My custom action figure of Samus Aran from Nintendo's Metroid video game series .Hand made from scratch
Sculpted in Castilene
Molded in Smooth-On silicone rubber
Casted in Smooth-On resin
Hand painted with Tamiya Acrylics
25 Points-of-Articulation
1/6 scale (12")
Close to 300 hours to complete (1st figure-30 hours each additional figure)
Only 6 made (5 sold, 1 for me

For me its mostly the other way around. I always see great figures out there but the articulation sucks. I love articulation. But yes... there are some pretty badly sculpted figures out there.
I actually have only been doing this for about 2 years. I use plastiline cause I like the firmness. Sculpey and Sculpey Firm are still too soft for me. Plus I just can't seem to get the baking part down. It always cracks or something. I would love to be able to sculpt it, bake it, and sand it to a smooth finish. I'll have to try again later.
For ease and cost, I would use Sculpey or Epoxy Putties like Aves Fix-it Sculpt. You don't have to make molds, which is the most expensive part of the process. Epoxy Putties self cure in about 3 hours. You don't have to bake it but the downside is you have a time limit. You can always sculpt on top of already cured Epoxy but you need to rough up the surface so the new stuff will have something to grab onto. I've seen some really impressive stuff being made with Sculpey also... I just don't know the techniques on how to use it correctly.
As for sculpting in parts or solid, it depends on the figure. If it has articulation I will do them in parts according to the joints. If it is a statue I will usually do them solid. But for molding, I might cut off an arm or leg to make it easier to mold and cast.

No, I'm working on a Light Suit version right now. I might make a 8" Varia Suit in the future. I'm beginning to like the smaller scale figures now. 12" is really big. I want a Samus figure that can be played with easier.

I can't begin to understand how someone could make this from scratch. Not 1 time but 6 times! But you did it, so reality's logic has loopholes it seems.
She looks so real and not a bit of the sculpture looks unfinished or out of place. SO GOOD.

I was determined to make her the best I could. But knowing what I know now... I want to maker her again... even better
Everything I did on Samus was a first. Sculpting, molding, casting... everything was learned during the process. And I am still learning.
