Description Mah new take on our beloved meg. Wanted to stay away from the typical giant great white shark portrayal and stick to a body shape that is still somewhat plausible... Let me know what you think :/

Fantastic design. I love the beefed up tail and more snubbed nose. You have managed to make it look plausible while still retaining that good old feeling of power a Meg should display.

Always nice to see people doing something else than just scaling up a great white.

For a moment I thought you had given it eye parasites like in sleeper sharks.

The whales are probably Cetotherium, which were 12 m long.
Currently Carcharocles megalodon is estimated to be 15 - 20 m

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

Mcraelodon In reply to ??? [2018-04-12 23:55:29 +0000 UTC]

not likely
white sharks are an excellent BASE for megalodon but the teeth are different and obviously would be more robust
any lamnid is a good inspiration for colorΒ
lighting is nice and even if its not accurate it still looks like a plausible animal

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Brutonyx In reply to Mcraelodon [2018-04-13 20:12:29 +0000 UTC]

I wouldn't call it inaccurate, after all we just have some teeth of this animal.
Keep in mind that, according to new studies, Megalodon wasn't a species of Carcharodon (like the extant Carcharodon carcharias) but it belonged to another genus, Carcharocles: this means that Megalodon wasn't as closely related with great white sharks as previously thought (it seems that their closest relatives today are actually mako sharks) and the supposed similiarities in dentition between them are just superficial. Also big animals aren't scaled vertions of their smaller closed relatives: their body plan changes according to their size, with some organs becoming bigger and other smaller, for example it's possibile that, like other big sharks like whale sharks today, Megalodon had a big tail fluke and smaller ventral fins to reduce drag.

πŸ‘: 1 ⏩: 1

Mcraelodon In reply to Brutonyx [2018-04-13 20:25:16 +0000 UTC]

i know it isnt a species of carcharodon, we have known it wasnt for a long time
also whale sharks arent a good comparison to megalodon
they have very different bauplansΒ
basking sharks are much closer phylogenetically and in bauplan to megalodon than whale sharksΒ
also the similarities in dentition ARE convergent but the rest of the shark would still look pretty similar megalodon is current placed within the lamnif group along with other otodontids, baking them closer to porbeagles, salmon sharks, makos, and white sharks than to any other living sharks
also the largest sharks alive today are filter feeders and not large raptorial predators which makes them not good comparisons in the first place
either way using any lamnid is a good base for C/O. megalodon
its up in the air if megalodon should be considered otodus instead of carcharocles, even though i am of the stance carcharocles is valid i must acknowledge it is a possibilityΒ Β

Brutonyx In reply to Mcraelodon [2018-04-14 05:32:52 +0000 UTC]

I'm not talking about the ENTIRE bauplan, of course they had different lifestyles and adaptations, but some features, like reduced ventral fins and bigger tale fluke (that are common both in whale sharks and basking sharks) whould be very useful for Megalodon locomotion. Great white shark bauplan works well for their size, but a shark the size of megalodon would have different proportions, for example bigger animals tend to have small eyes. I think this is a good representation of this qbliviens.deviantart.com/art/T…
Phylogeny is useful, but you can't simply put a generic lamniform and oversize it without considering its biology.

πŸ‘: 1 ⏩: 1

Mcraelodon In reply to Brutonyx [2018-04-14 22:33:53 +0000 UTC]

Ok but that's based a study that base does about length on overall robustnessΒ
the snout isn't too shorten even fin they used that stuff studyΒ
large sharks don't have barnacles since there are none that specialize in attaching to large sharksΒ
their dermal denticles prevent a majority of skin parasites that other animals have
Even if they had a bigger tail it should still hen highly lunate, the dorsal fin wouldn't be that small, based onj niche, phylogeny, And Just looking at large sharks today.Β
And the general anatomy of that megalodon Isn't good at all
neck isn't like long and gills a arent big enough since larger animals have larger gills because they require More surface area to gather enough oxygen it looks more like a blimp than an actual shark
also using a general lamniforme bodyplan is good because allow the lamniformes that have arrived at that white shark like shape arrived at it independently because the basal condition of lamniformes Is the sand tiger like being bodyplan
we know this because otodontaspis (smalltooth sand tiger) is more closley related to basking sharks and to megamouths sharks than to carcharias (sand tiger shark) obviously it had smaller eyes
i know my sharks
