Description
Once again we return to the 31st Century, to the orbiting colony of New Chronos, which has long ago replaced Saturn’s moon of Titan. About one century or so ago, the free worlds of the Universe were in the throes of The Imperiax War. A technologically-advanced hive mind of war machines, The Imperiax Collective, sought galactic domination, and the Spectrum Lanterns, the military police of the universe, were almost completely slaughtered by them, including their leaders, The Guardians. The free worlds united and delivered a "corosi-volatile" detonator to Imperiax’s main core before it could reach The Source at the very center of the universe. The core was destroyed, and all of its Combat Probes were permanently disabled and scattered to the void of space. Using the scavenged Imperiax technology, the species of the universe became more advanced and they merged into The United Planets. Titan was destroyed by the Imperiax Collective, so they built the colony of New Chronos in its place, which became the capital of the U.P. Recently, a completely-intact Imperiax probe was recovered by the Baroque Gardens Policorp, and is being sent to the xenotech department of their branch headquarters on New Chronos. The New Chronos branch of Baroque is settled within the colony’s Neo Gotham District, and also settled there is a team of metahumans working to expose Baroque’s corruption: The Titans. As the titanic Probe was being ported into the xenotech department, Batman, the leader of the Titans, was spying from the shadows. The leader of the Probe’s research team is Doctor Walter Shreeve, who is answering directly to the financier of this research project, Jemm Ardeen. Jemm is the leader of the Federal Litigation House, one of the governing bodies of the mother-world of Saturn. Accompanying Jemm is his daughter Imra Ardeen, aka Saturn Girl of the Legion of Super Heroes, along with Jogarr Ardeen, Jemm’s cousin and Imra’s uncle, and Chen Yull, a high-ranking officer of the FLH’s troops (colloquially known as The Faceless, due to wearing protective masks that possess no facial features). Jemm is assigning not only Yull’s team to guard the probe technology, but has asked his daughter Imra to negotiate with the Legion on behalf of himself, so they can provide additional protection to the research. Imra agreed to do so, and left; the Batman slinked back into the shadows. Back at the headquarters of the Legion of Super Heroes, Saturn Girl talked to Five, the super-intelligent cyborg leader, and he agreed to speaking to Triplicate Girl, Timberwolf, and Ferro Lad about doing guard detail for the project. That night, Saturn Girl’s powers activated while she was trying to sleep and she detected another lifeform in her room. She woke to a startling sight: The Batman was in her room with her! Batman warned her that the Baroques Garden Policorp cannot be trusted, and whatever they and her father are planning cannot be safe for anyone. Imra said that HE cannot be trusted, and she attacked him with telekinesis. Batman escaped her radius of influence and disappeared. The next day, Saturn Girl decided to join Triplicate Girl, Timberwolf, and Ferro Lad in keeping an eye out for the Baroque facility the probe is being kept. Still thinking about Batman’s warning, she talked to her father and Dr. Shreeve about their work and they explained that it’s classified. She even secretly read Shreeve’s mind and found no secrets being kept… except there was a faint familiarity about Shreeve’s brain waves… Realizing his mind is protected by a Saturnian’s mental influence, Saturn Girl decided that Batman was right and something IS up. She left and prowled the streets of Neo Gotham until she was attacked by Captain Action, one of The Titans. Imra told him she didn’t want to fight and wanted to speak with Batman about Baroque. Imra met with Batman, Captain Action, and the remaining Titans, Witchfire, Deadline, and Cyborgirl, and asked for their help in exposing the truth behind the Imperiax Probe research. Over the course of two days, The Titans spied on Baroque while Saturn Girl and the stationed Legionnaires worked on the inside to maintain the illusion of co-operation. In the end, Batman discovered that Shreeve and Imra’s uncle Jogarr, whose mental powers protected Shreeve, were working on a neural-interface that would allow a Saturnian to control the Probe… and perhaps all of the remaining probes out there! That way, the United Planets will bend to their will! The next day, the Sci-Police of New Chronos, flanked by Five, Saturn Girl, and other members of the Legion of Super Heroes, raided the Baroque facility. In a stand-off between the Sci-Police and the Faceless, Shreeve pulled out his hearing aide and blasted the Sci-Police with a sonic gun hidden on his person. This led to a fight between the Legion and the Faceless as Jogarr and Shreeve ran for it. Batman and the Titans caught Shreeve in his office… just as he changed into a costume armed with more powerful sonic cannons. Calling himself Shriek, Shreeve fought Batman and the Titans before escaping. Meanwhile, the Legion, the Sci-Police, and Jemm were too late from stopping Jogarr from hooking the neural-interface up to himself, allowing him to reactivate the Imperiax probe. Imperiax, carrying a vulnerable Jogarr in a torso compartment built into it, rampaged through New Chronos until the Legion of Super Heroes stepped up to it. In the end, Imperiax was too damaged by the fight to continue, Jogarr and the interface were ripped out of it, and Imperiax’s central power core was damaged and about to blow, which could take New Chronos with it! Ferro Lad, in his organic-metal form, held the reaction at bay while Jemm piloted Imperiax remotely, away from anything that could be harmed by the explosion. In the void of space, Imperiax exploded, killing Ferro Lad. Jogarr was arrested for the conspiracy, Shriek was still missing, the Titans disappeared back into the shadows, and the heads of Baroque Garden returned to the Saraswati colony. The Legion held a funeral honoring the life of Andrew “Ferro Lad” Nolan, who sacrificed his life to save New Chronos from Imperiax.
