Description Well, I finished my first official painting with Corel Painter 12 and too many d'oh and ohhhh moments in the process. Shading and colors have the subtlety of a sledgehammer, I know but hey, I'm still learning the software. I do love how the program allows me to pick up colors for underneath, etc; feels like the old days when I'd try painting with oils.

Thing I'm most proud of? The engraving on the katana.

References: Shutterstock ([link] primarily), Artists' 3D pose tool, myself and my husband's tattoo.

Done with Corel Painter 12 and WACOM Intuos 4 tablet.

I love it. I have been having trouble with painting hair. Have any tips or brushes you used?

Thanks.

Well ... hair. I dunno what software you use but to paint hair, my general advice would be to change how you see hair. Try to see its form and shape in lights and darks. Paint the forms. Once you have that, you can start defining it and adding strands, etc. The lightest part of hair require the most detail. Use references when you can or until you feel you understand hair.

I don't use special brushes for hair; the standard ones, i.e. flat bristle and hard round, in Photoshop work great. Putting them on low opacity and flow will allow you more control in your brushstroke.

Hope that was helpful. Send me a note if you have any questions. I also have a bunch of hair tutorials faved if you want to take a look.

The colours look great to me. This is a superb image - detailing on the katana is excellent.

As always, the hair looks great, especially the shine on it. Definitely one of your talents
And before I even read the description, I thought the katana hilt was one of the best looking things. Bravo

Thanks. Painting hair on Painter kinda sucked cos the brushes does not taper off according to your stroke. I had to reduce the size of the brush and opacity to make it work. I'm happy that you still think I'm great at painting hair.

Glad you like the hilt too.

Phew, thanks for telling me. I wasn't sure if there was an option to allow the brush to taper off like in Photoshop and real life. So much for Painter mimicking traditional media, eh?
