Description
It’s been a week since the Ebola Gulf A pandemic was unleashed upon the world, infecting major cities across the planet. The independent hero teams and governmental organizations of the world are struggling to keep the peace and find a cure for the disease. Riots spread across the cities, the supervillain population is running rampant, communes of paranoid survivalists are hiding in the wilderness, and The Titans, a major team of heroes, are missing in action. The worst case of this is in Pittsburgh, PA, which was declared a No Man’s Land; the Nation Guard barricaded the city limits so no-one can get in or out, crucial supplies are dwindling, and mob rule is the law of the land. The Batman, the defender of the city, and his allies are attempting to keep the peace, despite their relationship with the Batman straining due to recent controversies. Speaking of which, the Batman was unaware of this but when he got into a brutal rooftop fight with his former partner Robin, whom the Batman is now convinced is responsible for the murder of criminal conspirator Amanda Waller, he was being filmed! Usually he does his best to destroy all recorded evidence of his existence, but Batman was not paying attention to this during the fight. A man named Wayne Williams was relaxing atop his apartment building’s roof when he saw the fight between Batman and Robin, and, flabbergasted at this, recorded this on his smart phone. As the weeks went on between the fight and the outbreak of Ebola Gulf A, Wayne studied the fight and became more disillusioned with the Batman, seeing him as a cruel tyrant enforcing his will upon a fearful populace and striking down anyone, even his closest allies, as he sees fit. Wayne soon began showing the video to anyone who would listen to him, and they began finding solidarity in a hatred for Batman… and support for Robin.
As the days passed in Pittsburgh, Batman had been diligently working around the clock for a possible cure for The Clench (the nickname for the pandemic), while his remaining allies within the city, including police captain James Gordon, were working on providing essentials to the quarantined and stricken civilians and keeping the peace within the city. One night, while Batman was still trying to get in contact with Nightwing, not yet realizing he was kidnapped some time ago, a call went out to him from Gordon about a hostage situation involving UN relief workers. After incessant urging to drop the cure research for a while by Batman’s fiance Barbara Gordon, Captain Gordon’s daughter, Batman sped to the hostage situation’s location in the Batmobile. In the abandoned mall’s central court, Batman saw several hostages tied up and in chairs, surrounded by large video monitors. Batman glided down and untied the hostages. One of the hostages, claiming to “agree with what he saw”, pulled a knife on Batman and attacked! Batman subdued the worker before the monitors flickered on, revealing, to Batman’s shock, the video of him fighting Robin! As the relief workers scattered, out of nowhere appeared several costumed men and women (including the three pictured above), all bearing the ‘R’-symbol of Robin. Their leader, Wayne Williams, approached Batman, drew two guns and yelled “WE ARE ROBIN!” The team, known as ‘We Are Robin’, then attacked Batman with their various weapons and combat skills, swarming him with superior numbers. Batman could hold them off, but not for long. But, just as We Are Robin gained the upper hand on the Batman, several cryokinetic beams shot out from the shadows and partially froze several members of We Are Robin. It was Dr. Victor Schivel, aka the super-criminal Mister Freeze, who rescued Batman and helped him over to the Batmobile. Batman and Mr. Freeze drove off and regrouped. In a dark alley somewhere in the city, Batman demanded to know why Mr. Freeze helped him. Victor explained that he has intel of a massive breakout of the most dangerous patients of the Arkham Institute, which threatens the people of the city. Victor’s stake in this is this: Victor’s wife Nora is behind this.
Notes:
* The members of We Are Robin are based on Justice League and other DC characters members re-imagined by Stan Lee.
** Wayne Williams, a former convict with a multitude of combat/wrestling skills, wears a costume based on Stan Lee’s version of Robin.
** The We Are Robin members above are Maria Mendoza, Leonard Lewis, and Mary Maxwell, based Stan Lee’s versions of Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and The Flash.

Nice tribute/in-joke to one of Stan the Man’s more odder contributions to comics.

I seriously love this modern twist of Stan Lee's DC characters. I also love the relevance of the story. I am super pumped to see where it goes!
