Description Do you know that it's estimated that roughly 40% or more of supposedly "Born Again" Christians don't actually read their own Bibles? Biblical illiteracy is SO HIGH in the United States that even ranking religious leaders are noticing, and worrying.

Well, it would explain how crackpot lies like "The Rapture" (which has no Biblical basis) and "the age of innocence" worm their way into the faith and take root. It also explains why so many people think that Christ was a blond, white bigot possessed of their own hatreds, ignorance, and prejudices.

It's why I shake my head and laugh at the "devout" Fundamentalists who spend all their time beating that same handful of verses over and over and over again, while hypocritically accusing those who disagree with them of "cherry-picking" from the Bible.

What do they think THEY'RE doing when they fixate on the three or four verses condemning sexual immorality (which they twist to mean "GAY BUTTSEX") while out-and-out IGNORING (or grossly warping) the MANY verses attributed directly to Christ saying to love your neighbor, love thy enemy, love those that oppose you, love your neighbor, do unto others as you would have done to you, and have I mentioned love your neighbor?

What do they think THEY'RE doing when they're crying about "God HATES", while flat-out ignoring Christ's words proclaiming that LOVE fulfills all of God's laws?

What do THEY think THEY'RE doing when they're salivating and fixating over the things God "doesn't want", while IGNORING the things EXPECTED of them?

I suppose they have an excuse for their ignorance, though. I mean, it's hard to know what the Bible SAYS, when you never read it yourself, and all you ever hear from your preachers are the hand-picked verses being twisted and used to foster hatred against your fellow man. But that doesn't make it any less pitiful when I know more about the Bible and its contents and messages than anyone who's yet presumed to "debate" me - and I haven't read the book cover-to-cover since I was a Freshman in high school!

Then again, I actually HAVE read the book, unlike that estimated 40-60% of Christians who've never picked up the book (while at the same time proclaiming to be experts on it...)

So, dear Biblically-illiterate Christians: Please cease to be embarrassments to your faith, and actually PICK UP those Bibles of yours, and READ THEM. CAREFULLY. You'll find that you don't know NEARLY as much as you claim.

Truth be told, the bible is incredibly fucking long
When they say the bible is a bunch of books mashed together to make one whole book, they're not fucking kidding
I'm reading it (and the Quran) just to see how fucked up it can get, I'm using both my catholic grandmother's King James version and the NASSB to compare verses but I rarely use the king James version when doing my weekly study, it's taken me around three months to get to Samuel 1 and the fourth sura in the Quran
Of course now "but it takes so long to read" isn't an excuse, but still, give the people a little while to read some of it and then start talking to them about it, they might not even be Christians when you get back to them, what with all the racial genocide, child murder, manslaughter, and other horrible acts that the ancient Israelites did way back when

I'm pretty sure Yeshua Ben Yosef (and I'll say this for the Christians that think he was either a tall "handsome" nord with long light brown flowing locks and pale blue eyes, or the ones that think he was a black African, Yeshua was a Palestinian Jew, he was middle eastern, probably had olive skin, a bushy beard, very short like your average semite at the time, and short black hair with tight curls, and very plain looking, perhaps even ugly, Isiah 53:2 for reference) was little more than an armed rebel against the Roman state, he probably shared similar hatred like modern day Christians

For those who wish to argue he was crucified for preaching blasphemy or whatever horse shit, and I quote, 'Crucifixion was used to punish slavespirates , and enemies of the state.', end of quote, the Romans didn't care about your religious beliefs, but if you were a pirate, rebellious slave, or rebel against the state, you'd be "taken care of"

Also, you pick the 'they don't read their own holy text' to point out that a many of Christians are hypocrites?
How about the ones that eat bacon, crustaceans, or any other non-kosher food
How about the women that, in an ancient Hebrew's mind, dress like whores, the ones that "draw attention to themselves" by wearing expensive clothing or flashy jewelry
The Christians that wear clothing "woven of two different material"
Gossip to one another
Associate with women that are menstruating
Get tattoos
Have premarital sex (a BIG no-no, stone the woman if she is not a virgin and marries, if I remember correctly, I apologize, it's 1:30 AM right now)
And all others I'm too tired to list

Just because you love your neighbor doesn't necessarily mean you have to agree/support their life style.

I used to be a Christian myself, and My pastor actually discouraged people from reading the whole bible! I then read it out of curiosity and am not a Christian anymore.

I personally don't even know why they call themselves Christians, when they have nothing to do with Christ in any way. They qoute out of context verses from the old testament, the only think they ever say that's related to Jesus himself (other than tall tales they made up themselves) is that Jesus confirmed that all of the old testament is 100% true, then go back to quoting the Leviticus (which is a code of conduct for Jewish priests by the way).

I am sick of people falsification the Bible towards homosexuality for there own agenda. Homophobia is caused by a male dominated macho culture.

Reasons that the Bible supports homosexuality:

The New Testament argument against homosexuality is gleaned mostly from Paul's letter to the Corinthians. Paul's disclaimer at the beginning of this letter is that as long as you are a good Christian, the liturgy of laws he states from the Torah do not apply to you.

Jesus himself denied the ethical code laid down by Moses because they were written over 9000 years before Jesus started his ministry and were thus totally out of date almost FOUR THOUSAND FUCKING YEARS AGO!

When a Centurion asked Jesus to heal his gay lover, Jesus called him the most faithful man in Jerusalem. Matthew 8:5-13 & Luke 7:1-10

Has anyone ever noticed just how common place it is to beat down on Christians? To call them wrong, to say they have the Bible Wrong, to say their Ideals, Beliefs, Laws are Warped?

