Description You're not imagining this! I am actually drawing something again. I think the last time I drew fanart was two years ago, with early season 1 ATLA.

Season 3 Zuko, a partial sketch on canvas-board. Why canvas-board? SO I CAN PAINT IT, OF COURSE. I am terribly excited about this, if you can't tell.

I've always had problems with posing bodies off the top of my head, so this time I went through my 1500+ photos of all my traveling in 2007, and picked out a photo I took of a friend, half-sketched his body shape, then replaced his head and clothes with Zuko's. It's hard, but the result is a lot better than if I'd tried to sketch without something to look at. I think it means the pose is more natural, too. Not terribly dynamic, maybe, but strong and solid-looking.

In the original photo my friend is holding a shovel that crosses in front of his legs; I haven't decided yet what Zuko's going to be holding.

I find myself looking obsessively at screencaps to get his rebel costume juuuuuuuuust right. They are coming along, though I still need to get his bottom half figured out. His face is a challenge... right now it's halfway between realism and cartoon-style. His nose looks cartoony, but his mouth is a realistic size instead of an anime or cartoon size. I think I'll keep it that way. The hair was, surprisingly, the easiest thing. I think it's because I already had the proper head size worked out. Also, Zuko is nearly smiling. Can you tell? My friend was smiling huge in the original picture; I toned it down to a half-smile while trying to figure out what Zuko's mouth should look like.

I'll scan it again when I have the full sketch, and then again when I have the painting part done. I don't know yet if I want to add a background.

There is one thing that's bothering me: I'm not sure if his face looks "Asian" enough. I tried to draw it from the screencaps, but still it doesn't look quite right. He doesn't not look Asian... he doesn't look like anything, right now. Maybe it doesn't matter at this stage, and is something I should worry about when I paint it.

Yes, Zuko's face is a pain D= Especially because it changes so much, even on the show. The only thing I see wrong with it is that his mouth is a little too long. The overall shape is perfect and the clothes are dead-on too. Good job, I can't wait to see it finished

I took the tiniest smidgen off the corner of his mouth, and you're right, that did help. And thanks for the comment in your other reply about his shoulders and body looking guy-like. I only got that because I was looking at a picture of a guy. Clearly this is a secret technique discovery I should have made ages ago. ((The guy in the reference picture was 19, not far from Zuko's age.)) I usually have a devil of a time with neck and shoulder proportions, and the line/angle of shoulders.

I'm kind of frightened of doing his hands. ::imagines hours of hand-drawing research:: The guy in the reference picture had work gloves on, so no hands to look at there.

What kind of prop should he be holding in his right hand? Should I give him something definite, or give him an open palm with flame? I don't really want to paint flame, because that just sounds like a headache waiting to happen...

He looks like a he's carrying a cup XD But I don't know how dramatic that is. Is you make his arm little higher, he could be resting his swords against his shoulder, but since he's looking that way, I don't know if that'd look good. Or, since the friend in your photo is supposed to be holding a shovel, Zuko should be holding something with those dimensions too, like Sokka's sword. It all depends in the story behind the drawing you want to make.

I could draw him holding Momo by the tail.

I'd have to draw momo, though. Hm.

I did it! It's also in scraps.

Drawing Momo was so easy!!! I might be tempted to draw nothing but Momo in the future, it was so easy compared to drawing Zuko. God his boots! ARGH. I could kill whatever animation designer came up with the ideal of pointed elf toes for Zuko's boots.

The composition turned out pretty good too, I think; he's holding Momo by the tail but it's pretty clear why, it doesn't just look like he's being mean. I can imagine the dialogue surrounding the scene:

Aang: WHY are you holding Momo by THE TAIL?
Katara: YOU MONSTER! I'LL END YOU!
Zuko: What? :: The rodent tried to steal my breakfast.
