Description
Task 2 for Round 11 of OC-training
Draw your OC in their underwear, showing body tyoe and scars, tattoos etc. Also draw four common expressions for the character.
So here we have Beth, poor thing, fallen foul of another prank. I hope someone can help her find her clothes before it's time to go home. (P.E. is Physical Education or Gym Class in the UK).
Just to clarify before the feeling sets, she's not that much of a victim. The pranks aren't as often as it may seem from the first two tasks. It's just I like to provide a plausible reason for all the round's tasks, and this seemed the most obvious for Beth.
Beth is a fuller figured girl, being a size 16 (UK), or a 14/Extra-Large (US) and 44 in Europe. Mostly in the bust and hips. This is another reason she gets singled out.
Her hair has actually been significantly remodelled for OC-Training. Originally it was just a sort of mess with a few curls sticking out but after trying to find good references or guides to drawing curly hair, it turned into tight curls... and generated a new story arc...
Beth's curly, afro hair and darker/smokey skin tones (a work in progress ) are down to her ancestry. Back in the last years of slavery, her great, great grandmother was an Afrikaans slave who gave birth to her English Nobleman owner's illegitemate child. The women of the family have always carried that recessive gene which shows in their curly hair and tan skin colours. This all comes out in a school project on genealogy...
Much to Claire's horror when she realises the English nobleman in question is one of her ancestors!
Beth generally only needs her glasses for reading but tends to forget and leave them on all the time.
The emotions you can see are embarrassment, shock, fear, happiness/satisfaction/awwww, and tiredness. And if you don't thin tiredness is an emotion, think about how you say it... I feel tired
Finally we have the all important explanation to the Guess-Who in task 1;
Everyone realised she was a schoolgirl, and many of you would be aware that I'm British, so she is a Britsh Schoolgirl. It's a state school, not private. Uniforms are still a thing over here, though shirt... sorry blouse and tie are more from my era. Oh and it's not a formal blazer (jacket) its actually a cardigan because Beth is a year older than her classmates and embarrassed about her busty figure, so she tries to camoflauge it.
Beth sometimes gets bullied because of her habit or regularly falling asleep in class and also because she is poor and can't afford designer things. Claire and her henchgirl Tina are the main culprits along with Hannah (not pictured).
In the background you can see Alycia (main protagonist and a magical girl) and her best friend Miku, trying to protect Beth. They aren't close friends intitally but when Beth gets drawn into the troubles of the magical side of the world, they do become good friends.
As with a lot of my things, the devil was in the detail here. In the items on her desk.
The books were reverse psychology They are the subjects she is worst at and needs to revise more.
The pink thing was supposed to be a handkerchief LOL
The letter was adressed to Cancer Research. Beth has a member of close family with cancer. But more on that in a later task.
The phone call was from her mum (buth the white ink didn't show up properly). And the phone was an old model.
The grey box was a Tyre Repair Kit. But not for a bike. Again, more on that one in a later task.
The words magnified by her glasses weren't important, it was the fact they were magnified. She is short sighted.
There was a sewn tear on her cardigan arm. This reinforced that she was poor and couldn't afford a new one, but also that she is able to sew.
The metronome shows that she can play the piano. She's actually rather good but no-one realisdes because she sleeps through the lesson
Lastly the badge said 'Dale Garage' showing Beth works in a petrol station forecourt shop, overnight, as well as school. This is a much bigger deal than in the US as Beth is only 17 and it's illegal to work nights until you are 18 and a legal adult. Most jobs schoolchildren do are of the papergirl kind.
Oh and Beth is 17 when her classmates are all 15 & 16 (Miku is 14 but that's a special case, she's a borderline genius) because Beth had to take a year out of school for... personal reasons.
And that is why Beth falls asleep a lot. She works a full time job on nights, goes to school and has other... commitments too. Again these will become apparent in a later round. She also volunteers for charities sometimes. No wonder she falls asleep a lot...
Beth is a character in my Magical Girl Manga, 'Spirit Hunter Artemis'. You can find out more about her and her friends, and read the manga so far, here;

I know, Claire is such a meanie.
Thank you. It actually looks a lot more complex than it is to draw and colour now I've sort of got the hang of it (famous last words)

It does feel that way at the minute. But in some ways she's above all that. There are more important things.
And as we saw in Guess Who she now has friends around to support her.

Welcome to the fuller-figure club Beth! (I say, because I am a size 14 in US measurements). It's neat how you turn each round into it's own little mini comic.

