Description
Lathe and chisel, machine and cutting tool used in the ancient craft of woodturning :Woodturning is a form of woodworking that is used to create wooden objects on a lathe. Woodturning differs from most other forms of woodworking in that the wood is moving while a (relatively) stationary tool is used to cut and shape it.
(Wikipedia) The blur on the workpiece is due to the high spinning speed. Final product was a (rather meager) little Christmas tree ;]

Wow, I really like this. You captured everything wonderfully, and I like the inclusion of the sawdust covered hand in the shot. Black and white was a great choice too.

Thanks! I worked literally hours on the BW conversion
Was the photo clear to you, without explanation? (In case you still remember, more than a year later.)

Yes, the photo was clear to me from the start. And if by chance I didn't get it, the title gave it away. Maybe a lot of people don't know what a lathe is.

Obscure word indeed, I didn't know either before looking it up.

Oh - that's bad. My photos should speak for themselves and shouldn't need an explanation of what's going on I even rejected my initial crop and decided to include more of the hand to make it clearer.
The hand holds uses a chisel to shape a piece of wood clamped into a lathe. A lathe (or turning machine) is a machine used to spinning a workpiece to enable production of evenly round products (e.g. a chair leg). Same principle as a potter's wheel, only with a horizontal spinning axis. Machine and wood are motion-blurred from the spinning.
Here's a pic of the final product: [link]
