well according to the movie (didn't read the comics or wikipedia) it came from some meteor or something. it needs a host (as in, human) to survive. once it touches human flesh, you turn into, well, that.

I believe the original version of the story was that Peter got it while he was at some place called "War World" and he might have been with the Fantastic 4. He ordered a 'suit' from some machine and got it as a little sphere, which enveloped him, gave him the augmented abilities and so on.
In the "Amazing Spider-man" animated series, and I think the updated comics, the Venom symbiote hitchhiked on the hull of a space shuttle that had J. Jonah Jameson's son on board. In the movie it just came via meteorite.
In the "Ultimate Spider-man" comics, the Venom symbiote is actually an organic suit originally designed to be a cure for cancer and other illnesses. However, it took on a life of its own, eating away at its host, making them go nuts and have to consume other living things(animals people) in order to sustain itself and the host.
This isn't verbatim, it's just a summary what I remember from what I've read and watched.

You could've made him with his mouth wide open, to describe his pain. But overall it's awesome, really awesome. The symbiote is one of the most genius ideas in the comics.

This is really awesome looking. I love the strained muscles in the neck, and you did a really good job of making the symbiote seem sentient.
I also like his hands reaching up towards his face too. I think you could have done a little better of a job with his facial expression. He seems somewhat resigned to his fate, being as his mouth is half-closed, unless he's just starting to scream?
Still, it looks great, and you have a wonderful use of color on here. Great job!
