I was in Ukraine 3 years ago. I remember that as I said something in Polish all Ukrainians understand me, but when they spoke in Ukrainian I didn't understand anything...
But you have right, some words are resembles to Polish.

If you were in Lviv or somewhere in Western Ukraine it's normal that people understand you because they know about three languages.Unfortunately in my part if Ukraine most of people speek only Russian...

I think it's not so hard to learn another slavonic language. But Polish people usually talk too fast and I can't understand everything^^

I think that if one of Slavic languages is your mother tongue, all other ones may sound for you like a strange version of it, at least at the beginning
