Description "Come Nuka. It's time for your next lesson." Scar called, summoning his young son from his mother's embrace.

Two months had passed since Nuka's presentation. Balondemu and Ngina had yet to become pregnant with the heir Scar so desperately wished for (not for a lack of trying, though). Zira was now carrying what Scar hoped was a female cub (or cubs), to act as Queen for Balondemu's future son. Nuka had been doing well with his lessons, and in spending time with the boy, Scar had come to realize what Balondemu had been trying to tell him all along: Nuka was a very intellegent young lion -far brighter than the other cubs his age- despite his hyper-active and goofy attitude. He reminded Scar of himself at that age in that way, and Scar found he was beginning to actually enjoy his time with his son with Zira, though he'd never admit it out loud.

Now, with the skies finally completely clear of clouds for the first time in months, Scar felt it was time to pass down some knowledge his own mother Uru had taught him as a cub.

"But Father, it's night time. Isn't it time to sleep now?" the reddish brown cub asked, letting out a sleepy yawn as he did so.

"You'll have plenty of time to sleep later." Scar growled. "Now come along. We won't have another night like this for a while."

Scar lead Nuka through the Pride Lands until he found the same hill where he and his mother's had the same talk many years ago. The grass was browner and more...well, dead...then it was since he was last here (which was with Mheetu a couple of years back), but it was still greener than the rest of the Pride Lands.

Scar sat down and motioned for Nuka to do the same. The young cub did as he was told, still looking very confused as to why he had been dragged out into the middle of the Pride Lands by his father in the middle of the night. However, Scar didn't give an answer right away. He took a couple of minutes to collect himself, allowing the memories of his own talk with his mother play through his mind as he thought of the right words to say.

"Father, why are we here?" his son finally asked. "Is there something special about this place or something?"

"Or something." Scar replied, not wanting to get too sentimental in front of his son. He put a paw around his son's shoulders as he said, "Nuka, let me tell you something my mother told me."

The cub perked up at this. Scar rarely spoke of his family, let alone his mother, so to hear about something his father's mother -his own grandmother- told his father long ago definitely peeked his interest.

"Nuka, look up at the stars." Nuka did as he was told, following his father's gaze upwards. "The Great Kings and Queens of the Past look down at us from those stars."

"Really?" Nuka whispered in awe.

Scar hesitated, unsure whether he believed so or not considering his and the Pride Land's current status, but when one star in particular began to wink at him, he smiled softly and replied, "Yes."

Nuka stared up at his father in shock. He'd never seen his father smile before. It was a strange, but not unwelcome sight.

"Wow..." Nuka murmured.

"So, Nuka, whenever you feel alone, just remember, that those Kings and Queens will always be there to guide you...and so will I."

Nuka looked back up at the stars for awhile, pondering over what his father had said. The Great Kings and Queens of the Past...But there was one thing that bothered the cub.

"So if Kings and Queens get to be a star, what about everyone else?"

"Hm?"

"Where's everyone else? What about the antelope, or the cheetah, or the ant, or even lions who never get to be kings or queens?"

Scar paused. He had asked his mother the same question long ago, and she never could come up with a good answer. Now here was his own son, asking the same question, and Scar still didn't have an answer. He thought about just admitting to not knowing, but he knew that that wasn't a good enough answer for the cub, and besides, he never liked to admit when he didn't know something. So he thought long and hard before he finally said, "Everyone else....They are the shadows behind the stars. They are there too, but you just can't see them like you can a star."

"Oh, I get it. So it's thanks to everyone else that the Great Kings and Queens get to shine so bright at night!" the cub said with a smile on his face.

"That's right. Without them, there would be no Great Kings or Queens. Behind every monarch is their kingdom and the people within it, for without them, then how could one be called a king or queen?" Scar said, proud of himself for coming up with such a brilliant answer on the fly.

"You're right! You're so smart, Father. You must know everything!"

"Ha ha ha! Not quite everything Nuka, not quite. But listen to me, and you'll learn everything I know and more, that I promise. And perhaps...just perhaps...someday you may be able to become as brilliant a King as me."

------------------------------------

NOTE: Scar and Nuka again, this time having the "Under the Stars" talk. Difference is that instead of Ahadi telling Scar about the Great Kings (and Queens) of the Past, it was Uru. Ahadi told Mufasa, while Uru told Scar, as Ahadi was A) too busy teaching Mufasa to tell Scar, and B) too scared/wrapped up in his own phobia of his own abusive father to teach Scar (who looks a lot like Ahadi's father). And it looks like Scar is beginning to warm up to Nuka! Who'd have thunk it? But unfortunately that won't last long, because soon you-know-who's gonna come in soon and kick the old tyrant off his throne!