My wife is the same.
A greater portion of the population is, I think. The fact that the fashion industry is geared towards tiny figures rather than the larger (haha pun) market seems odd and ultimately self-destructive to their profits. What they call Extra-Large seems to be more like average. Plus it's not a very considerate term
That said fashion measurements are imprecise at best. Depending on the retailer, even the particular line, I might be anything from a large to a 3XL.
Glad you like that. I'm not a fan of static images and poses. And a comic, even a single panel one, lets me draw a reason or explanation for the picture into it. I always strive to keep these things in character if I can. It's also fun to draw (literally ) other characters into the scene and expand your world or just tease it a bit

She probably was until the gym teacher came in
Beth is self-conscious about her figure at the best of times. She's a little on the large side and she was an early developer. She was teased by the immature kids for her early and large bust and became quite embarrassed of the whole thing

Aww man, she's going to burn out hard core soon. That or just sleep through everything and not learn much. I hope she finds a better balance. Is she working to support/help support someone else? What got her into playing the piano? Does she have one at home she can practice with? Does she have any other instruments she likes to play or does she like to sing? What got her into the magic shenanigans? (Btw, it probably would still be a big deal in the U.S. It varies from state to state, but there are laws on how many hours minors can work and when they can work them.)

Raqonteur In reply to StoryMaker91 [2019-11-30 17:08:09 +0000 UTC]
Quite possibly
She definitely sleeps through too much of her classes and her grades have suffered because of it.
That's a good guess. She is paying much of her wages into supporting someone. You'll see who in task 4...
I've never really thought about how she got into the piano, I must admit. Possibly there is a one at home but a piano is a big, expensive thing to have just lying around. I wonder where it came from and how she got to learn it in the first place...
(I'll let that one ruminate and get back to you. But my first instinct is it has something to do with one of her parents...)
She doesn't play any other instruments but she is very talented at the piano. She likes to sing but is merely adequate at best. She likes ballads best.
What got her into the magical shenanigans... you'll have to wait for a later task for the full reveal
But Alycia has been a magical girl for a few weeks or months when Beth gets involved. You might consider Beth part of her support staff. She covers for Alycia, she helps out with the craft/homemaker skills she has, and she keeps her eyes open for weird stuff. But she's definitely not a front-line player.
Interesting, most of my assumptions come from watching TV shows LOL, it's a poor substitute for real knowledge but many of them seem to follow the same framework

Wow! She is such a hard worker! I kind of feel bad for her but at the same time I know that trials like that are what shape people into strong, independent, and hard workers. It can really go a long way to build character, so long as the person doesn't grow bitter about their situation and sink into despair. Hopefully Beth won't be one of those people. Here in the US, You can drop out of school as early as 16 (and I think you can even get married younger so long as you have parental consent, which I think is wacky!) and it's fairly commonplace to be held back or jump ahead, particularly in the home/cyber school communities. Lol I think it's funny that she and Claire end up being related
Why does Claire like to pick on her anyway?

She's a hard worker because she doesn't have a lot of choice as you'll see soon. I really don't see Beth as the type to become bitter, she's a genuinely nice, helpful girl which is probably one of the reasons the bullies pick on her.
As an aside, in an alternate future that (probably) never happens now, Beth grows up to be a strong, competent woman. Mother to a young baby, wife to Dean, and part of the remaining resistance against the invading demon spirits which plague the town...
In the UK you used to be able to leave school at 16 but now college is pretty much mandatory until 18. The idea of people being able to get married at that age is... strange. They aren't old/experienced enough to know their own minds and emotions. It sort of plays along the same lines as arranged marriages in other cultures to my mind
It's quite rare to jump ahead or be held back in this country. It tends to be special cases. I never heard of it in my school life. You either pass or fail. But those of particular merit tend to get taken out of the system and specially schooled. That both Beth and Miku are in effectively the wrong year group in the same class is a mark of their circumstances being very different.
It's not something I saw coming. It's really not something that Claire saw coming either And boy is she p*ssed about it. It just sort of happened LOL
Why does Claire pick on Beth? Whay is the sky blue? That said Claire picks on most people. She's at the top of the food chain and never misses a chance to prove it. Beth just makes an easier target than most. She used to pick on Alycia too until Alycia became a magical girl and learned to stand up for herself. Miku is another common target and sometimes Dean too. But Alycia has become a real thorn in Claire's side and usually steps in to stop the bullying.

She's really got such a sweet personality then! I hope she learns not to get taken advantage of as often happens to naturally helpful people.
Invading demon spirits!? Why do they target her town in particular?
Wow, that's so interesting! I never knew that about the UK school systems! Is homeschooling allowed over there at all? Yeah, it weirds me out too about people being allowed to marry that young But, we're the land of freedom so freedom's what we get . . . after filling out lengthy government paperwork anyway.
To answer your rhetorical question, according to spaceplace.nasa.gov, "Sunlight reaches Earth's atmosphere and is scattered in all directions by all the gases and particles in the air. Blue light is scattered more than the other colors because it travels as shorter, smaller waves. This is why we see a blue sky most of the time." (yes, I had to look that up)
Wow! Claire is quite the bully! It's great that Alycia learned to stand up for herself and others! I hope that Beth will also learn to as well even if it might not be in her personality.

