Description

In the frozen wilderness of Russia, we come upon a military compound in the dead of night as a militia group called The Hammer, assaults it. Loyal to the ideals of the USSR and Communism, The Hammer and its leader, former military Colonel Anatoli Knyazev, attacked the base and raided it of its’ most important contents: a series of enhanced battle armor called the Rocket Red Brigade. The Hammer loaded the RRB armors into their transports and escaped before backup from nearby outposts could intervene. At the United Nations in New York City, the office of Mason Tsumo was informed about the RRB’s theft and he assembled as many members of the UN’s metahuman strike team, The Global Guardians, as he could. The Guardians who were not on other assignments at the time, assembled here by Tsumo, were Dmitri Pushkin, alias Rocket Red 4, Dominic Mndawe, alias B’Wana Beast, Miguel Barragan, alias Bunker, and Ghost Fox, whose real name is known only to her. Dmitri was already informed of the RRB’s heist by his superiors in Moscow, and he was assigned to lead his fellow Global Guardians by both them and the UN. The other Guardians were informed by Tsumo about the perpetrators. Colonel Knyazev, now going by the alias of “The KGBeast”, is a follower of Communism who lost one of his arms in an explosion; the blast was caused by privately-led insurgents from America who stole from a Russian governmental project called Black Zero more than a decade ago. For his failure to prevent Black Zero’s destruction, Colonel Knyazev was dishonorably discharged and then arrested; the Hammer militia eventually broke him out and then he soon enough took control of them. As the Global Guardians prepared to fly to Moscow to begin their investigation of The Hammer and the heist, Bunker expressed his concerns to Rocket Red 4. You see, Miguel is gay, so he’s not entirely fond of helping the Russian government, which has staunch anti-LGBT laws. Dmitri explained that he also doesn’t agree with a lot of his home country’s policies, but he serves them for the goal of preserving human life. After all, heroes like them are an inspiration to be better, so they can perhaps sway hearts and minds through their good deeds. Miguel said he would think about what Dmitri said. The Global Guardians traveled by jet to Moscow and then, from there, by convoy to the RRB’s facility where they met the team’s leader and Rocket Red 1, Josef Denisovich. In the facility, Ghost Fox began her investigation of the raid and the team eventually found evidence of The Hammer’s trail out of the facility and into the wilderness. As night fell, the GG traveled through the forests and the tundra to a mountain North of the RRB base. Bunker’s geokinetic abilities determined that the mountain had been hollowed out, and it’s possible that The Hammer is set up there. The Global Guardians infiltrated the hidden base through the upper-most entrance and snuck down to the hangar bay. There is where they found a small army of automated battle armors, reverse-engineered from the stolen Rocket Red tech, preparing to launch. KGBeast was there, commanding his Hammer forces to prepare for take off and invade Moscow. Ghost Fox, thinking she was hidden enough, prepared to toss a poison dart to kill KGBeast; she was attacked from behind by a large, muscular woman working for the Hammer. The two dropped to the hangar floor as Ghost Fox fought this enemy, Bruno, to a standstill. The other Global Guardians had to come to her aide as the Hammer soldiers swarmed upon them. KGBeast’s two bodyguards, Mr. Hammer and Mr. Sickle, joined the fray as their leader launched the battle armors from the hangar and initiated the invasion of Moscow. KGBeast, with a modified assault rifle replacing his missing arm, traveled with his fleet by way of armed carrier with other Hammer soldiers. The Global Guardians battled Bruno, Mr. Hammer, Mr. Sickle, and the remaining Hammer soldiers and defeated them, giving themselves enough time to radio contact the Russian military and warn them of the invasion. The GG traveled back to Moscow and helped the military fend off the robotic armors. KGBeast and his men were in the capitol building, and seconds away from murdering President Alexi Nikolai when Bunker attacked the Hammer soldiers and KGBeast with his powers, trapping them in a prison of stone. Eventually, the battle armors were all destroyed in combat and the Hammer forces were defeated. KGBeast and his minions were arrested and the Rocket Red Brigade’s technology and schematics were returned to their rightful place. President Nikolai congratulated the Global Guardians for saving Russia, and Bunker for saving his life. Bunker buffeted his thanks and walked away, saying he was only doing his duty as a superhero…

Notes:

* The insurgents who led to the fall of Black Zero were the Suicide Squad, led by Lionel Luthor, aka “Mockingbird”.

** The blast that destroyed the Black Zero site and took off KGBeast’s arm was caused by the Suicide Squad member Manchester Black.

* Bruno is based on a minion of the Joker from “The Dark Knight Returns”, but now a Communist instead of a Nazi.

* Mr. Hammer and Mr. Sickle, formerly-conjoined twin brothers, originally were from “Batman: Arkham City”.
