Description I'm not a particularly serious cosplayer but I'm friends with a lot of cosplayers and I occasionally do cosplay meetups.

One thing that particularly bothers me is when people feel like they have complete ownership of the characters they cosplay and are hostile towards other people who cosplay the same character. If you cosplay, I'm sure you know which people I'm talking about.

It should go without saying that unless you're cosplaying an OC, there's really no reason to be so possessive of characters, considering you don't actually own them. Cosplaying is supposed to be about having fun and showing love for the characters. If someone cosplays the same character as you, you should revel in the love for that character you share, not feel as though the character is being stolen from you. The more the merrier, I say. (Hell, without my fellow Canada cosplayers, who will help me take over the world and turn it into a giant Canadian colony? You really must think about these things.)

So yeah. I think that's all. If you disagree, that's cool...though it would be nice if you didn't flame me.

This also reminds me of middle school when a girl who obviously had a like\dislike thing towards me, and kept telling me that I couldn't wear blue because it was "her color"

Honey no one owns the color blue LOL

I am going to cosplay some of my OCs used in my fanfics, but even there I encourage ppl to cosplay them.

It is a lot worse when some cosplayers "forbid" everyone from cosplaying "their" characters, but at the end they never cosplay said characters! They just wantΒ to avoid anyone else to stand out cosplaying the "forbidden" character.Β

If a person actually is not going to cosplay a character, why the hell do that person make a fuss about others cosplaying it?!Β Now THIS is really fucked up.

Heck, I even set out to scout for people who had potential of looking better than myself in the cosplays I had done! I love it whenever I find someone who fits the character well, and I'll introduce them to the fandom right away. I don't deny a certain degree of jealousy towards their perfection, but I respect and admire them all the same. Cosplay is for fun, and for the fandom!

Though, I think you should also make a "Cosplaying a character doesn't make you him/her" for the over enthusiast xD

I draw inspiration from other cosplayers, I don't see how some people hate other cosplayers just for cosplaying as the same character.

Gee, I know! I love hearing about people who cosplay the same characters as me! It's very interesting to learn about and hear from what they did to make their cosplay come to life

I think the biggest reason people get defensive about a character they're cosplaying is because they feel intimidated or threatened that the other person's outfit is more accurate or well liked by others than their own and so, become very jealous and possessive over the character they are trying to portray. But cosplay shouldn't be about being 'the best'--it should be about having fun!

I'd have been like that if I cosplayed when I was 10. The internet has had a better effect on me than some other people.

I mean, without the other Gumi cosplayers, where would I have learnt where to order the wig from?

I was at a con and saw two Narutos attack each other in a fit of love XD They started commenting on awesome parts of each other's costumes and ended up walking away with a new friend AND tips on how to better their costumes.

I saw a Tamaki Suoh tell another Tamaki that he was the most gorgeous man he'd ever seen XD

And I saw three Grells team up to power-glomp a Sebastian.

Yeh this things happens.. >_>'

I went to an anime event here in Brazil cosplay Alice in Wonderland, I was wearing a short blond wig 'cause i knew if there were other Alice's i would be different some how. As I stepped in the event this Alice came from no where and told ME that Alice doesn't have short hair, like: "You're not Alice are you? Cause she's got long hair."

I couldn't believe what I was hearing. o_x

YES!!! THANK YOU!!!
God, I had a friend of mine, and for years we had always planned to do an Axel and Roxas cosplay together (hell, we were pretty much DUBBED as Axel and Roxas by our friends for a long time). Last year at a convention, we met this awesome Roxas cosplayer. She was really cool.
This year, the same friend and I were talking about our cosplays, when the other girl butts in and says, 'She can't be Roxas. I'm the only Roxas in this group.'
My friend said that it would be okay to have 2, like Organization Roxas and Twilight Town Roxas.
Oh no, she wouldn't have that. 'I'm not going to cosplay a character if another person from the group is doing the same one. She can be Sora.' (Granted, I have no problem with Sora)
Then when I mentioned cosplaying Aqua, she said, 'Yeah. Be Aqua. Roxas is my spot.'
My friend and I laughed at the thought of an Axel/Aqua pairing, but the other girl just got offended. She comes to me and says, 'Now she wants to cosplay a whole different pairing.'
I was just sitting there thinking 'BITCH CHILL THE FUCK OUT'
I just thought it was really rude and greedy of her. And now I feel like she's trying to steal my best friend...

Sorry for the long comment D:

Ugh! I'm sorry you had to go through that. I hate that attitude! I'd take a guess that girl was just insecure. So stupid and so unnecessary.

In my Hetalia group, we've got three Frances, three Englands, two Italys, etc. Wanting to be the only member of your cosplay group to be a certain character is just unrealistic, especially if you want to include all of your friends.

ReinaSasuke In reply to rcsi1 [2011-01-24 21:30:24 +0000 UTC]

I know, right?
I mean, so what if you're in a cosplay group and someone wants to cosplay the same character as you? Don't be a jerk; encourage them. I mean, if I wanted to cosplay Prussia and my friend wanted to cosplay him too, I wouldn't be rude about it. I'd tell them, 'Awesome. Now we have two! That'll be twice the Prussia awesome-ness!'
I hate people that have to pull crap like that D:<

So fucking true!

It's a one thing playing and acting like a character, but gosh there are limits too! Like one time in Boston from what people had told me, not to mention sent me the links, there were scandals through Hetalia main group in livejournal when some group cosplayers dressed up as Germany and Prussia who did very stupid thing in the shooting by Hitler hailing for example.

So yeah, you may dress like them, but official characters are still copyrighted to the real creators.

lol I don't run into this problem very often, since I usually either cosplay as my own characters or go out of my way to pick costumes that have nothing to do with where I'm going. My friend had to talk me out of being Simbaa for Anime North. XD

I don't remember the logic, but I think it came down to something like Disney at an anime convention would be sacrilege. So instead I went as Gerard Way.
