Description Gordon the big blue engine has live on the island of Sodor for many, many years. He loves his work, and always works hard, but that doesn’t mean he’s perfect at his job…

One night, Edward the blue engine trundle into Tidmouth sheds, he was very tired and warn out for the long days work.

Gordon sniffed, “late again, Edward?” He puffed. Edward spoke, “well I’m not getting any younger, it’s only a matter of time.” Gordon sniffed, “not for me, I’ll always be strong and fast and really useful.” James laughed, “I’m not so sure about that.” “And why is that?” Gordon asked. “Because we’ll all get old and tired eventually, you’re no different!” Informed the splendid red engine. Gordon blew steam at James, and told him to be quiet, but as he backed into the sheds to rest his wheels, James’ words lingered in the back of his mind…

The next morning, It took a long time to get Gordon to start up. “Your boiler is barely producing enough steam, old boy” sighed his driver. Gordon was cross, “your not trying hard enough, I have an express to run and I can’t be late!” He shouted.

As the afternoon came, Gordon was still not ready. Eventually, Henry was the one to take the express. James laughed, “I thought you said you wouldn’t be worn?” He laughed, “your boiler seems to disagree.” Gordon snorted, “my boiler is just fine, everyone has there off days, maybe you should do your work instead of slouching around the sheds and insulting other engines!” He muttered, but James just smiled smugly.

That night, Gordon felt miserable, he’d haven’t done anything all day, and was getting very worried. Emily puffed up beside him, “what’s the matter, Gordon?” She asked, “is your boiler still aching?” Gordon sighed, “what if Edward’s right?” He puffed sadly, “what if I am getting old?” Henry puffed up, “don’t worry Gordon, you can always do my job and pull the kipper.” Gordon wasn’t pleased, “I would never pull a smelly fish train!” “We’ll whatever happens” Emily smiled, “I hope you feel better by tomorrow!”

The next day, after thanking Emily, Gordon went to deliver a goods train. It would normally be degrading for Gordon, but something to do was enough to look really useful.

Gordon clattered along the tracks, his driver checked him has he went along. Gordon traveled up the line, but while he puffed, he saw Toby. Gordon whistled, “this is the mainline! Not the branch line?” Toby replied, “I’m collecting some important fright that need to be delivered to the harbor quickly, I’ve gotten special permission to travel the main line.” Gordon huffed, “they should have asked me to do it” he boasted, “not a old slow coach.” Gordon thundered ahead of the small square engine, but as he did, he came to the big hill. Gordon hated the hill, he hated whenever he got stuck and had to be helped by another engine. Sure enough, Edward was called to help Gordon with his freight. Toby passed by, “ho ho” he laughed, “I thought you said slow, how about we race to to the next station!” He chimed. Gordon really didn’t want to, but didn’t want Toby to get the last laugh.

Gordon finally made it to the top, he saw Toby heading towards the next station. The big blue engine thundered down the hill, he pumped his piston as fast as he could. “Easy old boy” said his driver, “slow down, or else we might-“ he was rudely interrupted by a sharp snap. Gordon had to stop in a siding.

The driver, fireman, and guard inspected the damage. A few minutes passed, they soon found it. “Another safety valve broken” informed his driver.

Soon, James passed by. “A burst safety valve!” He laughed, “whatever will happen to you next, Gordon?” Gordon was cross, if only he could get back at James for teasing him. Edward arrived to haul Gordon to the repair yard. James met Toby up the line, “did you see him?” He asked, “quite pathetic he is.” “Don’t be so smug, James” Toby chuffed, “your no spring chicken yourself.” James weashed, “whatever, if only you understood.” Toby laughed and followed James to see what would happen.

As James roared down the line, he felt very pleased with himself. “Make way for me!” He singed. Things looks up for James, until he started to slow down, he came to a craw, as the driver tried desperately to get him moving again.

Toby jingled his bell from behind. Jame was rather embarrassed. James needed to be fitted with boiler, his old was very dirty and very rusted.

Toby dragged James to the works, where he met up with Gordon. “I’m sorry for thinking your old” James puffed sadly. Gordon apologized as well and both agreed you shouldn’t mess with an old, yet really useful engine…