How come you dont hear anything about how, say, Hindus are wrong, or How Dare the Muslims Call Homesexuality Gay!? Or um, How Dare Budhists Tell Me to Not Eat Meat (not sure on that one)

Want to know the reason why? God Is Real. And So Is The Devil. The Devil will do whatever he can to destroy the only Real Faith, Christianity. So Christians are attacked left right and centre. While Muslims, Hindus, Bhudists etc are ussually treated with Respect and Politically Correct wording in the Media and in Common Discussion.

Refute me as much as you like, you only validate my point.

I'm glad I'm not the only who thinks like that. I just think it's unfair how people bash Christianity and yet they don't bash the other religions. Although with Islam it has had it's misrepresentation as a violent religion.

Challenge Accepted.

Actually, I've heard a lot bad not only about Christianity. And since we're on the topic, what BRANCH are you referring to? The catholic church? Church of England? Protestant? Puritan? Perhaps Methodist or Baptist? Believe it or not, the believes vary yet are all named 'Christian'.
E.g. Have you ever seen a priestess in a catholic church? The Protestant one in England allows that. They didn't find a quote in the bible forbidding it, so they didn't think a dogma like so would be needed unlike the roman catholic.
But back onto the subject. We heard all the time also about Islam. I can surely say that Christianity and Islam were and are the two most, how should I put it, restless(?) religions.
You don't hear Taoists or Shintoists or such ever making a fuss.
Before Judaism was highly persecuted, especially in the times of World War two.
At this point you might bring up the 'Martyrs'.
Did you hear the theory that actually, the first Christians provoked the Roman authority into christian persecution by refusing simple and small acts of high respect/worship towards roman constitution, in order to go through 'glorious' death like Jesus?
And Hindus are the ones who aren't allowed to eat beef (meat). Besides you often see also attacks on other religions. Yes in the media aswell.
Do you think that muslim immigrants have it easy after the terrorist attacks? They've been generalized and directly associated with psychopaths. In Europe the general belief is that they beat their women, kill newborn daughters and have their 'own' laws which only protect their religion. I'd be quite offended if someone ignorantly thought without evidence that I'm beaten just because i'm of some religion, which i'm starting to doubt I am.
The fact that you only named four religions in your post, and spelled Buddhists incorrect, i dare doubt whether or not you know what you are talking about.

I opposed your point and didn't validate it.

I'm sorry that you have crazy ridiculous people after you. They say "don't judge us!" but in turn are judging everyone else around them. I don't think you're getting in anyone's way. You are helping realize that if they want to believe a religion, to actually learn it first. People like to take this completely out of control. I personally think people using someone else's ideas to run their lives is a bit ridiculous, but I'm not going to tell other people not to do it. If you want to learn it, learn it thoroughly.

Sorry for the rant. I'm a bigot target and it's a bit frustrating.

Well I read quite a bit of my bible. What is it about the Rapture that you think the bible doesn't allude to? What is your definition of the Rapture...

I consider it the End of Days. When my church and I talk about it, that's what it is. And there is a lot of talk about the end of days all over the bible. Jesus himself speaks about how to tell when the end draws near and what not to see as a sig and what to see as a sign. Revelations describes the end of days in detail.

So maybe I'm a little lost on what you mean by that.

But I have read a majority of my bible. I haven't been a Christian for very long but I am trying to learn about my God the best I can. While I admit I do want to see other Christians read their bibles and try to grow in Christ, I think there is a time and place to confront a person about it. It will be more likely to not draw them away from God if you do so personally and not publically.

No, I don't think they did, either, but they were targeting the Christian religion in general. There actually are actually verses in the Bible that hint at a Rapture of some sort.

To me, when you target one group or branch of a religion, you're targeting it's allies, as well.

TheBlondeSnape [2009-04-25 01:53:53 +0000 UTC]

Most of us do not say God hates anything or anyone. It's merely a stereotype the world (and obviously people that think similar to you) label us with. We are told to hate the sin, love the sinner, and I do that most of the time. I am only saying that to be honest.

And, just to let you know, sexual immortality does mean homosexuality, as well as having sexual intercourse with someone whom you are not married to. The act of sex was made to be between a husband and his wife. But unfortunately, the world today has lost sight of what was intended, including those who have not seen the grace of God and those who have. There aren't just a few verses that prove this, there is an entire chapter. I'm sure you are familiar with the story of Lot and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. I am assuming that you already know what the passage is about, so there is no need for me to type it.

I am asking you to please stop getting in the way of others and their walk with God. Even though I see some people walking away from your ongoing rants with some optimism,I am sure that there are others who turned away in disgust, or perhaps even pitied you,for contemplating such uncomfortable topics and then turning them into something that not only added to the belief that all Christians have to be perfect, little angels who go around calling to God 24/7, but also might have set a giant block in the way of the direction that they were going, which means you could have possibly been responsible for drawing a person away from God.

I wish the best to you and your way in life. Though I find it quite sad that you said you read the entire Bible when you were in ninth grade, but yet it appears to me that you don't actually believe most of it. You probably only read it to degrade Christians and their ways of life. Or maybe because you hated to see hypocrites that claim their Christians, but don't try to fulfill what they are named as. Believe me, I do not like to see that either, but I have never told anyone that they're a bad Christian and need to do more for the Lord. That only makes them angry and/or hurt, which blinds them from God even more. But it seems to me that you like to debate with people about small and large things like this. As do I, and I sometimes go over the edge as well.

Before I go, I have a question to ask you: What do you think Jesus Christ would say to you if he saw what you have been telling people?

"Do not judge, or you will too be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in someone else's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from the other person's eye" Mathew 7:1-5

May God bless you with everything life gives that is pure, not diluted by Satan's honey dripping words that sound pleasant to the average ear.
