Naples (Italy), June 2017

Catching the slanting rays of the evening sun, a cruise ship sedately but determinedly leaves the port of Naples, as the genteel buildings of the San Ferdinando district soak up the last of the day's warmth.

What's that ? A picture of the Gulf of Naples without Mount Vesuvius or the island of Capri ? Both landmarks are indeed out of shot, and only the Sorrentine Peninsula, at the southern end of the gulf, is discernible in the distance : apologies for that ! But my eye was caught by the contrasting colours as well as the way the whole scene seemed to capture one of the more quiet aspects of life in this multifaceted, loud, irritating and captivating city.
