“The World on Fire”

For the past week or so, forest fires have been raging across the Southwestern United States. Firefighting teams, first responders, and even some superheroes have been trying to contain the fires and extinguish them. One hero, Firestorm, the superhero identity of Jason Raymond, is able to withstand the flames as he entered the danger to find survivors and shuttle them to safety. But he couldn’t believe what he discovered in the fire this day: a large, armored man expelling and spreading the flames that they were trying to put out. Firestorm battled the mechanical menace, which calls itself Brimstone, but nearly lost his life in the process before the threat disappeared into the fire. Green Lantern Kyle Rayner, a friend of Jason, pulled Firestorm out of the fire and got him to safety, but was unable to see the new villain. When Jason awoke in an emergency medical camp, he told Kyle about Brimstone, claiming he’s the cause of the fires. Firestorm and Green Lantern soon traced the source of the initial fires to STAR Laboratories facility in California. The head of the facility explained, while providing Firestorm and Green Lantern with video footage of what happened, that they were researching and constructing a prototype of a suit capable of surviving exposure to a volcano’s pyroclastic flow so they can research them more thoroughly. However, one scientist, Dr. Simon Ecks, was seemingly killed in an accident involving a separate research project. However, Ecks emerged as a visible spirit, and he possessed the suit. Under Ecks’ control, the suit morphed into a more organic, monstrous form, and he assimilated a chemical production system to create a pair of flame-throwers attached to the suit’s wrists. The head of the facility then revealed a weakness in the suit they had yet to resolve, and that the heroes can use to defeat Brimstone. While it can withstand high temperatures, it cannot withstand extreme cold, but they need to use a liquid nitrogen-based internal cooling system to protect the intended wearer. Firestorm and GL formulated a plan and got to work. As Brimstone stomped through the fires he created, he saw the two heroes flying in to fight him again. Using GL’s powers, he created a titanic, airtight bubble that encapsulated the area, trapping himself, Firestorm, and Brimstone inside. As the fires died down from the lack of oxygen (Firestorm and Green Lantern were protected from suffocation via GL’s power), Brimstone rushed the heroes. Firestorm used his powers of molecular manipulation to create a steady and powerful stream of liquid nitrogen to disable and destroy the suit that Ecks is possessing. Simon Ecks’ visible spirit emerged from the destroyed suit and tried to escape. Firestorm used his powers to make Ecks tangible again, like he did to fight the Shadow Demons controlled by the Uncreation Wave during the Crisis of Infinite Earths, and Green Lantern trapped him in a bubble. In the end, the Department of Extranormal Operations (The DEO) took custody of Ecks and the destroyed suit, and the fires were soon enough put out by the efforts of the responders and the superhero community.
