Actually 3rd gen has the 3.4 L 5VZ-FE V6 which is quite good, it's the 2nd gen that got the 3.0 L 3VZ-E.

3rd gen 90-95 had the 3.0

84-89 is the 1st gen with the indestructable 22R.

89-95 is the 2nd gen with the slow 3.0 L 3VZ-E.

96-02 is the 3rd gen with 3.4 L 5VZ-FE V6, under powered too, but very reliable. or the 3.0 L 1KZ-TE turbodiesel 4 banger which is not used in US.

To get the power, one needs to go with the 4th gen 4.7 L 2UZ-FE V8.
