Description
It’s 2019 and it’s back to school for 11-year-old cousins Ben and Gwen Tennyson.
Several months ago, during their 2018 summer vacation with their grandfather Max Tennyson, Ben and Gwen learned about the Omnitrix, a device created by a deceased supervillain named Prometheus which had forcibly fused to Ben’s wrist. So far, only the two cousins and their grandfather know about this, and Ben just passes the Omnitrix off as a cool watch he got during that vacation to the rest of his family. They soon enough returned to school in their hometown of Sunnyvale, California. Once again, Gwen would be an over-achieving bookworm and Ben would be dealing with school bullies and his feelings for his classmate Julie Yamamoto. One day, after class, a group of popular girls, jealous of Gwen’s academic ability, stole her school work and backpack out from under her and Gwen gave chase. The girls disappeared around the corner but an older girl appeared to a tired Gwen and gave her back her stolen items. Gwen, not questioning how she got her stuff back, made friends with the older girl, named Hope. Meanwhile, Ben was walking home when a nearby dumpster in an alley flashed with violet energy inside. He looked inside and saw those three girls inside. They were disoriented and had no idea how they ended up in the dumpster. As the week progressed, Gwen’s friendship with Hope was built up, but her parents Carl and Natalie noticed a decline in her attendance and grades. Thinking Hope might be the cause, Gwen’s parents demanded that she ended her relationship with her. When Gwen refused, she was grounded until she agreed to do so. That night, Hope came to Gwen’s bedroom window and the girls both ran away into the night, with Hope promising to show Gwen something special. Ben, whose family lived across the street from his cousin’s, noticed something unusual there while he was studying. It was Gwen, climbing out her bedroom window with Hope! With no other feeling than something bad might be going down, Ben snuck out of his house to follow them. At a safe distance, Ben followed the girls into a forest on his bike. In the forest, Hope led Gwen to an arcane circle drawn into the earth with indigo ink and salt. Gwen walked into the middle and chains erupted from the circle in a flash of purple light! The chains tied Gwen up, and Hope stood there as it happened. A man in dark cloaks, wearing arcane talismans and skull face-paint, stepped out from behind a tree, applauding his niece Hope, whom he called “Charmcaster”, for ‘another successful capture’. Gwen, frightened, was told by the man, “Hex”, they hunt down “Homo magi”, natural-born magic users, to drain their life force to retain their immortality and magic ability. Gwen screamed and Ben came to her rescue! Using the Omnitrix, Ben 10 transformed into a form he calls ‘Ghostfreak’, a spectre-like mutation. Hex and Charmcaster fought against Ghostfreak with their magics, Hex conducting his powers through his talismans and Charmcaster’s through an enchanted satchel, but Ghostfreak’s intangibility power allowed him to evade the attacks easily. He tore off some of Hex’s talismans and tossed them into the circle, enabling a counterreaction that dissolved the chains that bound Gwen. Gwen collapsed to the dirt as Ghostfreak changed back into Ben because his 10-minute limit was up. Hex was knocked out in the fight, but Charmcaster cornered Ben with two dog-like golems she conjured from her satchel. Gwen, thinking fast, seized one of the discarded talismans and concentrated. Indigo energy shot out from the talisman, knocking down Charmcaster and shattering the golems. Gwen continued to hold the talisman up to Charmcaster as she panicked and teleported away with Hex. Tired, Gwen fell to her knees and dropped the talisman. Just then, a blue-skinned teenager with golden horns and armor appeared before the cousins. The teen, Dan Cassidy, collected the talismans and handed Gwen a pamphlet for the Kent Nelson Institution, explaining the school is a safe haven for Homo magi like her, where she can learn how to use her newly-discovered magic safely. A few days later, Gwen explained to her parents that, not only is she no longer friends with Hope, she received a pamphlet for a prestigious school in Salem, Massachusetts, and she wants to attend. A month later, Ben hugged Gwen outside the Institution as she moved from Sunnyvale to Salem to attend it. Ben was happy that Gwen would be safe here, safe from the likes of Hex and Charmcaster…
Notes:
* Dan Cassidy (based on The Blue Devil) is a member of the magic hero team called The Shadowpact, who make their home at the Kent Nelson Institute.
