Description I just wanted to show where my commission and sketchwork come from before I scan them and colour digitally. I hope it is inspirational for those who draw on paper. The power with traditional art is that they are always touchable.

Goodness this is amazing. x3 I really love your way of drawing<3 I absolutely love seeing the unfinished traditional versions of your artwork. :3 I think it's so nice to look at<3 You're so amazing in traditional. x3 I usually have to screw with proportions digitally, so I can't just color the traditional lines usually. v.v I have so much respect for you because of this. x3

Did you use refs for some of these? Or is it all off the top of your head.

some are used with references, like the gesture drawings, some are from my head, like the big cats, antelopes, wolf

I love looking at sketches before they are inked/colored. I have a question I didn't see in your FAQ. What kind of regular pencils do you sketch with/what eraser do you use? A friend of mine bought me some sketch pencils for Christmas but when I use them and erase (since I make a lot of mistakes) it always smudges/you can still see where I was drawing. I don't push particularly hard either.

Thanks for your time!

I use two mechanical pencils with both different hardness fills, one HB and a B fill. Hb is nice for adding very light sketches, B for detailing. I use a regular white eraser, but make sure that the areas are clean. I sometimes get black dirt on my eraser from erasing. If I erase with it again, it indeed smudges. To solve this, erase it on some other white piece of paper until the black dirt is gone from your eraser, then you should be able to erase without getting nasty smudges. If still, I suggest buying maybe a better brand/quality eraser. Staedtler is good

It always pleases me greatly to see people working with traditional media. It gives me a lot of hope and strength. I'm still not the best at combining the two together, but it does help to let me know that I can.

Traditional is amazing. The problem is too many digital artists worry about making "unerasable" mistakes or not being able to "undo" xD. But the power is to ignore that worry and relax while you draw. Terryl Whitlatch is one of my inspirational idols who taught me to use traditional line-art.

I do both use refference images and freestyle from memory drawings the gestures are made from using the gesture tool [link]

this is very helpful. Now I see that the sheets of your sketchbook are nearly transparent. That makes some things much easier. Now I need one too ^^
Btw, how does your portable scanner work? Is it good? because I think I need one as well, hehe

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RedbuzzarddArt In reply to UmbraLynx [2012-05-25 21:02:59 +0000 UTC]

I dont use the transparancy technique anymore though. x3 I am working on a walkthrough on how I do these.

Me and the portable scanner can be seperated anymore! I use it everyday so far and i love that thing. It works very well for a price of 50$

did you go to any art schools? i really love your art! whenever i draw animals i can never get the proportions or fur to look real enough.

RedbuzzarddArt In reply to bassetluver [2012-05-25 20:56:37 +0000 UTC]

there is this book called " atlas-of-animal-anatomy-for-artists" , they go in deep detail showing drawn images of animals under the skin. They show you every muscle and bone details in every limb on every animal type. There is one online where you can look up for free: [link] But its definately worth buying the book because the contrast of the images is much better and clearer. Its just 10.25 USD on Barnes and Noble: [link]

nope, i am self thought its a lot of practice and understanding the muscle and bones is an important part too. After drawing the bones and muscles myself I improved in proportions and anatomy better.

RedbuzzarddArt In reply to Maquenda [2012-05-25 09:38:46 +0000 UTC]

nope. gewoon een bladzijde overheen gedaan, zie je beetje zachte lijnen doorschijnen en dan overtrekken.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

RedbuzzarddArt In reply to AlphaDera [2012-05-25 09:37:06 +0000 UTC]

yes, its the rough sketch of that drawing. its not that transparant but if you press paper on top of it, you can see some " lines" going through. and thats how I did it. Transparant paper is great to work with too and gives good scan results. But I have quit that technique for a while now.
