Description Ham House - Richmond-upon-Thames (England), May 2016

Ham House is one of the grand houses that can be found alongside the River Thames, to the west of London. It was originally built in the early 17th century and remained the property of the prominent Tollemache family for most of its existence, before being donated to the National Trust in 1948.

At the very front of the house stands the statue of this venerable gentleman : he is neither Dionysus, nor a Triton, nor indeed Time himself, but Old Father Thames, the personification of the river flowing almost right next door. Although still boasting an impressive chest and fine biceps, Father Thames definitely looks a bit the worse for wear here. Strange tricks of the light made the façade of the building appear almost likewise dilapidated, with pockmarked brick and broken windows. It is not, heaven forbid (this is a National Trust house, after all), but the feeling of slow and inexorable decay was pervasive enough to warrant the picture.

True ! Obviously, being the tutelary deity of a major river is no laughing matter, especially when you're suffering from an extreme case of arthritis in the finger joints. This may explain his sombre brow. Thanks a lot for your feedback !