Beth is sweet and perhaps even a little naive despite everything. She does want to be helpful and does get taken advantage of. Will she learn? Perhaps. But at what cost?
Why do the demon spirits target her town, I never really gave that much thought, I must admit. It makes sense that there is probably some kind of Nexus or Breach in the barrier between the Spirit World and the material world there. Especially given that Diana, once freed from being transformed into Cerberus, was able to lead Artemis (Alycia) into Hades to save Genevieve's soul (In the opening salvos of Season Two... a long way off yet but described in earlier rounds of OC-T; Genevieve - Round 6, Diana - Round 10).
It's a big world, we all have very little experience of it outside our own countries Homeschooling isn't really a thing but it can be done, as long as they meet educational criteria. It's pretty rare, I've only heard of it on TV but then I live in a small to moderate-sized town of 11,000 pretty much as far from the capital as you can get LOL.
And all paperwork must be completed and filed in triplicate
Funny you should say that. In one of my recent stories, the planet orbited a red dwarf star so the sky was actually red and so was the soil. I haven't worked out what colours other things are with the downshift in the spectrum but I suspect the foliage will be blue or possibly black. I did see a documentary on those kinds of conditions some years ago and like everything else, it got filed away under interesting trivia for use in stories and world-building LOL.
I suppose if I want to get it right I might have to invest in some coloured lenses for experiments.
Yes, Clare is the personification of the school bully. She's on top of the heap and she'll do anything to stay there. It wouldn't occur to her not to. But like all the other characters in the manga, Claire has her own story and learning curve. You'll no doubt see more of her in a later round.
Alycia always had that sense of right and wrong but was held back by fear. Artemis, even though she can't really transform into her to beat Claire up , has finally given her the strength to back up her convictions.
As for Beth, only time will tell. Beth is the oldest of the girls by a year, even Claire. In many ways, she is the most mature, dealing with real-life issues they can't imagine. But she's also surprisingly sheltered and very much alone. Thankfully she doesn't stay alone.

Poor Beth, she really has it tough, doesn't she? :') Hopefully she'll be able to get some rest when needed, preferably outside her classes and not on her job... I'm really glad to know that eventually she'll gain some friends and people who care for her - even if they also do drag her off into Adventures that she may never even have dreamt of.

Raqonteur In reply to MegaMaeve [2019-11-30 16:34:02 +0000 UTC]
She does but I think she's one of those people that don't really realise it and just get one with things.
She does get to rest sometimes, otherwise she'd just collapse. It just doesn't seem like it to her. She's learned to live on four hours or less of sleep. (Working permanent nights, I often do that too. I've come to regard 6-7 hours sleep as a lie in )
Alycia, Miku and the other's are the type of friends who will look out for her. And who couldn't love Genevieve? LOL. But there is a darker side to it though Beth tries to stay out of that. Sometimes it does turn out that she's just the person they need.

I can see why Beth sleeps a lot, the poor girl is overworked, working nights, dealing with personal issues, and going to school!
Having her P.E uniform stolen while she was asleep is pretty cruel. I wonder why Claire is so mean to her and if Beth is the only one she picks on?
I read that Claire is vagely related to her, which is interesting, I wonder how this will effect their dynamic?
You did a great job with her hair texture, the curls look great!

Indeed, poor girl is exhausted as you'll see why when you learn more in later tasks.
Yeah stealing her P.E. kit AND her school uniform was a bit low, especially given how self-conscious Beth is about her figure. It's not just Beth, Claire is mean to just about everyone She used to bully Alycia too before Alycia became a magical girl and learned to stand up for herself. Miku is another sufferer at Claire's hands. But Alycia won't stand for it any more and Claire is learning that the hard way.
That's actually a brand new storyline created by OC-Training. I think it will effect their dynamic but I'm not sure it will be in a good way, especially since it was revealed in front of the whole class...
Thank you. They were scary at first but hopefully, I'm getting used to it now.
Hopefully.

That's gotta suck for Beth... losing her P.E. clothes while she was asleep... (Stella Burlone personally wouldn't go that route...)
Wow... never thought there was a lot of depth in Beth.... her night job along with her personal issues that's causing her to sleep a lot must be cutting into her academic performance...
It's also surprising that she has some sort of African ancestry... from what I'm reading, is Claire vaguely related to her?

Yeah, it's pretty childish as pranks go but Claire is an opportunist. And given Beth is quite shy about her body and likes to cover up, it's double sucky.
Thank you. You should know better by now LOL. Just because she isn't a half-monster, magical girl, or involved with the Knights of the Round Table doesn't mean she doesn't have layers upon layers. This is one of my characters after all
Yes, that surprised me as well LOL. It just came together as I was drawing her for this round. Oh yes, snooty Claire is definitely not pleased about that one. Especially since it was revealed in front of the whole class...
