OK, because some people asked me for a tutorial - here it is
All my claw gauntlets were made this way - just the "decoration" is different.

Well, never thought of a skill level ^_^Β You should have a little exercise with air-drying clay as it feels and behaves different from polymer clay.
And you need a bit patience, because cutting the leather bands to the right lenght and attaching them can be frustrating Β

would it work, do you think, to use bake-dry clay? Simply fit them and make all the details and then BAKE it to let it dry?

Do you mean something like super sculpey or fimo? Well it could be a problem to attach the leather tapes, because you have to put them in the oven too. (I don't know how heat-proof leather is )
You should either use a material for the tapes that is heat-proof or glue them on later, but I think this could look ugly and is not as stable as attaching them before baking / drying.
I have made some sculptures out of oven-baking clay and I really like the material, but air-drying clay is available in a light version and heavy version, I use the heavy (VERY stable but not very shapeable) version for the claws, so they won't break. I think the air-drying clays are far more stable than oven-baking ones. Well, that of course depends on the kind of details you want to use - little spikes, etc. will break off easily I think Β
