Description

Once upon a time in Washington, DC, a jailbreak had occurred at a federal prison operated by the DEO (Department of Extranormal Operations). A dangerous criminal known as Solomon Grundy had escaped from custody and is somewhere in the wilderness, last seen headed towards Pittsburgh, PA. As the authorities scrambled to find and capture him, even taking assistance from the vigilantes known as Batman and Robin, the news outlets, working on little information they have on the criminal himself, unleashed a cavalcade of stories to warn the general public. One of the newspapers with such a headline soon enough reached the Business Office of the Woodlands Apartment Building in New York City. You see, the Woodlands is the central building of Fabletown, a secret community of magic beings from another world. Their Homelands were ravaged by an unknown adversary centuries ago, and the Fables have been living among ‘mundane’ humans since the colonial times of America. Now, they recognize the name Solomon Grundy as a name of a lost Fable, and when news of this reached the ears of Mayor Cole of Fabletown (formerly ‘Old King Cole’), he knew action had to be taken before the mundanes discover Fabletown. Cole assigned his assistant Snow White and the sheriff of Fabletown, Bigby Wolf (formerly ‘the Big Bad Wolf’), to find Grundy, unaware that he is not who they think he is. Before traveling to Pennsylvania to begin their investigation, Bigby and Snow made a short stop at the Trip-Trap Bar to recruit The Woodsman, a Fable with whom Bigby has had a rivalry ever since the ‘Red Riding Hood’ incident back in the Homelands. ‘Woody’, as they call The Woodsman, was against helping Bigby at first, but decided to go since he ‘has nothing better to do’. With Snow behind the wheel of their car, the three Fables made their way to Pittsburgh. Meanwhile, Batman and Robin were patrolling the night-shrouded skies of Pittsburgh, looking for any disturbance that could lead to the capture of Solomon Grundy. With the three Fables, they found a nightclub in the city called “My Alibi”, and decided to check it out to see if any of the locals know Solomon Grundy. In the nightclub, none of the other patrons knew who they were talking about, and this ended in a fight when a drunk customer grabbed Snow by her rear end. Bigby punched his lights out, dragged him into the streets, and threatened to beat his skull in. Robin spotted this altercation and glided down to the street to break it up. Bigby, being physically stronger than he looks, grabbed Robin by the neck and tossed him into a dumpster in a nearby alley. Snow implored Bigby and Woody to follow her away from the My Alibi bar, seeing as they had been made by the mundanes. Robin deftly tossed a tracker onto Bigby as they got back to their car. Batman learned of Robin being tossed like a ragdoll and followed the tracker. Batman followed the tracker to a cheap hotel in the city as Bigby, Snow, and Woody argued about the incident at the bar. Batman dove in through the window and fought Bigby and Woody through the halls of the hotel, which eventually spilled out onto the streets and into an abandoned warehouse. In this fight, Bigby morphed into his large, half-man half-wolf form to better fight Batman and Robin, the latter of whom eventually showed up. Snow soon enough broke up the fight. Knowing that Batman and Robin are the good guys and can keep a secret, Snow explained the Fables and Fabletown to them. When Batman asked why the Fables are in Pittsburgh, Bigby explained, after morphing back to his human form, that they’re looking for a Fable named Solomon Grundy who ended up in the papers as the subject of a police manhunt. But before Batman and Robin could explain that Grundy is not who they think he is, Solomon Grundy himself burst through the crates of the abandoned warehouse, roaring that the commotion of the fight woke him up from his nap! As Snow got behind cover, Batman, Robin, Bigby, and Woody teamed up to defend themselves. The three Fables now understand that this is NOT the same Solomon Grundy as in their records. As the fight progressed, Bigby morphed fully into his original form, a titanic wolf, and used his gale-force breath to launch Grundy into several walls, knocking the zombie-like monster-man unconscious. As Batman and Robin called in the police and the DEO to apprehend Grundy, a VTOL jet arrived, launching several cryogenic bombs at our heroes. With them distracted by this, a set of wires descended from the jet and ensnared Grundy to fly away with him. In the end, Grundy escaped with that help, and the Fables returned to their home city assured that their secret is safe. However, who helped Grundy escape and why? Batman could clearly see a woman with silver hair piloting the VTOL… As all of this happened, a scrying portal linking Earth with the Homelands of the Fables showed another woman what was happening. Her name is Queen Tsaritsa and, along with her majordomo Geppetto, she plans on returning all of Fablekind to the Homelands to be their master once more…

Notes:

* The crossover is inspired by the Fables video game, “The Wolf Among Us”.

* Queen Tsaritsa is based on the DC villain known as “The Queen Of Fables”.
