Description
I know I'm beating a dead horse, but here's professional shots of Buttocks the Clown along with a more in depth story from Joe Ranft's widow Su Ranft. The following is an excerpt from an email that Su sent me....I got a hand me down sewing machine from my mom when I was 8 years old (cue music). It was a metallic blue Singer sewing machine. It weighed at least 45lbs. When the handle broke off the carrying case, I had to carry it in my arms like a big, square boulder. When I was 33, and had been married to Joe for three years, I told him that if he let me buy a new machine, I would make him anything he wanted. I didn't want anything fancy. Just a simple machine with forward, reverse, zig-zag, basting, and buttonhole features.
When pressed, Joe admitted that he had been wanting his own clown costume for some time. Let me tell you why. Joe was a magician and a juggler. I had learned how to make animal balloons at a part-time job I took when I returned to college to finish a degree in English. Over the years, we had volunteered to do a couple charity functions as a clown act. Recently, a few instructors and students from the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Clown College had been invited to march in the annual “Doo Dah Parade,” and we had been asked to join them. We had an absolute ball. But, once again, Joe had trouble renting a clown costume that would fit his bear-like 6’5 frame. A clown costume that is too tight in the crotch is not funny.
Before we struck a deal, I asked him if he had any special requests. Without missing a beat he said, “Can you make a big butt that sticks way far out in the back?” I told him I could do it, and the deal was struck. this happened in 1988.
Luckily, this happened in November when all the materials available for Halloween costumes in October, go on sale. I bought the biggest clown pattern I could find and then bought yards, and yards, and yards, and yards of loud, colorful material.
First thing that had to be constructed was the giant butt. I carved it out of a large block of foam rubber, reinforced the crevice with duct tape, and covered (upholstered) it with white fabric. Then I attached it to the outside of a sturdy pair of boxers. After slipping the butt on like a pair of shorts, they were held up with heavy duty, elastic suspenders. The suspenders gave the costume just the right amount of bounce.
To make the butt even look bigger, Joe would either shave his head, or wear a scull cap, and top it off with a undersized hat. There was a cowboy hat, a tiny fez, a clown hat and a small fire hat. To finish off the outfit he wore big platform, black-and-white wing tips I brought back from London with me. Let me tell you, when he got the whole thing on and then added the make-up, we are talking one hellava clown statement. Sometimes he would make little kids cry. I think it was just like overdosing on too much visual clowness. Kinda like the Stay Puff Man from Ghostbusters.
That's the story behind Joe and his Clown outfit....
Like I said before the one pictured here will go to John Lasseter as a belated birthday present from Su. Joe and John were very close friends. Su is going to donate one to the Joe Ranft Cal Arts Scholarship Auction coming up in Sept.
I promise I won't post any more shots of Buttocks...the professional shots came out so good, and Su's story was just too cool not to re-post Buttocks...
Hope you enjoy
Special thanks goes to:

My complaints with this:
1. booty game too strong (in a strangely good way)
2. Why isn't he on anaconda with Nicki Minaj
3. Too fabulous

Buttocks is adorable . His face looks very gentle and kind. Thanks for sharing the back story, it adds to the piece to know the history behind it.
And as a person with a large posterior, this is the kind of clown for me .

I think it's all said before... I'm quite sure I've never heard of a clown like him (maybe no wonder, bein on the other side of the world ), before I read you journal.
Although this story "breathes sorrow"(?) (<- I tend to have the same problem as AndreasFrancis), everthing around it tell me that he must have been a majorly funny person.
Is it just me, after reading this story, or is there a sad expression around his eyes?
Absolutely great Job - it looks like he's in the middle of swinging his butt
Have fun - I just had some

Yes he was a very funny person and loved by many...
He was one of John Lasseter's best friends...
The real sadness of the story is the shortness of his life here on earth...
You should read the journal entry on my front page about how John Lasseter reacted when he received it last week...
Thanks so much for the kind words and support...
Take care

I read it. Got curious about what statuette it was talking about and followed the link
Is it the> John Lasseter, film director, co-founder of Pixar and the man who created the Beastie [link] The world is small. There are unexpected connections everywhere.
Have fun! Yay!

And the less time you have. Sometimes I wonder how people even get their stuff done while I, and the end of the day, must admid that got almost nothing done. It seems even worse when being in front of the screen. I read something, think about it, decide about an answer, maybe type a few lines and when I look at the clock, 20 minutes or more are gone during that
But it's still fun. I guess I'm addicted.

Need to repeat because of too much screw-up. I should really get used to use the preview, even though it is not very near to the real view of a post when it is posted:

That is such a wonderful story! It really puts a great perspective on the butt.
I think what absolutely makes this sculpture, is just how shiny and perfect the nose is. That and it really does look like a suit with a butt, without it looking too unreal, you know?
Excellent job! *applauds*

Thank you so much!
The new photos really helped to show all the detail I think....
Yeah, it's hard for me not to get emotionally involved with this project....
The reference shots I used for the clownsuit, and the body postiion etc. is from the dvd that was played at Joe's memorial at Pixar. I've yet to watch it without getting choked up...It's pretty amazing...
Su got Buttocks on Monday morning...She opened it while we were on the phone and she just plain freaked out....She couldn't believe how much it looked like Joe so I was pretty happy....
She ordered 5 more that day. I'm not sure when she'll be able to get it to John Lasseter but she'll let me know....
Thanks again!
Take care

Came out looking great Randy. I'm particularliy impressed with the detailed coloring of his pants. I recon the pants is what "makes" the sculpture. (did I get that English expression right?)

Thanks so much Andreas! Yeah, those pants about drove me insane...
You got the English expression right!
I read your journal too....I clicked on the porn link and got a shock and then realized that you said it was taken....Too funny.
Now my wife will come home and see it on my list of sites I visited today...
Looking forward to seeing what name you come up with for your business...
It's so hard because there are so many millions of protected names...
How about the Motion-nater...Then you could do a little arnold schwarseneger-like terminator character holding the tools of the trade...
Okay, that idea sucked, but there's gotta be some fun possibilities...
Good luck!
take care,
Randy

Oops, I honestly forgot that it would create an actual link adding the "www", but you made the accident sound so funny that I can't help laughing about it. Hehe. They say controversy makes good PR though
Thanks for your name suggestion Randy. Absolutely every suggestion helps, as it makes me think of things I havn't thought about before. SO many names already taken, and my personal name is.. well.. Since leaving Norway I've gotten used to pronounce it using "letter-by-letter"-style. Back home I share family name with a soccer team. Motion-nater was not as bad as suggestion as you think, lots of good jokes to used revolving around the Schwarzenegger-genre.
Glad I got the expression right. I, as most Norwegians, when lacking a english word or expression has a tendency to take a Norwegian word and anglify it. Like the 80's pop group A-ha's song "Take on me" which in Norwegian means "touch me". Or does "take on me" actually make sense in English?
Cheers, Andreas

On the day he died, we raised our beers in the air and toasted to Joe...
