The cold moon loomed brightly in the night sky, hazy with dust, and smoke.
Broken, torn, the stretch of bare ground lay silent in the darkness...No Man's Land some called it.
A death trap, sprewn with the bodies of those caught in it, man and beast alike.

Yet he was not paying attention to it right now, but stood frozen, staring up at the lone tree that by some miracle survived the explosions of the artillery raining down daily...

...caught in it's mangled branches, was something...thrown up by the last bombardment.

It was hard to tell what it was, from this distance...a cow, a mule, -a horse...it was too dark to see.

But drifting on the cold breeze, was a whisper...
