Alright, now I subject you all to my headcannon. Brace yourselves.
In the original draft of the series, Impmon was going to be Takato's partner, which is a concept that I love. But I also love Guilmon being Takato partner, so I simply have them both as his two Digimon.

In my timeline, Takato doodles up Guilmon, finds the card, and wishes Guilmon to life. Between wishing for him and finding him, however, Impmon finds Takato and just kinda yells at him.
Takato finds Guilmon and brings him home, where his parents find out about him and after initially freaking out, help him care for the hatchling. (In this continuity, Guilmon's virus nature makes him more of an unknowing bully who usually has to be taught not to be so overly-assertive with others.)

They keep crossing paths with Impmon, who eventually discovers that Takato is supposed to be his Tamer, but he thinks he missed his chance and becomes bitter as a result, on top of his other issues. Guilmon and Takato, on the other hand, are just fine with the idea of Impmon being Takato's second digimon, and in this pic they demonstrate this with aggressive cuddles.

In my little take on the Tamers series, Ai and Mako don't exist.
I like them, I do! But I like the sitaution I've forced Impmon into even more.
