Description Ham House - Richmond-upon-Thames (England), May 2016

Ham House is one of the grand houses that can be found alongside the River Thames, to the west of London. It was originally built in the early 17th century and remained the property of the prominent Tollemache family for most of its existence, before being donated to the National Trust in 1948. The house has beautiful grounds and boasts many different gardens, including the Cherry Garden, a small gem with a meticulous diamond pattern, planted with lavender bush and dotted with aligned topiary cones. Thus glimpsed through a hole in the hedge designed for that purpose, the Cherry Garden brings to mind the fantasy of a hieratic space which could never be reached or stepped on, only circumnavigated, like the secret chamber in the Great Pyramid. A place with no path leading to it. The heart of the Labyrinth.
