Very nice tutorial. I'm going to have to give this a try for some masks I've been wanting lately. Do you ever make masks out of non-vegetable tanned leather?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Ranasp In reply to new-black-wings [2010-10-16 02:47:53 +0000 UTC]

I haven't, mostly because non-vegetable tanned leather would not hold it's shape. It'd be similar to taking a thick cloth, cutting holes in it, and strapping it to your face. In certain cases it could work, (like simple domino masks) but for the most part it's just not suitable. Plus the other types of leathers typically come pre-dyed.

Question, would this method work with making something a little more complex? such as a full plague doctor mask? meaning if i wanted to put lenses into the masks eyes would i have to attach them before or after its dry and molded?

But fantastic tutorial owo i will most definetly give it a shot

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Ranasp In reply to fictions-reality [2010-10-16 02:49:33 +0000 UTC]

I would use the lenses while in the process of drying the leather to make them fit the best. Leather shrinks when drying, but you can stretch it around the glass for the best fit. I'd do an online search for tutes on making plague doctor masks, just so you can get a general mockup.

kool, this is much better than making a mask out of clay (for me at least).
one question, does the leather change colors when it is heated and does it come in different colors (i just need a white mask)? ok maybe that was 2 questions...

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Ranasp In reply to Silent-psycho10 [2010-09-27 19:37:57 +0000 UTC]

For your first question, take a look at step 22.

For your second, usually any colored leather isn't vegetable tanned, or it's already been treated. You can get white dye (which DOES tend to be toxic, so be careful) or just use acrylic white paint.

Silent-psycho10 In reply to Ranasp [2010-09-27 22:28:24 +0000 UTC]

ok thank you. i'll probably go with the paint, easier for me. and thanks for the warning!

How much does vegetable tanned leather cost?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 2

Ranasp In reply to ShamelessMagic [2010-09-27 19:40:21 +0000 UTC]

Prices vary wildly depending on the quality of the leather, the thickness, where you're buying it from and if it's readily available in your location (as opposed to having it shipped in). If you look through the responses, you can see some listings of online sites that sell leather, and can compare prices that way.

Hi there, veg tanned leather generally runs anywhere from about 2.50 on the low end to as much as 9.99...per square foot! Tandy Leather is about the best distributor around, so Google them there is probably one in your state If your patient, Tandy often has sales on leather, with even better deals on "remnants" or pieces of larger hides. hope it helps!

Very nice tutorial. I was suddenly smitten with mask cravings at the last ren faire I went to, and it was wonderful to find such a clear description of how they are made

I found little sheets of leather at Michael's today in varying widths. I know you used considerably higher quality leather, but do you think the cheapo stuff I found would work too? I noticed both sides of the leather I found were fuzzy, if that impacts it at all. I didn't know the exact thickness you like when I saw them.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Ranasp In reply to TheRootOfAllEvil [2010-09-27 19:41:26 +0000 UTC]

Check what kind of leather you found there, I suspect what you've found is actually SUEDE leather as opposed to vegetable tanned. Suede is very soft and won't hold it's shape, much like a piece of fabric.

Thank you for posting this. I didn't realize it was such a simple procedure. I was looking at $200 for a custom mask and veil combo for my wedding. And I'm a seamstress, so I think I may be able to make it. Really. Thank you. This will be a huge money saver. <3

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Ranasp In reply to KamikazeKokoro [2010-03-17 05:53:18 +0000 UTC]

You can stitch the veil directly onto the leather, just be sure to punch holes ahead of time with an awl, or leather working needles. (they have diamond shaped heads so they punch through the leather without bending)

KamikazeKokoro In reply to Ranasp [2010-03-29 03:26:11 +0000 UTC]

Oh, yeah. I sew with leather frequently. I just wasn't aware that if was so easy to mold. Is there any particular type of leather that works better than others???

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Ranasp In reply to KamikazeKokoro [2010-05-02 14:23:03 +0000 UTC]

Better quality looks and stays supple longer, but there's no real "name brands" that I can think of.

nice tutorial! didn't know it really was that easy ^^
now i only need to find some suitable leather....

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Ranasp In reply to ThundersSilence [2010-03-06 01:46:57 +0000 UTC]

That does tend to be the tricky part. Too thin, and it has problems holding it's shape. Too thick, and good luck mushing it INTO a shape. Too old then it's brittle and dry. That's why ordering off ebay can be problematic.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

ThundersSilence In reply to Ranasp [2010-03-06 21:23:42 +0000 UTC]

well, i'm not a fan of ebay in any case. will rather try getting it from or with the help of a shoemaker.

Surprisingly so! But as with many things of that sort, the doing is easy, the perfecting is difficult.
