Description
PHOENIX WRIGHT: ATTORNEY TRILOGY.Developed and Published by: Capcom.
Genre: Visual Novel.
Rated: 18 (scenes of death, violence, and unsettling imagery).
Capcom is known for some of the best franchises in gaming history; ranging from the likes of Mega Man, Street Fighter, Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, and of course Devil May Cry. Phoenix Wright remains one of their more unique offerings for it's memorable characters, captivating storytelling and rather goofy sense of humour. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy is a revamped collection of the original 3 titles in the series - Ace Attonery, Justice For All, and Trials & Tribulations.
If you're new to the series then the best way to describe the games is like reading an intereactive book, mixed with elements of point & click adventure titles. Each chapter of the game works in a basic fashion; You're tasked with finding your cilent innocent of the trial of murder by looking for clues, talking to witnesses and bringing this to a conclusion in the court room. An interesting idea of the first few trials is they practically tell you who the killer really is and it's sort of a challenge to the player to find them guilty.
It's when the games remove that information and leave the killer's identity a mystery is when the game becomes very compelling. There's this almost Film Noir approach to things as you try to form a case of who did it. The twists and turns really add to the suspense on that first playthrough, which is sadly lost upon revists to the game upon completion. Thankfully replaying the games is all the more enjoyable due to the games fantastic writing, brilliant characters, and the soundtrack. Everything from pretentious "Ace Detectives" to a very effeminate French chef, they're all larger than life personalities that its always a joy when they reappear in later trials or courtroom battles.
While the games themselves are fantastic, the collection is seriously lacking in other factors. Maybe it's because I was spoiled rotten by Mega Man X Legacy Collection but with this you get the three games and that's it. No trailers, no artwork, no music, and not even an episode from the recently released Anime series. The new art presentation has upgraded the sprites for a more "flash game" artstyle that I'm not sure I like all that much. I mean it does the job and isn't exactly a bad thing, but I'm just too nostalgic for the oldschool sprites. It really says something when you see the same old sprites over the span of 14 trials and not be sick of them.
If you're an Ace Attorney vetran, you may not have a reason to seek this collection out. But if you're new to the series and want something to fill a weekend, this might be a collection to help pass that time. The lack of additional content is a downer but thankfully the games themselves more than make up for that disappointment.
