Description
Update on Sept 1st 2013: I remade the tutorial almost completely because the old one kinda sucked. If anyone is interested about the old version it's here: i.imgur.com/VrFRPVE.jpgSince I get asked about which tool I used a lot, this improved version is done with the basic brush tool.
Whew
Anyway, when ~Rustic-Moonlit-Rose commented that the fire in raycrystal.deviantart.com/art/… looks amazing I said that tutorials could help her but she said that there aren't any for Sai really and I noticed that too so I thought I could make one since I like drawing fire
So yeah... I hope it's good
By the way, I used the watercolor tool (like I always do).
Since people are asking about it, the settings I use are 0 for blending, 50 for dilution, 80 for persistence.
EDIT: Holy f--- O_O I wake up in the morning and what do I find...? 2000 faves!!! +40 watchers more
EDIT2: ...omg. A DD? I can't believe it, oh my god thank you so much!!!! O_O *does not know what to say*

It's great ! Please do you have a tutorial about a whole artwork of you or do you think you might do it ? I really love your techniques..!!
Last little question : are the clouds more easy to do than fire ?
Sorry if I bore you with all my comments... alright I'm going to stop it now

Thank you! ^^ No, I don't have other tutorials yet but I will make something in the future :3
And well I guess that depends on the person, for some it might be and for some not.. but I think clouds are a bit harder, maybe XD Since they need more details than fire, but it really depends
And you're not bothering me at all

This tutorial is lovely <3
It was VERY helpful for me, because i always used another way to make fire, and it look much better now
P.S. Sorry to bother you, but may i know your brush settings while painting the fire? I tried a number of settings in SAI, but it didnt seem to help that much in making the fire better... Thank you!

omg I feel so ignorant, and frustrated I don't understand anything you did(other than getting the basic shape ). I don't understand how you made it blurry, did you just use the the water color to do that?
Damn, you made great looking fire, but I just can't get it .

RayCrystal In reply to DoctorWhoMe [2011-10-07 10:33:24 +0000 UTC]
Sorry it's difficult to explain well, but yeah that's something I can say that I didn't use anything else than water color tool (so I also "blurred" it with it) I don't even recommend using the blur tool since it makes it look stupid
But yeah.. practice makes perfect I guess

DoctorWhoMe In reply to RayCrystal [2011-10-07 18:29:10 +0000 UTC]
Lol I copied your tutorial into Sai so I could practice right next to your example and it came out well lol Thanks for the very good tutorial. Btw do you know why sai seems to mute the colors of pictures you copy into it? when I used the color picker to get your colors they were way more mute than in your pic.

RayCrystal In reply to DoctorWhoMe [2011-10-08 16:26:08 +0000 UTC]
Haha, nice that it worked out And I've totally noticed the same, I have no idea why it does that so I usually need to adjust the color manually a bit.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
DoctorWhoMe In reply to RayCrystal [2011-10-08 21:02:16 +0000 UTC]
Ha ha yep manual adjustments work wonders, I actually want to make some super hot almost exaggerated fire in my next piece. So I practiced with normal "real" colors, and then I used brighter colors in my piece. Btw in the second panel, do you use another tool to shape the basic fire. If so do you lower the density or anything like that?

RayCrystal In reply to DoctorWhoMe [2011-10-10 14:21:39 +0000 UTC]
Nice And nope, I didn't change anything. I never really change the settings since I'm not sure what they actually do
