any local stores like the leather factory should show up. You can also find veg. tanned leather on ebay sometimes. Just be careful it's the right thickness and that it's not old.

kndust In reply to mesoprettyone [2012-09-19 06:33:13 +0000 UTC]

you can go to Tandy Leather dot com or any number of other leather suppliers for all the items and some craft stores for head mold forms

very helpful! I'm curious how I would attach two piece of leather together? What tool would I use to put the pieces together and appear seamless?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ranasp In reply to TheLARPGirl [2012-11-25 05:57:20 +0000 UTC]

You'll have a seam no matter what method you use, the best you can do is to disguise it. Your choices are to glue it (won't last, especially if you are hard on it. Or worse yet it will damage the leather if it's the wrong type of glue) or to stitch it, which will hold it the best, but will either have seams that show, or make a ridge on the folded side.

Awesome...I always thought there was some sort of stiffener on the leather. Way cool that it just has to be vegetable-tanned! Thanks so much for sharing!

Poke-puzzlemaster In reply to ??? [2012-01-27 22:03:54 +0000 UTC]

Thats super helpful, thank you! Is it possible to do the same with fake leather? Or can the "effect" and "bendy-ness" only come from using thereal stuff?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ranasp In reply to Poke-puzzlemaster [2012-02-05 16:01:02 +0000 UTC]

Ah, fake leather and any other type of leather except vegetable tanned don't have the properties that allow it to "cure" into position. Basically they'll just flop around like a piece of fabric no matter how much you wet and apply heat...Except possibly in the case of faux leather, which might melt. :/

Well I am going to try this today on a Mempo (Japanese Samuri Half Mask) for my fiance this afternoon. This tutorial Makes it seem like I might be able to work this all out. I will post it and a link if I don't give up and cry first. Wish me luck.

By the way GREAT TUTORIAL, very easy to follow and great pictures.

Ranasp In reply to Aleera-Keeya [2012-02-05 16:02:29 +0000 UTC]

I hope it worked out for you! Remember, you can always practice with a tiny version of it first. That way you figure out how to maneuver the leather without using up a ton, plus you get a cool mini mask.

I love your tutorial and I plan on following this when I make a mask!

I'm curious. I'm looking online for the leather and I found "Natural Veg Tan Leather Cowhide Split Piece". Is this the correct leather or am I looking at the wrong type of veg tan leather?

Thanks!

I'm sure this has been asked many times, but I will ask it again, where do you purchase such a leather?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

underthemaples In reply to Limbsart [2012-06-18 21:29:47 +0000 UTC]

Tandy leather, or ebay - and you want 4 to 6 oz. weight - smaller would be too thin, and heavier would work, but make it more time consuming to dry and retain the shape.
