The Idea behind this picture is that the both of them just frolic around and that Rainbow Dash interprets maybe a little bit too much into the situation. (I really have the feeling that she has a little crush on Applejack in the show, with all that mutual tail-grabbing and such. And yeah, it's terrible creepy to be that obsessed over a cartoon for little girls. But what can I say? I enjoy it from the bottom of my heart. It makes me happy. <3)

For me it's just because I like Applejack the most and she and Dash just go so well together, or not. There always seems to be something between them, even when they're competing with each other.
Has nothing to do with her mane, more with their personalities. They clash so nicely.
At least that's why I'm shipping them together.
If I think more about it, I believe Rainbow Dash gets the most fandom-love (not only in regards to shipping), because she's a pretty cool (loyalty, Sonic Rainboom, etc. She gets so much spotlight in the series, like Episode 23 where in the end everything revolved around her) character with the two most well-known catchphrases. (Needs to be about 20% cooler and in ten seconds flat)
So, since she seems to be the most popular character, it's just consistent that she gets the most ships. I don't think her rainbow-mane has much to do with it.
