Description
Edit: I finally realized what I was doing wrong with the headdress, I believe it's fixed now. I think my 2nd go was far more successful, there is a lot here I'm really happy with. The Xolon are the undead, raised from those fallen in battle by Mictali priests. The torn bodies are revived, infused with animal bone, unnatural strength, and skin that toughens to stone. They are rebuilt anew, now existing to serve - their former existence as the living faded away.
Many thanks to =arvalis for his help, especially with issue I was having with the leg and blade, you rock!
Paintovers/redlines/critiques are welcomed and encouraged if anyone cares to. I am more concerned about my approach to lighting/colour/background than anatomy (although you're welcome to point that out too - I know it has issues, like his wonky knees I'm considering redoing).

Totally, there's something delightful about a skull on a living body (or...yeah..lol)

I really dig the way you did the loin cloth thing, the lighting looks fantastic on the blade.

Ooooh! That looks 10000000x better! Also, pointing out the earring did adjust my view on the "twist" in the headdress.
Awesomesauce!

Simply stunning! I was going to say something about the head piece, but I seen your statement to the first person who mentioned that.
However I have to say I love the color contrast! It seems to be very well put together! I really like it

Thank you - yes, I've learned you win some, you lose some. Sometimes you just do your best and run with it.
I gave up on the damn thing and hated more "correct" versions...It could very well be that I just couldn't actually get it right. Either way, I'm at a loss for it, and I wasn't going to let that mistake stop me from finishing the rest.
Problem solved: Someone smacked him in the side of the head...boom, it's bent My brain let the issue go and I could finish it.

Haha that sounds like a good way for it to happen xD He is a warrior, so it's expected to have a few scraps and bents in armor!

This is awesome. I'd give you an official critique, but yeah, I has no moneys for subbies. Anyway. . . I love almost everything in this. The only thing that sits a bit wrong to me is the head dress. It's thin on the top (which is fine in and of itself) but on one side it looks like it twists one way to sit flat against his skull, and on the other side, it doesn't look like it twists at all. It could just be an optical illusion, but that's what I'm seeing.
The decorations on the head dress also look slightly off. The near side ones look like they're tilting back, and the far side ones like they're tilting forward. Again, it could be an optical illusion, so if it is, I's sowweh!
Over all, I really think this is great though! THe background kicks total ass.

On the second point - sorry I forgot to comment on it! When I did get the headdress angles accurate I didn't like it as much as my "incorrect" version - as odd as that sounds. So, I allowed myself to toll it up to battle damage as to why he's a tad misshaped on the headdress.
Weird huh? lol

Thank you
He's got an earring there, maybe that's screwing it up on your monitor (I have a really high end one and can see the contrast) because you can't see the small definitions between it and the headdress?
I tried to keep details to a minimum and allowed stuff in shadow not to be defined very well.

Ahhh, I thought the earring was part of the headdress! That would be why it might not look right to me. And yes, if you didn't like the "correct" Version, then that's fine, and the combo of that and the earring is probably why it looks odd to my eye. ^_^ Either way, he's hella awesome!

If it makes sense considering the earring, then I won't worry about that part Honestly, I couldn't even decide how the headdress connected to his head for sure until I just decided it is fused into his skull, much like the feathers.
Good eye on the headdress though, it was the one mistake I was hoping no one notice/care about, because I've stared at it too long to care anymore XD I probably spent a good 2-3 hours following correct perspective procedure, to say "wow this looks worse"
I appreciate you letting me know what you thought was wonky I'm glad you only saw so few mistakes haha!

*laughs* I'm sorry I pointed out the one thing you didn't want anyone to notice! <3 It really is a great peice though! I still have a long way to go. I have so much trouble with my anatomy and lines I don't even know what to do. -____- I try looking at people, and unless I can trace it straight across to my new art? Eeeeegh. It looks like a mangled mess of craptasticness. Blaaaah. That's why I'm looking forward to collabing with you so much. When someone else does the lines, I have a MUCH easier time of doing the painting.

No worries, it actually just dawned on me what I was doing wrong the whole time - so thank you so much for pointing the finger and making me rethink it.
Anatomy and perspective are hard, it takes lots of practice - I totally struggle too still. Sometimes I'll get it, other times it'll take HOURS just to get a face right, or a hand. I try and do daily studies and I still have to work very hard to get things right
Totally, the collab is coming up I swear haha. Friday is my last day of classes, and then I've got nothing to do - the economy is so bad I'm with 3 employment agencies and no one has work for me :sigh:.

Eeek! I hope you find work soon! I've pretty much given up in my area, but since I live with my parents, it works for us both. I do all the housework, they make sure I eat and have internets. And take your time with the collab! I didn't mean to sound whiny or anything. I'm just excited to be working with you. ^_^

Thank you, though honestly, for the hours spent personal commissions it only earns me pennies on the hour. Unfortunately, few people can realistically pay $15-20/h (or even min wage of $10/h) so I much prefer commercial projects.
Not that I'm complaining here, it's just a fact, but I do prefer a real job for actual income and personal commissions as a side/emergency expenses =x Which is why I rarely do them.

god this turned out incredible... definitely better than the female, although maybe it's just the awesome background I really love the shading though (you are a master!), and the detail put into the blade and his loincloth are wonderful. I'm also glad to see that you kept the broken arm!!
Gorgeous work
oh yeah, man beads ftw!!

Thanks so much! The background definitely helped because he didn't end up with outlines to make him pop on a solid colour background like her - so he was painted differently and better overall. I also found a better way to work from the experience of working with her. I don't think I'll ever slap something onto solid colour again, if nothing else, a gradient/textured blend works much better for me.
His blade still reminds me of a candy cane , and man beads indeed
