Season 2..... Oh boy.

By this point, I had readjusted to the show and it felt less cringeworthy to sit through. I found myself pausing less to take a break and began to steamroll through episodes at a much quicker pace! The season took on more darker themes and really was a challenge for the heroes to overcome. One thing I began to notice was the school aspect was slowly being toned down and the Ranger aspect took more of a center stage. Adding to that was all new footage shot souly by Saban and the reliance of Zyu2 footage discreased in places. If Season 1 was all about beginings then Season 2 would be all about CHANGE. A lot of things changed over the course of Season 2, in that it sort to shake up everything season 1 established and reset the rules for better or for worse. Let's begin with one of the most impactful changes.

Lord Zedd.

The big problem with Rita Repulsa was.... She was a complete joke. She really fell into a predictable formula and the limited Zyuranger footage of her was really starting to wear thin. Her voice never matched in time with her lips and she relied on the same 2-3 catchphrases all the time that I began to question that "Empress of evil" title she gave herself. Being souly an American creation, Lord Zedd could effectively do more than Rita and they could shoot brand new footage with the character. I like to think his mask like face was their way of dodging any more critiques of "the voice doesn't match in time with the lips" they got with Rita. Out of the two them, Lord Zedd LOOKED like an Emperor of Evil, like this guy just came from Hell itself and was always fasinating to me as a kid.

Whenever people told me Power Rangers was too kiddy, I'd show them a picture of Lord Zedd and that shut them up. The downside is Goldar was demoted from Epic Troll, to asskissing yes man. Yet here is what bugs me about the opening arc "The Mutiny." If they had the Rita Repulsa costume this whole time, why not use it more often in Season 1 instead of relying on stock footage of Bandora?

Sticking with the theme of being a troll. I seriously adore Lord Zedd. Yes he got more comical as time went on, but the complete "I don't give a fuck!" attitude when dealing with the Rangers always amused me. Talking down to his underlings and the smug nature of him was a sight to behold. While they were the most entertaining aspect of the show, I think it was safe to say Bulk & Skull's chief gimmick had ran it's course and it was time for a change. Their whole gimmick of Season 2 was them trying to find out who the Rangers were. Yet when being rescued by them in Episode 1 it never accurs to them this train of thought.

Bulk: Hey, that red guy sounds like Jason.
Skull: What, that geek at school who is always wearing Red and knows martial arts...... (MINDS BLOWN)

Geez, even The Riddler could figure this out.

I love how melodramatic the Rangers get when they lose their Zords. Take away their toys and suddenly "THAT'S IT!! WE'RE DONE!!! GAME OVER MAN!!!" and Zordon has to tell them "...Urgh, fine. Here's some new toys!" I mean, what these Rangers really need is this kinda pep talk.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=LstIgt…

Its important to not have your heroes on a continious winning streak and a loss helps them grow! That being said, I'm starting to understand that emo joke in Kirbopher's Super Freaking Parody Rangers video now. Speaking of toys, the introduction of the Thunder Megazord began to present quite an obvious problem with the show. It was now comprised of 4 different video sources. It has the American footage of the teens and Lord Zedd, the original scraps of Zyuranger footage, the last bits of Zyu2 footage and now footage from Gosei Sentai Dairanger. This is becoming quite a mishmash of sources glued together. Which would become 6 different sources when you consider they began to use Ninja Sentai Kakuranger and Kamen Rider Black RX in Season 3.

The third major change came from when Tommy stopped wearing Green.... And started wearing White.

The White Ranger was from Dairanger and was just similair enough to the Zyuranger costumes so he didn't stick out too much. This way, Tommy would stick around for longer and the Tigerzord could finally be used alongside the Thunder Megazord. I never got how he was suddenly promoted to "Leader of the team!" but that may have something to do with what we'll talk about in a second. It sadly meant the end of the beloved Dragonzord, but sometimes you just gotta say goodbye to things you care about.

And speaking of saying goodbye. Season 2 saw the end of Jason, Trini and Zack.

There have been verying sources claiming a different story on why they left. But I think it's pretty unanimous now that it was a pay dispute. Austin St. John, Thui Trang and Walter Jones wanted more money, I believe Austin was quoted of saying "I can make the same amount of cash working at McDonalds!" and Saban basically said "Go fuck yourselves!" and promptly fired them. This presented quite the challenge, for they couldn't just write the 3 out without so much as a goodbye but the actors had already left the series long before their replacements even appeared. Tommy's sudden promotion from 6th Ranger to Leader may be in relation to this. When you consider Jason's nonchalant reaction to suddenly being demoted. The original scene, I suspect, was Zordon asking "Are you pleased with the newest member of the team?" instead of what we heard in the finished product "Are you pleased with the newest leader of the team?"

