So I thought I would finish this a few weeks (a month? Two?) ago but I ended up hitting the colouring and shading wall as I usually do. I figured I might as well upload it here and maybe work on it later.The background is a placeholder and embarrassingly bad but it looked very bare without it. He may also be shockingly blue, when I drag the image between my two monitors it looks like I have a contrast issue, its very strange!
This is Khan, he's a Rokk in my headworld. They hunt large dragon like creatures in dog fight style combat, imagine Attack on Titan but in the sky.Β

Oh my goodness I love this creature design! I don't think I've seen this kind of approach to a winged creature (specifically the long neck and face) before! I really really enjoy it. Looks very balanced for flight. And there's something so regal about the proportions.Β The blue doesn't look too shocking on my macbook monitor!
Also, I feel you on obstacles of shading. I struggle so much with backgrounds and how to render them. Your placeholder seems perfectly well done to me

Thank you very much! I'm really glad you like him/the design! They're a very pompous race, I'm glad it comes across! Oh thats good to know, he looks a faded navy on one of my screens and bright blue on the other - shooting for something in the middle is driving me crazy!Β

Looks really good without shading.
Maybe just try adding some soft highlights to contrast the darker tones already there and see how you like it. I dunno, that's just my thoughts, take it how you like.

Thank you, no that is very good advice actually! Knowing that I can leave the shading as is and go to highlighting is extremely helpful, thank you, I appreciate it! (I'm terrible with colour, I really am)Β

(I think) the colors looks alright, a little contrast wouldnβt hurt though. If you want, in most art programs you can put a layer over you piece to change it to grey scale, that way, you can just focus on the darker and lighter tones.

When I look at this I imagine he's a Very important and respected person arriving to check up on the proceedings of ...maybe the planning of taking down a particularly volatile and difficult to catch prey? He's tired and would most like his first thing here to be resting alone with a hot drink, if only for a little while, but knows he likely won't have the time. Someone's going to need him and he's going to gently and patiently guide them through their problem, but that's simply a part of life he's come to accept.Β
