Description
"That's not what I meant when I said bring home a TV Ariel"Comedy sketch featuring Ariel, Disney's Little Mermaid.
EDIT:
I've replaced the original picture (March 2012)with a new one (December 2013) with (hopefully) much improved art because although I love the concept, I'm not proud of the original art
I'll try and complete a Draw It Again Meme with both versions... if I can get Paint to co-operate.

Hello! I'm also here fromΒ ProjectComment Β and want to leave you a bit of feedback.Β
I think the idea is really nice, the guy coming home with a live Ariel and what I assume to be his girlfriend being less than impressed with the turn of events. It's a sketch that tells a story and especially the girlfriend's facial expression is perfect for the story.Β
As far as the anatomy is concerned, like the others have pointed out, Ariel's arm and her waist are a bit under-developed. Her fish tail also seems a bit long in the 'thighs' region, it looks like the bend at the 'knees' should happen a bit further up. Ariel's hair, on the other hand, is great, just like the guy's. The girlfriend's put-up hair looks like she put it up towards the side, though, like it should be a little less visible to be on the back of her head.Β
The one thing I'm really missing, however, is some interaction between Ariel's gaze and that of the guy. He is looking at her, but her head is tilted down and she seems to be looking at nothing in particular, which gives her the impression of being disengaged with what's going on. That she appears to be blushing disagrees with that, but by her gaze I can't tell what she is blushing about. Because she likes him? Because she's embarrassed that her presence causes trouble? I think if her facial expression was a bit clearer here, if her eyes looked at him or his girlfriend and if the eyebrows were a bit more defined to add towards a specific facial expression, it would boost your sketch several notches up. His expression also seems to be positive but neutral. No bad conscience, no lovey-dovey infatuation with Ariel... giving him a more defined expression would also help.Β
Because the idea is cute, it would really pay off to work on it some more and then add bold outlines and maybe even colour, I think. Β

Hey there! I'm here fromΒ ProjectComment .
The first thing I would like to say (and I don't know if that's a personal opinion or a valid point) is that I wish the lines would look darker or thicker - even thought it's just a sketch done with a pencil, it's possible to edit these things, like the ilumination, once you digitalize it... the white background is too bright against the thin lines for me Β Β but you should probably just ignore this sentence since I'm blind and I can't see things straight lol
Their faces do look really expressive, specially Ariel and the guy's eyes. His anatomy does look pretty good to me, but I have some things to comment about Ariel's figure. Her arm is too thin and does have a strange curvature. Even though her face is leaning down, we should see a bit more of her neck; also, once we do analyse the position of her neck on her shoulders, we can see that her neck is misplaced to the left. Even if the viewer is seeing her from that perspective, it should be more to the center of her shoulders. If you were going for a more realistic anatomy, I would also point that her waist is too thin compared to the width of her bust and waist; it looks humanly unrealistic even if you are portraiting a woman with a hourglass figure.
One thing I may point about the woman on the window is that her forearm is almost as long as the other part of her arm, and usually the first part is a bit longer.
I guess that's it, I hope my observations may help you in some way

Hello from ProjectComment
The idea is really cute. Ariel's facial expression is adorable as well. The composition is pretty decent too. I think though to improve this, you may try using a pen? Your pencil sketch is great. So now you can try outlining with a pen to give more impact. If it's unnerving, a great way to go about is to use a tracing paper, so you can try tracing your sketch with a pen, and that way, you can give it as many tries as possible. It takes a while to get used to using a pen and giving a lot of value to a single stroke of a pen. But I think it would give your art more impact and makes it more noticeable. Another thing you can work on is perspective. Your brick wall is well done and lovely, but if you look at it, the lines are parallel throughout. If you want to give it a bit of perspective, the lines should get closer on the left side as it is further away from you. Just something to think about. But all in all, it's cute and funny <3 Hope that helps.Β

Thank you, I'm glad you liked this.
This is an older piece, around 2 years old now.Β Since then I've tried various methods to add colour to my creations before settling on Copic markers, which of course necessitates the use of fineliners to outline.Β I haven't really considered just using fineliners without adding colour.Β Maybe that's something I should try in future.
It is unnerving to line or add colour on a traditional sketch.Β The fact that one mistake could ruin everything.Β But I just try to bite the bullet.Β And if it goes wrong I always have the scan of the original sketch.
I remember about the vanishing point from art lessons in school many decades ago LOL, but I find backgrounds a struggle to start with Β It's something I really need to work on, but they are such a chore
Β After the main characters and scene are done, to me it feels like I've finished and it's on to the next idea

