Sara glared down at the woman that knelt before her, her arcblades at the ready. "You have been charged with collusion with agents of the Dead God, research of banned magicks, and intentional heresies against the Jaghatai Temple. What say you, magus?"

The woman, a haggard mess who looked to have not eaten in days, looked up at Sara pleadingly. "I have done no such things...please, I beg you, let me free. I have children to watch, my husband fell in service in the Emperor's Legions..." She brought her hands to her face and began to sob.

Sara's hands fell slowly as her grip on her arcblades loosened, her face softening a bit. Sheathing her blades on her back, Sara knelt in front of the woman. "Worry not, magus. We will further investigate this situation and find the true culprit. Now go, return to your family."

The woman smiled and bowed deeply. "Oh, thank you, thank you Blessed Acolyte!" She stood quickly, and hurried off.

Sara nodded contentedly to herself, and returned to the temple. She had much work to do beyond this, though most of it was not nearly so trying.

The temple was in ruins. Sara could see the destruction even from the next hill over. Agents of the Dead God were upon it, and there was no chance she could save it, not with her skill. She had called for other Wardens, but they were hours away at best. It was too late for the monks, for the neophytes that had been her friends. Her grip on her arcblades tightened, until her knuckles ached and turned white.

Magic was an abomination. She understood now. The magus she had set free would be the first she hunted down. She would not make the same mistake again. There were no innocent among the magi.