The in costumes scenes was pretty easy to solve. For ANYONE could be in the suits and no one would know the difference. So they had 3 stunt doubles with pretty awful sound alikes filling in for the Ranger fights. In the American footage, the three were either "doing a recreational activity off camera!" seen from behind or from a distance... Or stock footage of earlier episodes were used. Even using the same shot of Trini twice in the span of a minute.

That's right. A show notorious for using stock footage, was now using stock footage of itself. In other words. Power Rangers was literally this joke from The Simpsons.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=U58IdB…

Thankfully this issue was resolved with the arrival of 3 new characters. Enter Rocky, Adam and Aisha. Three new teenagers in town who are pretty skilled in martial arts and dress in Red, Black and Yellow respectively.

Wow. They weren't even subtle about it were they?

They retrieved "The Sword from the planet Plot Device" to give the new heroes Jason, Trini and Zack's powers. Funny how we'll never need this sword again in the future. That's mainly due to the show's continuity errors and contradictions in the story. You'd think they'd have prepared something on the off chance one of their actors left the show or had to leave due to medical reasons. Granted by Lost Galaxy, they handled Kendrix's departer well (due to the actress having leukemia) even if I wouldn't have let the character die.... Then she came back from the dead and.... Can we move on from this please beacause this is getting too weird to justify.

So our three new heroes. Rocky feels like a mixture of both Jason and Zack. He has Jason's martial arts mixed in with Zack's humour and occasional clumsyness. For me personally, he did feel like a major downgrade from Jason. Jason was this natural born leader and badass, while Rocky felt more of a comical sidekick which was further cemented when Tommy took over.

Adam was "kind of there!" to begin with, but he did have some pretty goofy moments and would go on to be major legacy character. Probably making the most reappearences along side Tommy. And yes it would be foolish not to mention this but Adam's actor, Johnny Young Bosch, would go onto being involved in Anime voice work. Yet I think Power Rangers is what I'll always remember this guy for.

Aisha was leaps and bounds above Trini. She had a very likeable personality, incredibly sassy and very abrassive. I like Trini, don't get me wrong, but she cannot hold a candle to Aisha as a character. That may have something to do with Karen Ashley's overall performance in general. I did include the extra episode of "Where there's smoke, there's fire" because it was my first introduction to the three new teens. It won't be featured in the summary but I felt like watching it for my own amusement.

Eventually we got one final change to the overall formula. See, Lord Zedd was too good at being a super villain that parents began to complain about his design saying "He's too scary for children!" so he began to change as a character. Basically going from the Lord of Darkness to something on par with say Ceaser Romero's Joker in the 60's Batman series. He became sillier, telling more jokes and losing that frightening edge he once had. Which was a shame for it really tarnished the character which made him officially gimped by Season 3.

To complete this unnecessary transformation, Rita returned to the series and the two were married.... Because reasons.

Some have made the argument that this made Zedd more effective in ultimately defeating the Rangers and I can understand that argument. However I feel having a Emperor of evil arguing with his wife made the character too human. In that you could picture these two on holiday, bickering about which direction the hotel is or saying things like "MY MOTHER WARNED ME ABOUT YOU!" or "I NEVER SHOULD HAVE MARRIED YOU!!!" which really detracted from their overall evil nature.

I don't want to see my villains bickering like an old married couple, I want to see them plotting how to murder 6 enviromentally conscious teenagers in spandex. This is something future series did better. Granted they had similair themes like family but it was handled better due to improved writing than saying "FUCK IT, LET'S MARRY THEM!"

Regardless if these changes made the show better or worse, it was a ratings winner and things kept on getting bigger. Mind you, it could be argued that Season 3 was the beginning of the end......

Season 2. (16 episodes)

Part 2: "If Zedd was really hardcore, he'd just kill them already!"

Green no more 1/2: "And Tommy was NEEEEEVER seen again... Sarcasm!"

The Ninja Encounter 1/3:"Why pay your actors well, when you can REPLACE THEM!"
Power Transfer 1/2:"They'll contradict this in Season 3. Just you wait!"

Yes. I decided to do the movie instead of the 3 part "Ninja Quest" story for I'd basically be repeating myself. After the movie we'll go into Season 3.

If the marriage was odd than just wait for the skeleton brother in law, Rito. There was also dragon ship Zed had called the Serpentera, but it was is a pain to recharge.

I did think about adding Serpentera.... But his batteries died before he could make it into the page.

I may add him in an update.