I hate background myself. Recently I made a very short graphic novel for my friend. I drew all the characters, but for the background (it was a kitchen scene), I just took the photo of my own kitchen, manipulated the photo to look like comic book background and used it. Some of us aren't meant to do landscape art (i.e. background in my mind), and I think that's okay. Ultimately art is what makes us happy, so if it's nothing but pain, there is no need to do it. You know?Β

Paint, at least old versions, won't help with do-it-again-memes. I may. (On the occasion sharing screen-shots, so you'll see how it could be done)

Back when i was young... around the dawn of time Β Before satellite TV,Β there were only 4 channels (Channel 5 never worked around here
) and TV signals were received through an aerial on the roof, or in some cases a smaller version that sat on top of the TV itself.Β Which you turned by hand to get the best signal.
The hero in our story here was sent out to get an aerial for the TV and he came back with Disney's Little Mermaid; who was called Ariel and had been on TV.

Lucky guy
Heh I never feel old.Β It drives my wife nuts as she's 10 years younger than me and I'm still running rings around her
I love a little bit of everything too.Β I might have gotten older but I refuse to grow up
I grew up with 80's cartoons and still love them today.Β I've introduced my kids to anime and manga, and I love anything with a decent, intelligent storyline.Β No slasher movies
Were you to look through my galleries and you would see all sorts of interests from Disney to Aliens and monsters.Β But I grew up playing AD&D and the like, so I feel most at home with Fantasy/swords & Sorcery era.

What sort of anime and manga do you like?? My favorite will always be sailor moon!!
I need to upload art lol!! But if you go through my favorites I have a lot of interests!! XD
AD&D....?? Is that like dungeons and dragons??
I love mermaids/mermen, fairies, elves, unicorns, pegusi, old time fairy tales(from back when they a really had a moral to it!! Like aesop's fables, the brother's Grimm, Hans Christian Anderson, that kind of stuff!!) I also love pirates of the Caribbean and pirate movies in general!! XD
Do you like legend???

Raqonteur In reply to SylverFire-Lilithe [2013-12-29 09:22:54 +0000 UTC]
To interest me the movie has to have a decent plot and characters.Β Slasher movies don't Β I prefer style and theme over violence, which isn't an end unto itself but merely a (poor) means.Β I much prefer to see the bad guy beaten with brains or trickery; such as Sherlock Holmes or Dr. Who.Β My pet peeve about movies is the super-intelligent villain who suddenly becomes as dumb as a pile of rocks when confronted by the heroes and falls for silly ploys and leaves the back door to his lair unlocked/unguarded
That's one of the (many) reasons I like Avengers movie, Loki doesn't make any stupid mistakes and remains cunning and intelligent to the (squishy ) end.
Anime - well I liked season one of Bleach, but i gave up halfway through season two as it was pretty naff Β Fairy Tale is a favourite in this house; fun and frantic and often cleverly plotted.Β Mostly I've seen anime movies but the 3x3 eyes mini-series is a long time favourite, along with pretty much anything by Studio Ghibli
Yes AD&D is Dungeons & Dragons - it wasn't actually that game, but thats a name everyone recognises
If you like pirate and adventure type movies check out 'The Crimson Pirate' and 'The Flame and the Arrow' (a Robin Hood knock-off ).Β Starring a very young and very acrobatic Burt Lancaster and his mute companion.Β They are really old (probably 1960's or so at a guess) but good if slightly cheesy fun.Β All I can say is they must have grown up in a circus
Legend is passable as a movie simply for the atmosphere.Β I loved the extended dance scene with the eerie music but then I saw another version where that scene was completely different (and naff ) and even the music was different.

Hmm. I see. So you've never watched Chucky?? O_O
What does naff mean.....??
I love Hayo Miyazaki!!!
Do you like sailor moon??
I love old time horror movies!! Like the first Sweeney Todd movie!! And nosferatu!!
I love legend!! Did you know the original is over 120 mi utes long?!? But the us release is only 90 minutes long???
I love fairy tales and movies that still are like the old fairy tales instead of always watching sanitized versions like Disney. Like labyrinth and the dark crystal and of course legend.

I've seen Chucky.Β The first one was original and not bad, after that they just kept grinding out poorer and poorer copies
Naff is slang, it means poor, crap, not good, waste of time and space
I've never actually seen Sailor Moon
One of my favourite gothic fairy tale type is 'A company of Wolves'.Β The story is reasonable and the whole thing is really atmospheric and in places rather creepy.
