Description EDIT: Argh! Thanks for the DD! Totally didn't expect that. Ha ha! Also, I'll get around to answering some comments over the next couple days here. Answering them all is like a whole other job. But a very rewarding one. XD lol Thanks to everyone for having a look!

------------------------

Here is the beginning of a several part excerpt of a sequence I worked on for Ed, Edd n Eddy.

DOWNLOAD RECOMMENDED for these--they're big and full of little details.

The nature of storyboarding is a collaborative one. There is a first pass, a second pass... sometimes a 13th pass! And its possible that many hands can touch the board as it goes. As such, its hard to always credit where credit is due.

Scott Underwood, Jim Miller and I all contributed ideas to this sequence at the so-called 'thumbnail stage'. This is how we refer to a smaller, looser version where we plan out the shots and gags. Its the cleanup phase most often where we get to make meaningful acting decisions and of course expressions. Those were my specialty at the time (some say they still are) so this is where I really got to shine. 90-95% of the drawings shown here are mine. Because I've had such a strong overall influence through drawing and thumbing in this sequence I feel comfortable displaying it as somewhat my own.

As my friends know, I was very emotionally attached to this episode and most of all to this sequence and that in the botanical room after the commercial break.

Again, special thanks goes to both Scott Underwood and Jim Miller for their work on A Fistfull of Ed and for being wonderful mentors to me at AKA.

WOW!! your are just... So good!! Ive been thinking about becoming a storyboard artist myself sometime. I've been practicing drawing and studying different cartoon styles on my own. but im not going anywhere soon. So would you happen to have any advice for a lowly student who has no clue? Like on how to get your name out there and how to improve artistically? or is it all just luck if you get hired for anything or not... Gah!!! I'm so naive!

And its awesome how you worked on ed edd n eddy!! I watched it a lot as a kid and now I'm getting back into it. Now I can understand all the complexities of the characters and appreciate the whimsical animation. Gahh! I'm so jealous of people like you! And i'm glad you're working on my little pony! it's a really great show!

This was my absolute favorite episode from season 5!! I can't describe in words how absolutely awesome it is to see the mechanics behind it, even though I'm not big into animation. I really miss this show :c I've recently been obsessed with watching it again but it's not enough v.v Always thought it'd be cool to see them in college or something XD since most of the people who grew up with the show, like myself, are there right now.

Oh Yeah! The show was excellent..i Wish CN Was back to it roots...they were better..
They now have horrible taste in using flash tweening for animating...
if i do any crappy animation practicing ...id do it the classy way,fbf ,mix very little tween to only help out with the arms ad other limbs in a seperate layer..more or less cheap looking than other flash users who make cartoons nowadays.

Dude, this is my favorite cartoon! Got me rolling in tears of laughter many times.

I like all of the episodes but my favorite episode was the one when the Eds had Sarah's diary.

I couldn't WAIT to see how Sarah would destroy them if she found out when I first saw that episode. Of course, she did. xD

...Still can't believe that Ed "kissed" Edd to help him blow up the gum faster. o_o;

That part alone got me in tears of laughter. xD;

Raveneesimo In reply to ToddNTheShiningSword [2012-10-10 01:18:45 +0000 UTC]

They are usually written in. But sometimes we move them as the story gets fleshed out. You know... for dramatic effect!

These are absolutely incredible, Raven. So insightful, and SO beautiful to look at!! I love the thumbnail process--it must have been a thrill to work on such a creative team like that.

Are those far-away shots at the very top used to map/ plan out the entire scene? Or is that an actual shot--like a fade in or something.

I've gotta download ALL of these

Raveneesimo In reply to Baron-Von-Jello [2012-10-10 01:17:37 +0000 UTC]

It's actually a shot in the ep--overhead shot of the kids scrambling into a corner. It's just gotten really faded from all the photo-copying it has undergone.

My god,Ed Edd n Eddy story board are so complex compare to what I see in most cartoons.
But still it comes out wonderful at the end,so it's really worth it <3
I wish one day I could be able to do something like this,though I highly doubt it~

Raveneesimo In reply to vaness96 [2012-10-10 01:15:04 +0000 UTC]

You'll never know till you try.

I didn't know much, if anything about boarding when I first started. My knack for acting I think is the only reason they kept me around. Knowing what kind of shots to use and when to cut took me years of on-the-job practice to get a confident grasp of. These things still don't come *perfectly* natural to me. XD

All I'm saying is, if you're willing to work hard at it, you're probably capable of doing it.

vaness96 In reply to Raveneesimo [2012-10-10 01:29:12 +0000 UTC]

Oh really? So you voiced on of the character's to? (If that's what you meant by acting)
And actually I've worked on a story board recently for an EEnE Christmas project I'm working on.
It was a bitfun yet alot of work to do hehe :}

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Raveneesimo In reply to vaness96 [2012-10-10 03:14:13 +0000 UTC]

Oh no, no.. By "acting" I mean physical acting. Like the way a character gesticulates or reacts to things. Usually a script or outline will contain very little in the description of what the character is physically doing in a scene (depending on the show). Often when a character hugs someone or performs a specific gesture, that's invented by the storyboard artist. It can be akin to choreography at times.

It's actually my dream goal,but sadly I have no clue how to even start since I have no idea how to even get into CartoonNetwork.

Aw man, this is so exciting to see! Thank you for posting these. This episode was seriously one of my favorites out of the whole series, ha ha. You really do have a way with depicting emotions in their fullest intensities, it's been really inspiring to me over the the years I've been following your work on here.

You know, this reminds me of something I've been wondering about for awhile . . .If you don't mind me asking, in the EEnE movie, who boarded that one scene where Edd and Eddy have a fight after the whole quicksand incident? Were you involved with that?

👍: 1 ⏩: 1

Raveneesimo In reply to defauts [2012-10-10 01:11:33 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for all your kind words.

As to your question, yes I did.. That scene did not exist in the original written outline. Danny was kind to let me try something so dramatic. It was both a challenge and a pleasure to work with him.

Ah, you're welcome! And thank you for the reply. Ah hah, awesome, the way the acting was done I figured you had to be involved. One of my favorite scenes in cartoons in general! Man, there's something really great about an otherwise funny cartoon pulling off those moments of sincere emotional severity, wish I saw it more often. Thanks again.

This is one of my favorite episodes, for sure. I like so much about it, but it's hard to put into words exactly why. I think it shows off the characters really well. They just come off as really vibrant (not that they don't always, but...you know what I mean, hopefully). It's really neat to be able to take a look at these and see what all goes into an episode.

Thanks so much!

Thanks! It just goes to show how much a location can lend to the gravity of a scene. From my early, early versions of that scene (it was revised several times by myself, Scott and Jim esp when the episode was doubled in length--it was originally intended as an 11-minute--can you imagine?), the lights were always off in it. There he is, huddled in his sanctuary of light. When he ventures out, he's hurt again.

numbuh0051 In reply to Raveneesimo [2012-08-08 06:36:54 +0000 UTC]

NP! Whoa, only 11 minutes? I don't think that would've been enough to convey the emotion in this episode. The lighting was gorgeous and it's usually pretty important for it to indicate the character's feelings. It serves as symbolism.
