"Hi, Rainy!"
Rainy's heart flip-flopped as she turned around. She saw Cindi smiling with her head tilted.
"Go away!" Rainy growled, her teeth bared.
Cindi's ears flattened against her head as her expression saddened.
"O-okay," she murmured. She began to slowly walk backwards, then turned and walked away. As soon as she was out of Rainy's view, Cindi ran into the forest, tears flying behind her. She weaved in between trees and over broken branches. Her muscles burned, but she pushed on. Her head began to ache, and her vision was blurred with tears. She ran past a tree, but didn't see the tree root poking out. She tripped over it and landed hard onto her side. She lay still, not trying to even get up. Dirt was splattered onto her pelt. Her breath began to even and tears blocked the vision from her nearly closed eyes.
"Why don't you like me?" Cindi whispered. "Why do you reject me and treat me like this?"
Rainy's head hung down. She could feel her heart sink. She didn't understand. She didn't like Cindi. She walked away. She sat down next to a puddle. Then, her thoughts crashed in.
Why do I feel like this? she thought. I don't even like Cindi!
But her heart burned and other subconscious thoughts entered her head.
Why, why, WHY?
Rainy flung her head in frustration. Then, she found her self facing the little puddle. She face grew surprised. She noticed her right eye. It was turquoise. The same exact shade as Cindi's. Rainy's heart softened. She realized something. Deep down inside, she had feelings for Cindi. She didn't know because she blocked it harshly from herself. But she liked Cindi. Not as just a friend.
She looked behind her where Cindi had left. She started toward her trail and into the deep forest. Light barely could filter through the dense growth. She sniffed at the air and followed Cindi's scent. She then saw her body laying limply on the floor.
"Cindi?" she asked. There was no reply. Rainy started to worry. She ran up to her and then, relived, saw her body rise and fall.
"Cindi?"
Cindi slowly raised her head up to her, her eyes part way closed. Her face was stained wet.
"I'm sorry," Rainy said. "For everything."
Cindi's eyes opened.
"Please, forgive me."
Cindi half smiled.
"I do."
